Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Did Aunt Josephine pen the suicide note found in her library?

Answer: Yes

Violet, Klaus, and Sunny review Josephine's letter while looking over Lake Lachrymose through the broken, wide window of her library. The suicide note, as read, informs them that they are to be entrusted into the hands of Captain Sham, a man they know to be Count Olaf.

Lemony Snicket informs the viewer that the Baudelaires have yet to know that they will see their Aunt Josephine again as she is not dead. The children call Mr. Poe and find that there isn't too much that they can do. Klaus, however, notices one thing they can pursue-- the note. He realizes that there are several grammatical errors in the message, contrary to Aunt Josephine's grammatical joys in life. That's when they start thinking that perhaps it isn't a note from her at all.

The next day, when Mr. Poe shows up, the children tell Mr. Poe everything-- a forgery, a murder-- and when they compare handwriting samples, they find that Josephine did, indeed, write the note.
2. Captain Sham informs Mr. Poe that he and Josephine met at which of these?

Answer: A baking class

Despite the children's warnings that Captain Sham is Count Olaf, he refuses to believe them. In fact, he suggests that they all go to 'brunch'-- a word he tells them is 'a combination between breakfast and lunch', even though they're well aware of what 'brunch' is-- on Captain Sham's urging to talk everything over. By coincidence, allegedly, Sham had already contacted Mr. Poe at Mulctuary Money Management.

With Hurricane Herman approaching, Mr. Poe drives the children down to the Anxious Clown Restaurant. They don't know that their server, Larry, is actively trying to help them, and things are made even more difficult to realize when Count Olaf starts spouting lies about how Aunt Josephine was his oldest friend. He claims that they met each other as oven partners in a baking class. It's a story positively lacking in truth.
3. What dish are the children served at the Anxious Clown restaurant?

Answer: Cheeseburger

Larry, the waiter of the Anxious Clown, is shocked to hear that Josephine is dead, and formulating a plan, tells the table that, considering it's a sad occasion, they order the cheer-up cheeseburgers and make sure to look inside to see what'll cheer them up under the bun. Count Olaf pays no real attention to this obvious prod, but the children do. They don't know that Larry is being bothered in the kitchen-- all of count Olaf's henchmen are in the kitchen.

The children persist, much to Mr. Poe's ire, that Captain Sham and Count Olaf are the same person, but Mr. Poe breaks down the hallmark clues and settles things once and for all as the children are given their cheer-up cheeseburgers and asked explicitly if they have any allergies that would force them to leave the restaurant. They tell the waiter-- peppermint.
4. The Baudelaires are only able to escape brunch with Captain Sham and Mr. Poe by faking an allergic reaction.

Answer: False

As Mr. Poe takes the guardianship papers out of his bag, Larry the waiter brings the table their bill, handing it and the complimentary restaurant peppermints to the children. They take them knowingly. Their allergies act quickly, and within moments the children exhibit signs of hives and swollen tongues. Mr. Poe, fearing for their health, decides to send them back to Aunt Josephine's house. Captain Sham insists that they finish the paperwork, and Mr. Poe wants to get back to the Fickle Ferry before the hurricane strikes, so the children head back in a taxi alone, saying that Captain Sham can pick them up after. Their real reason for leaving is to decode Aunt Josephine's note while they still can. Klaus starts to decode while Violet runs baking soda baths for their hives.

At the restaurant, Captain Sham and Mr. Poe go over the finer details of the adoption papers. In the kitchen, Larry receives a call. A mother and father begin flying their plane into a hurricane, now aware that the restaurant is compromised.
5. The suicide note proves to be an encoded message. What do the children determine that message says?

Answer: Curdled Cave

Klaus circles all of the errors in Aunt Joesphine's letter and he and Violet correct her mistakes to reveal the place name 'Curdled Cave'. With this information, and Aunt Josephine's map, they realize that they can take the Fickle Ferry to the Lavender Lighthouse and walk to Curdled Cave if they brave the storm. When they make this decision though, the library is torn from the rest of the house by the strong winds of Hurricane Herman. In the fight to escape, Klaus notices Josephine's safe fly open and sees Uncle Monty's spyglass on one of the pages. Another picture from inside the safe also shows several people in front of a lumber mill. He grabs the photo before they run from the building to the safety of terra firma. The moment they leave, the house plummets off the cliff...and it starts to rain.

Ironically, at the same time, Count Olaf and Mr. Poe discuss transferring ownership of Josephine's house.
6. What colour is the glow of Lavender Lighthouse?

Answer: Purple

Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, reaching the Fickle Ferry at Damocles Dock, realize that the ferry only runs to Lavender Lighthouse weather permitting, and with Hurricane Herman in full force, they won't be able to head across Lake Lachrymose to find Aunt Josephine.

Their only option is to steal a boat and sail across on their own. Lemony Snicket states that this causes a 'plethora' of challenges-- a word which, here, means 'too many to list'. Nonetheless, they make it across to the purple glow of the Lavender Lighthouse and the entrance to the Curdled Cave intact just as the storm breaks, and as they walk into the sound of wailing, they find Josephine inside. What they don't expect is that she intends to live there, in the cave, because it's safest.
7. Klaus is able to get Aunt Josephine to head back to town by tapping into her fear of which of these?

Answer: Real estate agents

What Josephine tells the children is that Captain Sham revealed himself to be Count Olaf when they went out for fried egg sandwiches and she was forced to write her suicide letter, handing them off to him as a guardian. When they returned to the house though, she stole away to the library and faked her own death, instead taking the opportunity to climb down the cliffside to her personal watercraft and ride off to Curdled Cave before the storm.

The children are all shocked that Josephine would leave them alone with Count Olaf and she outright refuses to leave out of fright. It's Klaus who convinces her to leave, digging into her great fear of real estate agents and convincing her to get into the sailboat with them to head back to town.
8. What did Aunt Josephine eat before heading out onto the water?

Answer: Banana

The Baudelaires and Aunt Josephine head back out onto Lake Lachrymose and in an effort to calm Josephine's fears Klaus shows her the photo of herself and the Baudelaire parents. She reminisces about their time at the Lucky Smells Lumbermill and about how brave their parents were. Not long after the photograph was taken, something happened that forced everyone in the photograph away from one another...

But Aunt Josephine stops herself short as they enter the territory occupied by the Lake Lachrymose Leeches who are attracted to the smells of human food. While the Baudelaires haven't eaten in almost a day, Aunt Josephine ate a banana before they arrived, and she's at risk. Sure enough, the leeches are in the water, waiting and eager. When they start eating into the boat...things get most frightening.
9. The Baudelaires and Josephines are saved from the Lachrymose Leeches and picked up by which of these?

Answer: A ferry

Violet realizes, once the boat starts taking water, that they'll need to create a signal that will get them seen by another boat. To do this, she takes Josephine's scarf and tries to create a fire. Klaus helps, attempting to refract light and make a small flame, but the only light nearby is the light of the Lavender Lighthouse. Fortunately for the children, a mother and father, passing by in their airplane, use their binoculars, creating enough light to create the signal they need.

While the plane goes down elsewhere, a ferry arrives and snags them before things can get much worse. Unfortunately for all of them, as their boat sinks behind them, they realize that the boat is being piloted by Count Olaf and his henchmen. Mr. Poe, as it seems, is putting the finishing touches on the contracts back in town, and there's no way Josephine can tell him the truth. In a more fortunate turn, however, Josephine picks that moment to start regaining her fierce and formidable old self.
10. The Baudelaires escape Count Olaf in the back of a truck bound for which location?

Answer: Lucky Smells Lumbermill

Josephine vows to stop Count Olaf and tell the truth but he has another idea in mind. As he lights his pipe, he nudges her off the deck of the ferry and feeds her to the Lachrymose Leeches. While she was not a good guardian, the orphans nonetheless mourn her loss.

The Baudelaires are taken back to Damocles Dock where Mr. Poe waits with his papers. The children fight to prove that Captain Sham is Count Olaf and it doesn't really work until Sunny chews through Captain Sham's fake peg leg, revealing that he always had his second leg (hiding his tattoo). While Olaf and Mr. Poe argue, the children notice a truck for Lucky Smells Lumber Mill nearby and sneak away escaping in the bed of the vehicle. While Mr. Poe has his back turned from Count Olaf, he and the henchmen also escape.

The Baudelaires wonder if they made the right choice, but it doesn't matter. What matters is what happens next.

It's no less unfortunate.
