Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where do the Baudelaires find Uncle Monty's body?

Answer: In the Reptile Room

The Baudelaires wake up at dawn and know instantly that something is amiss. Monty had planned to awaken them. Violet and Klaus run downstairs to the Reptile Room and find him...well...his body at the seat at his desk. A bite mark radiating venomous veins is on his cheek; he is dead, and no less a specimen than his reptiles. Count Olaf greets the children and says that it's tragic, but for the best.

They will all head to the car and depart for the SS Prospero, bound for Peru. The children refuse, but when Olaf reveals that he has Sunny trapped in one of his suitcases, they have no real choice but to follow along.
2. In an attempt to prove that Stephano is Count Olaf, the Baudelaires try to reveal his tattoo. Where should it be located?

Answer: On his ankle

Count Olaf begins driving down the driveway and insists that once they're in Peru, he can finally take advantage of some lax guardianship laws and get the fortune he deserves, but before the vehicle can leave, someone else pulls into the driveway, forcing him off the lane and into a topiary of a giant snake (which falls through the windshield).

It was certainly fortunate for the Baudelaires that Mr. Poe was on his way to Dr. Montgomery's house to deliver their passports. This does, of course, mean that Olaf has to maintain his Stephano disguise, and it works-- Mr. Poe is none-the-wiser.

Despite the children's attempts to inform Mr. Poe that not only is Stephano Count Olaf, but that he murdered Uncle Monty, Mr. Poe does not believe that the two are the same, especially after Olaf reveals his left ankle to show that he does not have a tattoo of an eye on it. Satisfied, Mr. Poe says that they will all wait for the police together.
3. What is the name of the nurse who arrives at the Montgomery house for an autopsy?

Answer: Nurse Lucafont

Mr. Poe manages to get through to the police and nearly immediately, someone pulls up in a van marked 'CORNER'. Sure enough, a nurse named nurse Lucafont is at the door within a minute, though Mr. Poe and the children are a bit leery as to whether or not she's qualified as a professional, especially since she seems to think that reptiles are contagious and she's afraid of being with the dead body.

The Baudelaires manage to convince everyone that Stephano and the nurse should investigate the corpse and, in the meantime, speak to Mr. Poe about their situation.

He tries to put their minds at ease, establishing that under no circumstance would they be handed off to Stephano as a new legal guardian...at least not without thorough paperwork.
4. Count Olaf (as Stephano) claims that Dr. Montgomery was killed by the Incredibly Deadly Viper.

Answer: True

After following screaming in the Reptile Room, Mr. Poe and the children enter to find Stephano and Nurse Lucafont draping a blanket over Dr. Montgomery's corpse. The cause of death, they say, is simple-- it's the bite mark on his cheek and it could only have come from a deadly snake. Violet reasons that, as the leading herpetologist, he would know better, but Stephano asserts that he was bitten by the Incredibly Deadly Viper. Mr. Poe believes this, but the children claim it's a misnomer, as they learned a few days earlier. Unfortunately, the snake is no longer in its cage.
The children also manage to force Count Olaf's henchman to remove his mask, but Mr. Poe doesn't recognize him anyways, so it doesn't matter.
Soon, the time arrives for Mr. Poe to leave, and he plans on bringing the children with him as their de facto guardian until a new one is determined. They are stopped though; with a deadly snake on the loose, Stephano claims, they can't go. His nurse backs him up. The house is already under quarantine.
5. What food is used in an attempt to lure a snake out of hiding in the Reptile Room?

Answer: Peach

It takes a little bit of time, but the rest of Count Olaf's henchmen, hiding in the CORNER vehicle, barge into Uncle Monty's country house with everything they need to pretend that they're a real crime scene investigative squad. A perimeter is formed and Uncle monty's body is removed from the house while the children head upstairs to formulate a plan. They know that the Incredibly Deadly Viper is innocent and they need to find a way to prove Stephano as a fraud in front of Mr. Poe.
In the Reptile Room, the hook-handed man, improvising, tries to use a can of peaches to lure the Incredibly Deadly Viper out of hiding.
Count Olaf heads upstairs, knife in hand, but doesn't find the children. Klaus is actually hanging out the window. It's there that Klaus gets an idea.
6. Klaus discovers that the item pulled from the wreckage of the Baudelaire mansion is likely which of these?

Answer: Spyglass

Klaus, escaping out the bedroom window and crawling into the Reptile Room via a secret door, winds his way through the cages and finds Uncle Monty's journal sitting on his desk. He turns the pages and finds an entry dedicated to the incredibly Deadly Viper bookmarked with the message Monty took from the encoded subtitles of 'Zombies in the Snow', the movie they watched at the local theatre. Looking up to a photo on the wall, Klaus realizes that the device he pulled from the wreckage of the Baudelaire Mansion is a spyglass, not unlike Monty's own.

Unfortunately, he drops it on the floor, attracting everyone's attention. He's only saved when both a scream and a baby's cry are heard from the front entrance of the house.
7. Count Olaf claims that he really only needs to take one of the Baudelaires with him to Peru to obtain the fortune he seeks.

Answer: True

Six minutes before Klaus was nearly caught in the library, Count Olaf investigated the children's bedroom, missing Violet and Sunny as they escaped behind him, heading downstairs and out the front door. Violet, getting into an inventive mood, puts her hair up and begins unlocking Count Olaf's alligator-skin suitcase, using Sunny to bite a metal keychain into a useful lockpick.

Although Violet finds a number of items in the case, it's a syringe that concerns her the most. She doesn't notice Sunny leaving with the Incredibly Deadly Viper through the ornate topiaries nearby, partly because Count Olaf catches her rummaging through his case.

When he reveals he only needs to take her to Peru with him, she flees back to the front entrance of Monty's house to find what everyone else has already seen-- Sunny in the grip of the Incredibly Deadly Viper.

Despite this, both Klaus and Violet are able to be on hand with proof that the snake is far from deadly.
8. Which snake's poison does Mr. Poe find missing from the venom cabinet of the Reptile Room?

Answer: Mamba du Mal

Despite the Incredibly Deadly Viper being safe, Count Olaf claims that he knows enough about snakes to know that Monty was still killed by one. This, however, contradicts what he already said in the Reptile Room earlier. Additionally, Violet has the evidence that Count Olaf, posing as Stephano, killed Uncle Monty. First in the evidence pile is a vial, formerly of Mamba du Mal poison, which is missing from Monty's cabinet; Klaus says it's one of the deadliest snakes in the hemisphere. Violet also demonstrates that all of the items in Uncle Monty's suitcase fit together to form a double-barrelled syringe which he used to inject the venom into Uncle monty, simulating the double puncture marks of a snake. Klaus says the truth: Stephano is Count Olaf.

This gives Mr. Poe the impetus to check Stephano's left ankle again, this time wiping it with his handkerchief. Sure enough, the tattoo is there. The children were right all along.
9. How does Count Olaf escape capture as he flees the Reptile Room?

Answer: He heads into the hedge maze

Count Olaf has no choice but to admit he killed Monty, but he also admits to killing Gustav, his assistant, by drowning him in the reflecting pool outside. And when Mr. Poe realizes that the police and medical staff in the house are all Olaf's henchmen, there's a bit of a wrench thrown into the plan to apprehend him.

The children seem to be in his clutches yet again, but they're saved by unlikely heroes-- Monty's reptiles take it upon themselves to scare Olaf and his henchmen away. While Mr. Poe calls the police, the children pursue Olaf into the hedge maze outside, chasing him until he heads out through a trap door, escaping them. Klaus notices that the spyglass has been pulled from his pocket, likely by Count Olaf, before a wall of the hedge maze opens and the statue it its center steps off its pedestal to reveal it's actually Jacqueline.
10. Mr. Poe tells the children that their next guardian will be who of the following?

Answer: Aunt Josephine

Jacqueline tells the children that it's her goal to ensure Count Olaf is captured and that they're safe. While it's regrettable that Dr. Montgomery was killed, Peru was compromised and is no longer safe for the children anyways. She vows to get the piece of the spyglass back to Klaus and tells the children to find their Aunt Josephine, who will support them further.

After calling the police, Mr. Poe tells the children that he also called the Herpetological Society to redistribute Uncle Monty's reptiles to happy, new homes as they, too, are orphans. Both Mr. Poe and the children agree that their next guardian should be Aunt Josephine (she's next on the list anyways).

Jacqueline, meanwhile, chases Count Olaf through the underground passages beneath the hedge maze, finding the items shed from his Stephano disguise and locating him on the SS Prospero. He escapes her literal grasp, but she reclaims the spyglass piece.

In a Peruvian tavern, a mother and father try to reach Dr. Montgomery Montgomery on the phone but no one picks up on the other end. Their next step: chartering a plane.
