quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier", the renegade Vulcan Sybok was seeking Sha Ka Ree (or, as we humans call it, Eden). To which of the following languages does Sha Ka Ree translate as "Qui'tu?"

Answer: Klingon

"Qui'tu" is the Klingon translation for Sha Ka Ree. Sybok also said that "Vorta Vor" was the Romulan term, and that in Andorian, it's "unpronounceable."
2. In the second pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before", who played Dr. Elizabeth Dehner?

Answer: Sally Kellerman

Dr. Dehner was a psychologist who specialized in the effects of long-distance space voyages on people. She and Gary Mitchell (Gary Lockwood) were struck by some kind of ESP-inducing anomoly while the Enterprise crossed the Great Barrier at the edge of the galaxy.
Sally Kellerman is perhaps best known as "Hot Lips" Houllihan in the movie "MASH" (1970), which also co-starred Rene Auborjonois (Odo) and John Schuck (the Klingon ambassador from "Star Trek IV" and "Star Trek VI").
3. Which of the following species ran the Caretaker Array in "Star Trek: Voyager"?

Answer: Nacene

The Nacene were an unusual-looking non-humanoid species, whose technology had all but decimated the Ocampan homeworld by accident. More out of guilt than anything else, the Nacene began sustaining the Ocampa, earning the nickname "Caretaker" in the process. One Nacene, who had felt his life-force diminishing, attempted to procreate by bringing in several ships from the Aplha Quadrant in a search for a suitable mate. Ultimately, he failed.

After the Caretaker's death, the array was destroyed by Captain Janeway (Information from "Caretaker" and startrek.com).
4. The Vulcan Hand Salute is based upon a letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

Answer: True

Leonard Nimoy has told this famous story a time or two, so here is my rendition of it... When he was a kid growing up in Boston, his parents would take him to Temple on a regular basis. At one point during the ceremony, the rabbi would start a prayer, at which everyone was supposed to cover their eyes. Well, being as curious as any other kid, young Leonard would occasionally look up to see the rabbi holding both of his hands out, with fingers extended in a sort of V-shaped pattern.

This pattern was a representation of the Hebrew letter "shin," which is the first letter in the Hebrew word for "God" (It is also the first letter in "peace").

When principal photography began on the episode "Journey to Babel", Leonard Nimoy remembered the rabbi's hand gesture and, since Vulcans were a peaceful race, he suggested it to Gene Roddenberry as a means for Vulcans to greet each other.

The Great Bird loved it, and the Vulcan Hand Salute was born!
5. During the "Star Trek" movies, in which of the following locations was Janice Rand (Grace Lee Whitney) NOT seen?

Answer: Enterprise Bridge

In "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock", Rand was the red-headed woman who stood in the Spacedock Lounge and watched the battered Enterprise arrive from Genesis.
In "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", she was one of the Communications Offcers at Starfleet Headquarters during the Probe crisis.
And in "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country", she was the Communications Officer on the Excelsior, commanded by Captain Sulu.
But in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", Rand was operating the Enterprise Transporter in both of the scenes there; she never set foot on the Bridge of that ship in that or any other film.
6. What is the name of Captian Sulu's daughter?

Answer: Demora

We first met Ensign Demora Sulu (Jacqueline Kim) on the Bridge of the Enterprise-B, in "Star Trek: Generations". Captain Kirk, who was surprised to find Sulu had had time to raise a family, told her "It wouldn't be the Enterprise without a Sulu at the helm." A high honor, indeed.
7. The first time we saw Tuvok was in "Star Trek: Generations".

Answer: False

While Tim Russ did play a Starfleet officer on the Enterprise-B in "Star Trek: Generations", his character was both unnamed and very human (no pointed ears). And though, in the "Voyager" episode "Flashback", Tuvok did serve abord the Excelsior during the Khitomer incident of "Star Trek VI", he wasn't seen in the movie. Tim Russ' first appearance as Tuvok was in the "Voyager" pilot "Caretaker".
8. Which of the following occupations has NOT been represented among the guest cast in "Star Trek" history?

Answer: Bank Executive

Los Angeles-based radio hosts Mark Thompson and Brian Phelps (of the Mark & Brian Show) appeared in the "TNG" episode "Identity Crisis", as the fully-transformed alien beings who used to be La Forge's friends.
Former WWE wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson guest-starred in the "Voyager" episode "Tsunkatse", as the reigning champion of the epynomous sport.
And former football player Fred "The Hammer" Williamson, who had played for the Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco '49ers, and Oakland Raiders in the 1950s and 1960s, played Anka in the "TOS" episode "The Cloud Minders". Williamson is perhaps best known as "Spearchucker" Jones in "MASH" (1970), and he has appeared in several "Blaxploitation" movies of the 1970s.
Other non-acting professions represented in "Star Trek" guest cast history include physicist (Professor Stephen Hawking), professional basketball player (James Worthy), rock musician (Mick Fleetwood and Iggy Pop), attorney (Melvin Belli), and astronaut (Dr. Mae Jemison).
9. In which month is Chief O'Brien's birthday?

Answer: September

In the "DS9" episode "Whispers", Chief O'Brien makes a series of personal log entries that express suspicion of what appears to be some kind of conspiracy aboard the station. At first, he suspects that everyone is gearing up for a surprise party for him (which he hates), but "my birthday isn't until September." It turns out that it wasn't Chief O'Brien, but a very accurate replica of him.

The replica was designed to disrupt an upcoming peace negotiation in a civil war.
10. The U.S.S. Rio Grande (NCC-72452) was the only runabout attached to Deep Space Nine to survive the entire run of "DS9". Which of these runabouts was the first one destroyed?

Answer: U.S.S. Yangtze Kiang (NCC-72453)

The Yangtze Kiang was first, when it crash-landed on the penal moon in "Battle Lines". The Ganges was destroyed in "Armageddon Game" by a T'Lani cruiser, as a decoy to allow the escape of Dr. Bashir and Chief O'Brien in the Rio Grande. The Orinoco suffered a warp core breach due to sabotage in "Our Man Bashir". And the Mekong, which replaced the Yangtze Kiang, was abandoned in the Gamma Quadrant in "The Die Is Cast".
11. On "Enterprise", what is the name of the NX-02 starship?

Answer: Columbia

Introduced in Season 2's "The Expanse", NX-02 was under construction and expected to launch within 14 months of that episode. The ship's name, Columbia, was established in Season 3's "E˛". PERSONAL NOTE -- Early in 2003, I began work on an "Enterprise" story that designated the names of NX-class ships as Enterprise, Columbia, Endeavour, Challenger, Pathfinder, Atlantis, and Discovery. If these names sound familiar, that's because they are the names of the shuttle orbiters used by NASA since the early 1980s (Pathfinder is the name of the space shuttle simulator).

At the time, I deemed it appropriate, because the U.S.S. Enterprise is the first warp-5 ship, and the shuttle test vehicle was also named Enterprise (Thanks mostly to "Star Trek" fans).

By the way, Columbia, which was lost on February 1, 2003, was the first practical space shuttle to launch, in 1981. Though I never finished the story, I think it's great that it looks like Rick Berman & Co. thought the same as I did by returning the favor to NASA.
12. What is the date of Zephrame Cohrane's first warp flight?

Answer: April 5, 2063

In "Star Trek: First Contact", the Enterprise-E arrived through a Borg-created temporal rift to discover that the Borg had attempted to sabotage Cochrane's warp flight and, subsequently, first contact with the Vulcans (who just happened to be in the neighborhood).

After destroying the Borg sphere, Captain Picard asked Data for the exact date, which was April 4, 2063: The day before First Contact.
13. In the "TNG" episode "The Offspring", Data created a Soong-type android in an effort to procreate, resulting in Lal. The name Lal translates as "beloved" from what language?

Answer: Hindi

Initially, Lal was an androgynous android, allowed to pick its gender and appearance, eventually settling upon that of a human female. Lal very quickly began to show signs of development that far exceeded those of Data, but that development led to a cascade failure of her positronic net.

Despite valiant efforts by Data (assisted by Starfleet Admiral Haftel), Lal terminated after only a few days. Personally, I find it interesting that the then-emotionless Data would pick such a devotional name for his child.
14. Which of the following Starfleet personnel never got promoted while we saw him/her?

Answer: Beverly Crusher ("The Next Generation")

Riker became Captain in "Star Trek: Nemesis"; he also had received a temporary field promotion to Captain in "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II". Paris was demoted to Ensign in the "Voyager" episode "Thirty Days", then promoted back to Lieutenant in "Unimatrix Zero, Part I". Ezri Dax received her promotion to Lieutenant in the "DS9" episode "Afterimage", upon her appointment as station counselor.
But Dr. Crusher's rank remained at Commander during the established timeline for the entire run of "TNG" and the four movies in which she appeared. True, she was captain of the U.S.S. Pasteur in "All Good Things...", but that was in a possible, perhaps alternate, future. As a result, her status as Captain was not set in stone.
Of course, Harry Kim never made it past the rank of Ensign for the entire run of "Star Trek: Voyager".
15. What does MACO stand for?

Answer: Military Assault Command Operation

The MACOs joined the crew of the Enterprise (NX-01) when the ship was assigned to investigate the Xindi within the Delphic Expanse ("Enterprise" episode "The Expanse").
16. Which of the following "Star Trek" actors is related to a Major League Baseball player?

Answer: Cirroc Lofton

Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko) is the nephew of outfielder Kenny Lofton, who has played for the Houston Astros, San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, and (for most of his career) the Cleveland Indians.
17. Gul Dukat had a daughter with a Bajoran woman. What was the girl's name?

Answer: Tora Ziyal

Tora Ziyal was a teenager when Bajor was liberated. Because of her mixed heritage (and because Dukat didn't want her existence known on Cardassia, as it would ruin his family), she and her mother were sent to live on Lisseppia. But the Breen attacked the ship she was on, killing her mother, and she and the other survivors were forced to mine dilithium for several years.

As a young adult, she reunited with Dukat, resulting in a scandal that wrecked his career. Nonetheless, they re-formed their relationship together, until she was killed by Dukat's aide, Damar, in a fit of frustration (Information from startrek.com).
18. Commodore Matt Decker ("TOS" episode "The Doomsday Machine") and Captain Will Decker ("Star Trek: The Motion Picture") are related.

Answer: True

They are father and son, to be exact. Though never established on screen, the "Star Trek Encyclopedia" and startrek.com confirm their relationship. This is very likely the reason behind Admiral Kirk's initial recommendation for Will Decker to command the refitted Enterprise (NCC-1701).
19. The actor who portrayed Picard's nephew in the "TNG" episode "Family" also played him in "Star Trek: Generations".

Answer: False

The young René Picard was played David Tristan Birkin in "Family", and by Christopher James Miller in "Star Trek: Generations". David Tristan Birkin returned in the episode "Rascals", as the young Jean-Luc Picard (Information from imdb.com).
20. Not counting body doubles or voiceovers, how many different actors played Spock in "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock"?

Answer: Five

In "Star Trek III", David Marcus speculated that Spock's coffin must have soft-landed on the surface of Genesis while the gravity was still in fluctuation. As a result, Spock was reborn as a part of Genesis, and he grew up very rapidly. The actors who played Spock at advancing ages were (in order) Carl Steven (age 9), Vadia Potenza (age 13), Stephen Manley (age 17), Joe W. Davis (age 25), and (finally) Leonard Nimoy (Information from imdb.com).
