Sophia is Dorothy's mother. This made for an added dimension in the relationship between the two. They are not just house mates. Sophia is played by Estelle Getty, Dorothy is Beatrice Arthur, Rose is Betty White and Blanche is Rue McClanahan.

Blanche is a southern belle. She is very confident about her looks and often describes herself as a beautiful woman. She refuses to acknowledge that she is aging, and makes tactless hurtful comments about the appearances of the others.
