Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Elizabeth Jennings is a Soviet spy. What is her actual name?

Answer: Nadezhda

When Elizabeth was living in the Soviet Union, her name was Nadezhda. Throughout the show Elizabeth has flashbacks to her younger days and we learn that she comes from Smolensk, a city in western Russia near the Byelorussian SSR. Her family was devastated during World War II, called in Russia the 'Great Patriotic War', when her father died in the conflict.

She learned that he had been killed in the Battle of Stalingrad, but not as a fighter but rather as a deserter. This left Elizabeth and her mother to fend for themselves after the war which often left them without anything. Nadezhda's mother was ill when Nadezhda was just 14 and she had to care for her mother while attending school. Nadezhda was approached by the KGB to join Directorate S in the 'Illegals Program'.
2. Elizabeth and Philip capture a Soviet defector to the United States who has ties to Directorate S. What history does Elizabeth have with the defector, Nikolai Timoshev?

Answer: He raped Elizabeth when he was supposed to be training her

When Elizabeth was a teenager and was in training for the Illegals program in Directorate S, Nikolai Timoshev was a part of that training. However, he allowed himself to take liberties with the trainees and forcibly raped Elizabeth. Elizabeth has flashbacks to this event when she and Philip abducted Timoshev.

When they miss their handoff to have Timoshev repatriated back to the Soviet Union, they are forced to keep him in the trunk of their car. Philip sees that Elizabeth is troubled by something and she eventually tells him the story. Philip, in an act of love or compassion, then murders Timoshev and the two dispose of his body.
3. Elizabeth has an ongoing affair with one of her agents. Who is the gang leader that was actually Elizabeth's first real love?

Answer: Gregory

Elizabeth recruits Gregory Thomas when they were both civil activists in the late 1960s. He is loyal to her as much as he is loyal to the Soviet cause because it is clear that he is in love with her. Elizabeth also loves Gregory, at first, but grows to love Philip leading her to cut off the relationship she has with Gregory.

In the end, when Gregory is fingered by one of his own people, the KGB offer to smuggle him out of the States to Russia, but he refuses. Instead, he sacrifices himself by shooting at cops and dying when they return fire at him, fatally.
4. Elizabeth recruits a South African student to be an agent. Who is this idealist who she trains in spycraft?

Answer: Hans

Hans is a South African working at the university as a teaching assistant who is fed up with Apartheid and the American support of the regimes in South Africa who want the continuation of Apartheid. Elizabeth trains Hans in spycraft - how to notice people and vehicles, how to tail without being noticed, and more.

He is a quick study and does his best to learn and get better. Ultimately, however, it is a silly mistake that leads to his death; Hans gets cut on a casket that is being exhumed. In the casket is the very infected body of William, and Hans is exposed to the Lassa disease. Elizabeth is forced to kill him and she and Philip bury Hans' body along with William's.
5. Elizabeth takes Paige to Germany in order to meet someone special to her. Who do Elizabeth and Paige go to meet?

Answer: Elizabeth's mother

When Elizabeth receives word that her mother is dying, she is shaken. She shares this news with Philip. Philip goes to Gabriel, their handler, and demands that Elizabeth be allowed to see her mother one last time. At this time, Philip and Elizabeth reveal their true identities to their daughter, Paige. Paige's trust is shaken when she learns that her parents have been lying to her for her entire life.

In an attempt to regain that trust, Philip and Elizabeth arrange for Paige to accompany Elizabeth to West Germany to go meet Elizabeth's mother.

They plan to cross over into East Germany to do so, but, KGB agents manage to get Elizabeth's mother over to the west side so that Elizabeth would not risk blowing her cover. Elizabeth is able to meet with her mother one last time.
6. Elizabeth takes on the persona of Dee Eckhart, a flight attendant with an adopted Vietnamese son, Tuan. Who is she spying on?

Answer: A family that defected from the Soviet Union

Elizabeth and Philip are tasked to keep tabs on the Morozovs, a family of defectors from the Soviet Union. To do so, she takes on the persona of Dee Eckhart, a flight attendant who is often away. Philip is Brad, her husband and a pilot for the same airline. Together, they have an adopted son, Tuan, who is actually a Vietnamese agent and the only person who is permanently at that address. Tuan keeps tabs on the family and he befriends the son of the Morozovs, Pasha. Elizabeth gets friendly with the mother, Evgheniya, and soon learns from her that she is having an affair with a CIA agent who is about to be transferred to Moscow. Elizabeth helps influence Evgheniya in order to convince her to return to Moscow.

The intention is that the KGB use this affair to blackmail the CIA agent to divulge secrets about the station they have in Russia.
7. Elizabeth actually makes a friend in Young-hee Seong, a Korean saleswoman for Mary Kay. Why is she interested in Young-hee?

Answer: Young-hee's husband has access to diseases

Young-hee Seong is the closest that Elizabeth comes to having a real friend on the show. They become close when the KGB identifies Young-hee's husband, Don, as having access to pathogens that the KGB wants to steal. Elizabeth, as Patty Rawlings, sets herself up as an aspiring Mary Kay saleswoman and Young-hee takes her under her wing. Elizabeth and Young-hee grow close and develop a real relationship and Elizabeth gets to know Young-hee's family.

However, Elizabeth has to betray her friend and pretends to sleep with Don in order to gain access to the codes to the lab housing the level-5 pathogens, ones that their fellow agent, William, doesn't have access to.
8. In order to gain information from Glenn Haskard, Elizabeth has to get close to his wife. What profession does she have to fake in order to get close to Erica Haskard?

Answer: Nurse

Erica Haskard is dying of cancer and Glenn, her husband, contracts a company of in-home nurses to take care of her. These nurses happen to be Elizabeth and Marylin in disguise. Elizabeth becomes Stephanie, a nurse, and takes care of Erica, keeping her alive and providing companionship. Erica is an artist and "Stephanie" pretends to know nothing about it. Erica, frustrated with that attitude, resolves to teach Elizabeth something about art and how to see things in a different light. Elizabeth is able to get information from Glenn, who is on the negotiating team on the nuclear proliferation treaty on behalf of the US State Department.

In the end, Glenn decides to sympathetically euthanize Erica, but botches the attempt. Elizabeth, to put him in her debt, finishes the job by using one of Erica's paintbrushes and jamming it down her throat, choking her.
9. When Emmet and Leanne Connors are found murdered, Elizabeth has to become a social worker to help try and solve this mystery. Who does she gain access to in this disguise?

Answer: Their son, Jared

Jared Connors is the only survivor of the gruesome murder of the Connors family. When Philip discovers Emmet, Leanne, and their daughter Amelia dead in their hotel room, he runs out of the room and runs into Jared coming up from the pool. Emmet and Leanne are also Directorate S agents and Philip and Elizabeth must find out who killed them to ensure their own safety.

In order to do so, Elizabeth becomes Ann Chadwick, a social worker, in order to be able to talk to Jared without suspicion. In the end, the Jennings discover it was Jared, himself, who murdered his family.
10. Who does Elizabeth train as an agent, much to the displeasure of Philip?

Answer: Paige

The KGB intends on using the children of Directorate S officers as agents themselves. While the 'illegals' have the cover of some American who was deceased as a child and therefore it's flimsy and holes can be poked if one does a search into their background, the cover for the second-generation agents is rock-solid. When the first recruit, Jared Connors, turns out to be too unstable, the KGB targets Paige as the second recruit.

While Philip is vehemently opposed to involving Paige in any KGB dealings and wants her to be free to live her life, Elizabeth warms up to the idea and trains Paige in both self-defence and spycraft. By Season 6, Paige is heavily involved in supporting her mother's covert operations and, in the end, chooses to remain behind in the United States when her parents' cover is blown.
