Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the series premier, we learned that seven were chosen to protect the entrance to a demon prison world by a magical tree called the Ellcrys. What as the name of that demon prison?

Answer: The Forbidding

Based on novels of the same name, the series told of a future where humans, elves, gnomes, and trolls existed. A war had taken place, thirty years in the past, called the War of Races. After a mighty and magical battle, the elves reigned supreme, magic went away, and a druid went to sleep. At the start of the first episode, "Chosen: Part 1", seven young adults ran a gauntlet to be one of the chosen. It was always males who took part in this, but Princess Amberle went against convention and ran the race. She was the seventh elf to cross the finish line, but the only one of the seven to survive the first episode.

British actress Poppy Drayton played Amberle.
2. After Wil left home in the premier, he encountered a human girl named Eretria. After she saved his life, did she steal the blue Elf Stones he carried?

Answer: Yes

Wil's mother died, but before she did she gave him the three blue Elf Stones that were reportedly the undoing of his father. Eretria saved Wil from a troll, but then she drugged him and stole the stones. She used those stones as a bargaining chip with her owner/master, so he would not marry her off to a man. The druid Allanon awoke from a 30 year slumber when Amberle touched the Ellcrys and had her vision of a hellish future. He caught up with Wil, who was descended from Shannara blood. They traveled to Arborlon and discovered six of the seven chosen were dead. Amberle had fled to her aunt's and was still alive, so they went to retrieve her. Only with her help could they save the dying Ellcrys.

Ivana Baquero played Eretria. James Remar played her owner Cephalo. New Zealand native Manu Bennett played Allanon. The first season was filmed in New Zealand. Manu also starred in the CW series "Arrow" as Deathstroke.
3. In "Fury", episode three, who was the young Elvin man found chained up inside his own barn by Wil and Amberle?

Answer: Bandon

His parents were hanging upside down, dead, in their yard. Bandon had been chained up inside the barn by his parents, probably for his own protection. In this episode, Wil used the Elf Stones to save Amberle and Eretria from a demon attack on the Rover camp. It seemed as though his power was ignited by fear and the desire to protect those he cared about. Afterward, he, Amberle and Allanon began to head back to Arborlon. That was when they found Bandon. Amberle insisted he return to her home with them. Before she could enter the Ellcrys, she had to face a council to explain her actions. Both Allanon and Wil spoke on her behalf, and since she was the last of the chosen, they had no choice but to allow her to be judged by the Ellcrys. At the end of the episode, she entered the base of the tree to begin her trial. If she succeeded, she would get the seed to take to Safehold and immerse in the Bloodfire. Then, she could return to Arborlon and the Ellcrys could be reborn.

Ander and Arion are Amberle's uncles. Marcus Vanco played Bando, who had a vision when he touched Amberle. That vision prompted him to convince Wil to stay with Amberle on her journey.
4. Did the Ellcrys bear its seed to Amberle?

Answer: Yes

This happened to in episode four, "Changeling". After which, the Magda Mor (who was once a druid himself), ordered his shape shifting demon soldier, a Changeling, to kill the Princess before she left for the Bloodfire. The Ellcrys had tested Amberle and found her worthy to bring it back to life.

Also in this episode, Bandon admitted to Wil that he could see things when people touched him. He told Wil he'd seen Amberle's death. So, Wil showed him Amberle's drawing of the Bloodfire symbol. She'd seen it on stained glass while inside the Ellcrys. Bandon said that symbol was in his vision as well. He said it was inside the room where "they'd" died. Bandon said it wasn't Amberle and Allanon, but Amberle and another girl, a human- it was Eretria. Bandon later saved the life of Catania, when the demon shifted into Eretria's form. She'd seduced the Elf Stones out from under Wil, and then was spotted by Amberle when trying to leave the palace. She bumped into the demon in her haste, and it assumed her form. It was about to kill Catania, but Bandon had seen it already, and prevented it from coming to pass. Eventine presented a sword to Amberle, her father's sword, to take with her on the journey. Allanon killed the Changeling when it transformed into Wil and tried to kill Amberle.
5. In the "Reaper" episode, Amberle, Wil, and the others were captured by Eretria's owner Cephalo. Who saved Amberle from Cephalo?

Answer: Eretria

Eretria was bound and being basically dragged along with the party traveling to the fort. Amberle said that camping in the valley was safer because of line of sight, but her captain insisted they stay in the forest to avoid going out of their way. This led to Cephalo's band of Rovers capturing them. He granted her freedom as promised, but she came back to save Amberle from his unwanted sexual advances. She told Amberle Cephalo acted like a father, but he was actually her owner.

Allanon was trying to train Bandon on controlling his powers. He needed him to conquer the magic inside him, and use the Ellcrys to contact Amberle. The Dagda Mor, dissatisfied with his demon shapeshifter, considered murdering it. It assured him it could get back inside the palace at Arborlon and turn them all against the druid (Allanon). What it did was impersonate the king's son. Then, it murdered Eventine and and shifted into his appearance.
6. In "Breakline", Wil, Amberle, and Eretria were separated after their fall off of the Pykon Fortress. Wil came across an Elvin man named Perk who helped him regroup with the girls. What did Perk give to Wil in case Wil ever needed to contact him in the future?

Answer: Whistle

Perk was being pursued by humans who collected elf ears to sell. The ears were said to have magical/medical properties, sort of in the vein of black market items. He needed to get his friend back, who the humans were holding captive. Wil helped Perk retrieve his friend, who turned out to be a winged beast of some kind. Then, Perk helped Wil retrieve Eretria and Amberle from inside a buried high school. Unfortunately, Zora (the head human hunter) shot Eretria with an arrow and she was not able to get out with Amberle. When Perk left Wil, he gave Wil a whistle to use in case they ever needed Perk's help in the future.

Also in this episode, Ander and Arion went up against the Dagda Mor at the insistence of demon Eventine and Arion was killed. Allanon was restored to health by his dead mentor in a seaside cave and rode in to try and help the princes against the Dagda Mor. Jed Brophy played the Dagda Mor, Stuart Shacklock played Perk, and Zoe Robins played Zora.

The Dagger of Time is seen in the "Prince of Persia" franchise, the One Ring is from the "Lord of the Rings" franchise, and a broken mirror was how Aberforth Dumbledore communicated with the kids in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows".
7. "Utopia"- Eretria was traded to a human settlement. Her purpose was to be sacrificed to keep a local peace agreement intact. What kind of creature were the humans sacrificing people to, in order to prevent themselves from being killed?

Answer: Trolls

As of this episode, no gremlins, hellhounds, or goblins had been mentioned on the show. The four races were human, elf, troll, and gnome. Zora traded Eretria to a human named Tye. He told her he'd taken her to save her from an awful fate, and that she was free to go at any time.

He began enjoying her company a little more than he expected, so he decided he did not want to sacrifice her after all. Unfortunately, they were kind of out of time, because the trolls kept them on a schedule. They fed people to the trolls, and the trolls left them alone. Wil and Amberle came to save Eretria from the humans, but she said she was okay there.

She did not realize what they were doing. Wil, Amberle, and Cephalo ended up being tied to wooden posts to give to the trolls. Cephalo sacrificed himself, since he'd been fatally wounded by Tye anyway, and the other three did get away to resume their journey to save the Ellcrys. From a map found in a prior episode, it appeared as though they had to get to what was once San Francisco.

At the end of this episode, they happened upon the remains of the Golden Gate Bridge.
8. "Safehold"- Who used their blood to open the Bloodfire, into which Amberle disappeared with the seed of the Ellcrys?

Answer: Eretria

The traveled underneath San Fransisco to the location of the Bloodfire. When they arrived at its location, they met the not so pleasant Guardians of the Bloodfire. Eretria finally figured out what "your body is the vessel, your blood is the key" meant. She slammed her hand down onto a sharp object and bled down into and over it. This opened the Bloodfire and Amberle was able to get inside. When Eretria collapsed, the Bloodfire disappeared, Amberle with it. Eretria's fate was unknown at the end of the episode.

Also in this episode, Bandon was fighting off the influence of the Dagda Mor, who seemed to be gaining control over him. When he and Catania became intimate, he almost killed her. King Ander sent Commander Diana off to try and get the gnomes to help in the upcoming fight, and she was able to convince them to help.
9. As seen in the opening credits of each episode, who wrote the novels on which "The Shannara Chronicles" is based?

Answer: Terry Brooks

"The Sword of Shannara" was first published in 1977, Terry Brooks having said he'd been inspired by "The Lord of the Rings". "The Elfstones of Shannara" came out in 1982, and "The Wishsong of Shannara" in 1985. The TV series differed greatly from the novels, though the basic themes remained the same. The first book's story starts off with a young male protagonist, unlike the TV show, which has a young female.

Kass Morgan wrote "The 100" trilogy, whose TV counterpart first aired on the CW. Blake Crouch wrote the "The Wayward Pines Trilogy", which aired its first TV season on Fox in 2015. George R.R. Martin wrote the books on which the HBO drama "Game of Thrones" is based.
10. Which former "Switched At Birth" co-star played Wil Ohmsford on "The Shannara Chronicles"?

Answer: Austin Butler

Austin played Wilke on "Switched At Birth" and Sebastian Kydd on "The Carrie Diaries". And, like his co-star on "Shannara" had a small stint on "Arrow" as well.

The haunting theme song for the series is "Until We Go Down" by the band Ruelle.
"And I feel it running through my veins.. And I need that fire just to know that I'm awake.."
11. "Ellcrys"- Wil brought Eretria back to life/healed her with the Elf Stones.

Answer: True

After she had used her blood to open the portal to the Bloodfire, she collapsed and seemed to be gone for good. Wil held her and the Elf Stones, and said "Amberle" several times, concentrating very hard. Eretria woke up gasping. So, she may have already been dead, or very close to death, when Wil saved her.

She told him, "I guess you're a hero after all". When Wil told her Amberle had not returned from within the Bloodfire, Eretria said they had to reopen the portal. So, she used her blood again, and Amberle chose to return to them.
12. "Ellcrys"- Who stayed behind in the tunnels so that Wil and Amberle could escape and return to the Ellcrys?

Answer: Eretria

She stayed behind to shut a gate, blocking advancing enemies from Wil and Amberle. Amberle and Wil protested her sacrifice, but she reminded them that they all had a part to play. And, that it was Amberle who had to make it back to the Ellcrys.
13. "Ellcrys"- Who helped Bandon escape his prison at Arborlon?

Answer: Catania

He told her he needed to get far away so he wouldn't hurt anyone. It was clear he was battling the Dagda Mor's influence. They used a ruse to get the keys to his chains. After he was unlocked, Catania made the mistake of letting the guard know she was involved in the escape. So, he shoved her out of the way, causing Bandon to attack him viciously. Afterward, Bandon calmly looked at her and said "he shouldn't have touched you".

At the end of the episode, it seemed as though Bandon, wielding the Warlock Sword, was the newest evil on the horizon.
14. "Ellcrys"- King Ander killed his demon brother Arion during the epic battle with the demon horde. But, who had demon Arion killed first?

Answer: Commander Diana Tilton

Arion was believed to be dead after the encounter with the Dagda Mor in a prior episode. But, he (in some form) was among the demons fighting near the palace. He'd changed, and appeared very demon like himself. Just as Diana recognized his face, he slid the Warlock Sword into her. Ander went after him and stabbed him, and the demon eyes vanished and he seemed to be Arion once more.

He begged Ander to "release" him, and Ander did so, plunging his own sword deep into his brother's heart. So much for Ander and Diana's rekindled love affair.

She died a hero, in the battle to save the world.
15. "Ellcrys"- Was Amberle able to restore the Ellcrys and the demon prison world?

Answer: Yes

While inside the Bloodfire, she met with someone she said she'd been hearing inside her head all of her life. The entity appeared to be Amberle herself, and told her she had been chosen long ago and that she was the seed of the Ellcrys. So, when the time came, Allanon was able to open the Ellcrys as Wil staved off the Dagda Mor. Amberle entered the tree and the Forbidding was restored. Allanon leaped to his feet and cut the head off of the Dagda Mor before it could be taken back inside the prison. The rest of the demons vanished and the leaves reappeared on the tree simultaneously.

When King Ander explained about facing his brother Arion on the battlefield, Allanon said that the Dagda Mor's cruelty knew no end. This insinuated that despite Ander believing he'd seen a spark of Arion at the end, it was probably never his brother at all. And, as I'd mentioned before, it was Bandon holding the Warlock Sword at the end, his eyes the deep pools of a black abyss.

Wil went after Eretria, who was still alive in the tunnels beneath what was once San Francisco. At the very end, one of the creatures inside removed its mask and she recognized its face. Maybe it was her real father? The season ended with "To Be Continued".
