Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dr. Noonien Soong was the premiere cyberneticist of the 24th Century. Which android did he create first, Data or Lore?

Answer: Lore

While Lore has the capability to express emotions and to incorporate informal speech patterns (such as the use of contractions), he was constructed before Data, not after. When the colonists on Omicron Theta became intimidated (even frightened) by Lore, Soong created Data, who had an incorporated ethical subsystem, no emotions, and use of formal speech patterns ("TNG" episode "Datalore").
2. What is the maiden name of Spock's mother, Amanda?

Answer: Grayson

Amanda's last name was only mentioned in the "TAS" episode "Yesteryear"; it was not mentioned in any other episodes or movies. "Star Trek" story writer Dorothy "D.C." Fontana developed the character for the "TOS" episode "Journey to Babel". Jane Wyatt later reprised her character in "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" (From "The Star Trek Encyclopedia").
3. In the mid-1970s, Paramount green-lit a new series called "Star Trek: Phase II". This proposed series eventually led to "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", in 1979. All the "TOS" cast members had agreed to the project, save Leonard Nimoy. As a result, the Science Officer was changed to a full-blooded Vulcan. What was his name?

Answer: Xon

David Gautreaux was cast to play the young Science Officer, Xon, for the "Phase II" project. Xon was described as a recent Academy graduate who was eager (for a Vulcan, anyway) to serve on the Enterprise. When "Phase II" evolved into the movie, Xon was replaced by Sonak (Jon Rashad Kamal), who died in a Transporter accident early in the film. David Gautreaux stayed on as Commander Branch, the male officer seen at the Epsilon IX monitoring station (Information from "Star Trek: The Lost Series").
4. Gene Roddenberry has been cast in at least one episode of "Star Trek" in his lifetime.

Answer: True

In the "TOS" episode "Charlie X", the crew of the Enterprise was preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving, and Captain Kirk had given instructions to the galley cook to do his best with the meat loafs that they were going to eat. But Charlie Evans (Robert Walker, Jr.) had used his telekenetic powers to turn the meat loafs into roast turkeys.

A call to the Bridge from the galley with the flabbergasted announcement of this transformation featured the voice of Gene Roddenberry as the cook.
5. What is Captain Kirk's brother's first name?

Answer: George

His name is George Samuel Kirk (His brother calls him "Sam"). He and his wife, Aurelan, were killed by the parasitic creatures that attacked the Deneva colony ("TOS" episodes "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" and "Operation -- Annihilate!").
FAST FACT -- Kirk's brother, Sam, has only been seen once, after his death. In "Operation -- Annihilate!" William Shatner donned a mustache and lay on the floor to "play" the part of Sam.
6. What does the "M" in "M-Class Planet" stand for?

Answer: Minshara

"Minshara" is a Vulcan word that is used to represent a planet that is suitable for humanoid life. The term "M-Class planet" has been in use since the original "Star Trek" pilot "The Cage", but what the "M" stood for was not introduced to the "Star Trek" canon until the "Enterprise" episode "Strange New World".
7. The title of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" came from an off-hand comment made by Gene Roddenberry during a "Star Trek" convention.

Answer: False

According to the book "Gene Roddenberry: The Man and the Myth Behind 'Star Trek'" by Joel Engel, The Great Bird was speaking at a convention in August 1986, and he was asked by an antendee if the show would ever return. After saying that doing television was "miserably hard work," he was not about to subject the "TOS" cast to that workload again. Be he did express an interest in a sequel series "dealing with the new issues of the nineties." In reply, the fan said "Sort of like, 'Star Trek' the next generation." Two months later, Paramount announced a new series (with a new cast) set to debut in 1987, with the title "Star Trek: The Next Generation".
8. In "Star Trek: Insurrection", Captain Picard and Lt. Commander Worf pursue a malfuntioning Data in shuttlecraft. Picard then gets the idea to distract Data with a song from a Gilbert & Sullivan musical. From what musical was the song?

Answer: HMS Pinafore

During the pursuit, Picard suddenly recalled that Data had been rehearsing for "HMS Pinafore". So, he called up the lyrics to "A British Tar" on the shuttle's computer and had Worf join in. After a moment, Data began to sing along and the scheme appeared to work (at least, for a while).
9. On "Enterprise", how did Commander Tucker get his nickname "Trip?"

Answer: He is the third Tucker named Charles

The "Trip" is short for "triple" (or, more accurately, "triplicate"). He, his father, and his grandfather are all named Charles Tucker.
10. In the movie "Star Trek: Generations", what was the vintage of the bottle of Dom Perignon that christened the Enterprise-B?

Answer: 2265

The year 2265 has no simultaneous relevance to Captain Kirk nor to the first Enterprise (NCC-1701), as Kirk took command of the ship the next year. It is, however, a tip to the year 1965, the year "The Cage" was completed and the second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before", was filmed.
11. On "Deep Space Nine", Chief O'Brien and his wife, Keiko, welcomed the arrival of their second child, a son. What was his name?

Answer: Kirayoshi

Their daughter, Molly, was born on the Enterprise-D ("TNG" episode "Disaster"). After Chief O'Brien transferred to DS9, he and Keiko had Kirayoshi. Nicknamed "Yoshi," he is partially named for Kira Nerys, who served as a surrogate mother after Keiko became injured during an accident on a runabout ("DS9" episodes "Body Parts" and "The Begotten").
12. In the "TNG" pilot episode "Encounter at Farpoint", an aged Admiral Leonard McCoy toured the Galaxy-class Enterprise-D, with Data as his guide. How old was McCoy at this time?

Answer: 137 years

McCoy was aboard to inspect the medical facilities of the Enterprise-D. With the exceptions of Uhura and Nurse Chapel, all principal "TOS" characters would appear in spin-off "Star Trek" presentations:
McCoy - "TNG" episode "Encounter at Farpoint"
Scotty - "TNG" epsiode "Relics" and the movie "Generations"
Spock - "TNG" episode "Unification"
Chekov - "Generations"
Kirk - "Generations"
Sulu - "VGR" episode "Flashback"
NOTE -- This list does not include the "DS9" episode "Trials and Tribble-ations", as the "TOS" cast were unbilled.
13. During the seven seasons of "Star Trek: The Next Generation", how many times did the Enterprise-D perform a saucer separation?

Answer: three

In the pilot "Encounter At Farpoint", Picard performed a saucer separation so that the families would be safe while he (in the stardive section) confronted Q. In "The Arsenal of Freedom", the automated weapons from the planet Minos forced La Forge (who was in temporary command) to do the same thing while the Away Team attempted to locate Picard and Dr. Crusher, who were injured on the planet's surface. And in "The Best of Both Worlds", the Enterprise-D separated in order to create a diversion against the Borg while Data and Worf took a shuttle to the Borg ship to mount a rescue of Locutus/Picard. Saucer separation created a "gee-whiz" factor for "TNG", even though it was an incredibly expensive effect (from a production standpoint).

As a result, saucer separation was done only three times during the show's run (and once more in the movie "Generations").
14. On which ship was Commander Sisko (and his family) during the Battle of Wolf 359?

Answer: U.S.S. Saratoga

According to startrek.com, Sisko had served on both the Livingston and the Okinawa prior to his assignment as first officer on the Saratoga. His wife, Jennifer, was a scientist on the Saratoga when the Borg destroyed it, and nearly 40 other ships, on their way to Earth. Though Commander Sisko managed to save Jake, Jennifer was killed by the time the order to abandon ship was given ("TNG" episode "The Best of Both Worlds" and "DS9" episode "Emissary").
15. Who is the first cast member in the history of "Star Trek" to direct an episode (not a movie)?

Answer: Jonathan Frakes

Jonathan Frakes holds the honor of being the first "Star Trek" actor to helm an episode, "The Offspring" ("TNG"), in 1990. Of course, the first cast member to direct a movie was Leonard Nimoy, with "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock", in 1984. Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Robert Duncan MacNeill and Roxann Dawson are among the most frequent "Star Trek" cast members to sit in the Director's Chair.
16. In 1968, rumors began to fly that "Star Trek" was facing cancellation by NBC (the network which had aired the show) at the end of its second season. What ensued was the now-legendary letter-writing campaign which resulted in the green-light for Season 3. Was Gene Roddenberry involved in this campaign?

Answer: Yes

Although his role as the show's creator and executive producer was supposed to recuse him from taking part in the campaign, he was approached by John and Bjo Trimble to compile a list of sci-fi convention attendees. He also supplied the Trimbles with the now-infamous "Star Trek Lives" and "I Grok Spock" bumper stickers that were plastered all over the cars in the parking facility at NBC headquarters, in New York City.

But when NBC asked if he had anything to do with the stunts, he put on his best poker face and feigned ignorance.

In the end, NBC published an open letter to "Star Trek" fans, saying that the show would return for a third season (From "Get a Life!", by William Shatner).
17. How many episodes of "Star Trek: The Animated Adventures" were produced?

Answer: 22

Only 22 episodes were produced for NBC's Saturday morning line-up, for the 1973-74 season. Largely ignored for years, even as "Star Trek" canon, all of the episodes are now available for purchase on home video.
18. When Gene Roddenberry was conceiving "Star Trek" in 1964, the ship was named the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Answer: False

Actually, the original MGM treatment for "Star Trek" with Captain April commanding listed the name of the ship as the S.S. Yorktown. After some retooling, the ship bore the now-famous moniker U.S.S. Enterprise (From "The Making of 'Star Trek,'" by Stephen Whitfield and Gene Roddenberry).
19. What was the name of Tasha Yar's sister?

Answer: Ishara

Ishara Yar (Beth Toussaint) was born on Turkana IV, along wither her sister. When Tasha left to join Starfleet, Ishara thought she was a coward to do so. After meeting with the crew of the Enterprise-D, Ishara later changed her mind about her sister.

She was also instrumental in the rescue of Federation personnel who had crashed on Turkana IV, even though she also had betrayed the trust of the Enterprise crew ("TNG" episode "Legacy").
20. The Suliban, who were introduced in "Enterprise", were named after the former Taliban regime of Afghanistan.

Answer: True

In the May 5, 2002, issue of "TV Guide", "Star Trek" honchos Rick Berman and Brannon Braga revealed that the Suliban were named for the Taliban. Even though they did not know anything about the Taliban to draw any direct parallels, they had chosen the name in 1999 because they did know that the Taliban were "a vague, shadowy, scary group." Berman, who had travelled to Afghanistan several years before, added that the name "Taliban" was "incredibly dramatic" and that it was "like something out of a Sinbad story."
