Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Philip Jennings is a Soviet spy. What is his actual name?

Answer: Mikhail (Mischa)

When Philip was living in the Soviet Union, his name was Mikhail, but everyone called him Mischa. Throughout the show Philip has flashbacks to his younger days and we learn that he comes from Tobolsk, a city in south-central Russia. His family was poor and Mischa often had to fight for food, sometimes these fights got bloody.

His father died when he was only six and we don't learn much about what happened to his mother. Mischa joined the KGB when he was a teenager and was trained by them to be a part of Directorate S, the "illegals program".
2. How many biological children do we learn that Philip has?

Answer: Three

Aside from Paige and Henry, the two kids that Philip has with his KGB partner, and wife, Elizabeth, we learn that Philip fathered a child with Irina, a woman that he dated when he was just joining the KGB. Since Philip had been assigned to go into training for Directorate S, Irina hid this from Philip and only told him years later when his son, also called Mischa, was grown up. Mischa Jr. is told of his father's existence, makes a valiant attempt to cross the Iron Curtain to get to the United States to meet his father, but is ultimately denied because it would be dangerous for Philip.
3. Philip's best friend is Stan Beeman. What sport do they like to play together?

Answer: Racquetball

In the first episode of the show, Stan Beeman moves in across the street from the Jennings with his wife and teenager son. It is ironic that Stan and Philip become such good friends. Stan is an FBI agent, and he is in counterintelligence to boot - the very people that are trying to catch Philip and Elizabeth and to bring them to justice. On the other hand, it's a source of information for the Jennings to draw upon. However, the friendship between Philip and Stan seems very real and, when Stan confronts Philip in the final episode, Philip says that Stan has been his only friend.

Stan and Philip go to the same gym and play racquetball together. Even though Philip is not very familiar with the game, he picks it up pretty quickly and is able to beat Stan pretty handily.
4. Philip has a long-lasting relationship with Martha Hanson, even going as far as to marry her in a civil ceremony. What name does Martha know Philip by?

Answer: Clark

Philip uses many aliases throughout the show in order to protect his identity. One of his informants is a Martha Hanson, a secretary to the director of FBI counterintelligence. He is known to Martha as Clark Westerfeld, an officer in the Office of Professional Responsibility - in charge of oversight of the counterintelligence department.

When he sees that Martha has an interest in him beyond a professional one, he develops those feelings in Martha and eventually marries her in a civil ceremony. Ironically, at the wedding, his wife Elizabeth poses as Clark's sister.
5. Philip also has a real job, one that actually pays the bills. What is Philip's chosen profession, one that allows him to get away often?

Answer: Travel agent

Philip and Elizabeth start Dupont Circle Travel together, and they build it from the ground up. Philip devotes a lot off time and energy into being a travel agent. In fact, after he takes leave of being a KGB officer at the end of season 5, he becomes a full-time travel agent and expands his business.

Unfortunately, this expansion does not go as well as Philip would have hoped and this sends him into a financial rut. Nevertheless, this job allows both Philip and Elizabeth to spend much time away from the office under a believable cover.
6. One of the things that Philip finds meaningful is his life are the self-help sessions he goes to. What is the name of this program that is later called "The Forum"?

Answer: Erhard Seminars Training

Philip initially goes to a session of Erhard Seminars Training, or EST, with his friend Stan. They went because Stan wanted to get better insight on why his wife left him. However, while Stan finds the teachings at EST nonsense, Philip actually finds them interesting and transformative.

He continues in his study and actually delves deeper into the teachings of EST. Initially, Elizabeth is supportive, but Philips participation in EST seminars also becomes a point of contention between the two.
7. As Scott Birkeland, Philip runs an informant called Annelise who is the wife of the Deputy Undersecretary of the Department of Defense. He poses as an undercover agent from which country?

Answer: Sweden

Annelise is an informant for Philip who craves thrills. Philip gives her the adrenaline boost she wants by posing as a Swedish intelligence officer, Scott Birkeland, and convincing Annelise that she can eventually come back to Sweden with 'Scott'. He and Annelise also develop a sexual relationship, something he knows will enhance her thrill of doing something illicit.

While Annelise is good at manipulating men, Philip uses this to his advantage by getting Annelise to get close to Yousaf Rana, a Pakistani ISI agent.
8. Philip manages to blackmail Yousaf Rana into working for him. Where does Yousaf Rana come from that can help the KGB get information about the war in Afghanistan?

Answer: Pakistan

Yousaf Rana is the deputy Pakistani ISI officer in their Covert Action division. They come to the United States often to meet with their CIA counterparts and to train with them, and Yousaf is identified as a possible informant for the KGB. When he is seduced by Annelise, Yousaf reveals that his commander does not disclose anything to him, so the KGB has his commander killed bumping Yousaf up to the vacant position.

When Yousaf kills Annelise in a fit of rage, Philip and Elizabeth help Yousaf dispose of the body but take damning pictures to blackmail Yousaf. Philip uses Yousaf to get information about the war in Afghanistan and to try to help the Soviets get an advantage in that theater.
9. Philip takes on the persona of Brad Eckert in order to get close to a family of Soviet defectors. What is his alias Brad's profession, which is also his excuse for being absent for much of the time?

Answer: Airline pilot

Philip becomes Brad Eckert, who is an airline pilot. Brad, along with his lovely stewardess wife Dee (who is Elizabeth), have an adopted son called Tuan from Vietnam. The three of them, but Tuan mainly, are sent to observe the Morozovs, a family of defectors from the Soviet Union.

They get close to the Morozovs, and are able to manipulate the Morozov wife and child into returning to the Soviet Union.
10. One of the last personas that Philip adopts on the show is that of James Baxter. Under that guise he befriends Kimmy Breland in order to bug her father's briefcase. Who does Kimmy's father work for?

Answer: CIA

Kimmy Breland is the daughter of Isaac Breland. Initially she is targeted by the KGB because she babysits for Ted Paaswell, a CIA agent in the Afghan division. However, after watching Kimmy, Elizabeth and Philip learn that she is the daughter of Isaac Breland, the head of the Afghan division. Philip dons the disguise of James Baxter, a lobbyist, and provides Kimmy with weed in order to get close to her. Philip manages to bug Isaac Breland's briefcase and then returns to visit Kimmy regularly inn order to switch out the tapes.

Later on in the show, Isaac Breland is promoted to the head of the CIA's Soviet division making him an even more valuable asset to Philip.
