William visited James Delos in a sequestered apartment many years ago. Delos, dying of a disease he, ironically, defunded research for more than a decade earlier, eagerly and impatiently awaited has removal from his quarantine and William declared that he was there to perform a cursory interview as per the rules of his treatment. The purpose was to establish a baseline for fidelity, but when he handed Delos a note, sliding it across the table, things changed.

In the park, William and Lawrence crossed paths with a riderless horse, stumbling upon a camp occupied by rail workers forming the track with captured guests. As they passed through, they realized the railroad track was heading west instead of north, and it forced a bit of a detour.

Clementine dragged Bernard into the desert, eventually bringing him to a cave and departing before he awoke. She did, however, leave him a gun, and it was with this he traveled into the cave to find what he left behind. Inside, chained by her ankle, was Elsie, who he believed he choked and killed before Ford's new narrative began. Evidently, he knocked her out and placed her in the cave with food and water to sustain her.

This did, however, protect her from what followed. As Bernard started to seize and succumb to a cognitive lock, Elsie realized for the first time that he was a host and started to detask him, believing he would need to own up to some of the mistakes he'd made.

When he woke up, Elsie let him know that he wouldn't last long without more cortical fluid.

They made the decision to leave, but not before Bernard had a mysterious hallucination; Ford had a lab placed in the cave and Clementine brought him there for a reason. Feeling around for an entrance, eventually he opened an elevator and the two descended.

Arriving in the Sector 12 lab, Bernard and Elsie found carnage. When Elsie found a control unit printer inside, they both realized that something much bigger must have gone on inside; Bernard theorized that it was probably a site where guests were monitored. Before Bernard could figure out any more or decipher the visions in his head, he seized once again and Elsie had to deal with his cortical fluid to keep him stable.

Out in the park, Grace, ended up in the camp with the Ghost Nation warriors and, there, she found Ashley amongst the survivors. Ashley assured her that first responders would have protocol to get her and the others out, but she claimed that she wasn't looking to get out.

William and Lawrence arrived in Las Mudas to find the town mostly abandoned. In truth, most of the townspeople were being kept in the church by Craddock and the remainder of the Confederatos-- at least those that escaped Dolores' deceit. Craddock claimed that he was simply visiting town to claim their weapons, though Lawrence knew that he would kill everyone there as soon as he got what he wanted. That said, they needed a plan.

As soon as Lawrence told William that the guns were in an unmarked grave, William told Craddock their precise location and volunteered himself as part of the deal since he knew where they need to go to find the glory they sought out.

On another day in his sealed-off apartment, Delos started his day before William arrived with a bottle of booze. This time, William asked the same questions in his interview. In the sheet William handed over to Delos was the transcript of the entire conversation. Delos realized that he never recovered from his illness and was told he had been in the apartment for seven years.

When William departed, a technician outside the test chamber noted that they made it seven days in this trial and he ordered it terminated.

Inside the chamber, Delos' functions were frozen in place and the room was burned to clear the test.

In the night, the members of Ghost Nation brought the survivors across the fields. Grace, able to communicate with the natives due to her extensive time in the parks, discovered that they were traveling to meet with the first of their kind to be decided upon. After the survivors were brought forth, Grace undid her bindings and escaped into the brush. Ashley, however, was brought forward and a knife was placed to his throat. Their elder stepped forward and told him that he would only last as long as the last person who remembered him, and the natives disappeared into the darkness, leaving the humans behind.

In Las Mudas, the Confederatos found the weapons. Along with them was a bottle of nitroglycerin.

After his cortical fluid injection, Bernard awakened in the Sector 12 lab with his capabilities restored. Elsie, realizing that she would need his help, took the opportunity to start looking into the computers in the lab only to find that they were coded in a different language on a different operating system from the park. Bernard, however, saw the same encryptions in Peter Abernathy's code.

In an attempt to sort through his memories, Bernard realized that he'd been in the lab before, and at one point he commenced production of a new control unit using its systems.

The people in the lab weren't building hosts at all. As Bernard's memories bleed together, Elsie shoots the lock off a nearby door. Something is inside.

As the rain came down in Las Mudas, Craddock sat down with William to chat about their prospects. Pulling Lawrence's wife aside for a dance, Craddock mused upon death. He forced her to carry a shotglass of nitroglycerin out to Lawrence in the middle of the street. William told Craddock that he didn't know death, especially since he was sitting across from him the whole time, before attacking him with a broken bottle and engaging in a gunfight with his men. William won out against them and retrieved the shotglass from Lawrence's wife before forcing its contents down Craddock's throat and letting Lawrence shoot him, igniting the liquid.

On another day and with another build of Delos, many years after the initial tests, an aged William stepped into the testing chamber to have a drink with his former boss and mentor. Sooner than normal this time, Delos started to stutter and William explained that it was what engineers were calling a cognitive plateau. It seemed like Delos' mind was rejecting reality and itself. This was the hundred and forty-ninth time they brought Delos back-- it took thirty-five days before his degradation. William admitted that he was no longer sure it was worth it anymore; people were never meant to live forever. His wife was gone; Logan was gone. None of them could face reality. Some men, he realized, were better off dead. As William left the test chamber, he advised engineers that it could be useful to observe his degradation over the next few days. They would leave him be.

And that would be behind the door Elsie shot open in Sector 12. Seeing someone inside she manually overrode the door lock and she and Bernard entered to find Delos, now insane, inside. Bernard and Elsie fight him and incinerate him in his testing chamber.

Bernard informed Elsie that the man in the chamber was James Delos. His mind was copied onto a control unit like a host and they intended to keep him alive forever. Elsie told Bernard that she was heading to the mesa, but Bernard realized something-- was sent by Ford to Sector 12 to create a control device for another human. He did not know who for. She agreed to travel with him, but only if he wouldn't lie to her or hurt her again. He didn't lie to her about Sector 12, but he did omit the fact that he was responsible for triggering the hosts in the lab to kill the other technicians.

As William and Lawrence prepared to leave Las Mudas, Lawrence's family thanked him for his actions. Lawrence's daughter spoke to him there as Ford, explaining that his good deeds would not make up for his past. He would also still need to learn the true meaning of the game. As William and his few men headed out from Las Mudas and across the open desert, he came across a single woman on horseback-- Grace.

Silhouetted in the sun, she revealed herself, greeting her William as her father.
