Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What holiday named for a fifth-century Frankish bishop is being celebrated by the Vikings in Danelaw at the start of the episode?

Answer: St. Brice's Day

The opening scene depicts a party being held by Vikings at their settlement in Danelaw on St. Brice's Day. The party is attended by Harald Sigurdsson and his brother, Sten. Sten eventually leads a group of soldiers to visit the King of England while Harald leaves for Norway.

St. Brice was the fourth bishop of the city of Tours, France. After serving as Bishop for thirty years Brice was accused of fathering a child. To prove his innocence Brice carried hot coals in his cloak and traveled to Rome to be exonerated by the Pope.
2. What 11th century English king orders the slaughter of the Vikings that have settled in England?

Answer: Æthelred II

The episode begins with text that describes how many Vikings left their homelands and settled across Europe. Their settlements in England were seen as a threat by King Æthelred II. The Viking leaders are sent to London for a feast and to discuss 'urgent' matters with Æthelred II but while there they are executed.

At the same time their settlement known as Danelaw is burned to the ground and the remaining women and children there are also killed. This slaughter took place on November 13, 1002 and it became known as St. Brice's Day massacre. Later, Æthelred II was known by the nickname 'The Unready'.
3. After the massacre at Danelaw, King Canute of Denmark calls out for all Vikings to exact revenge. At what location do these Vikings come together to form a massive army?

Answer: Kattegat, Norway

In "Vikings: Valhalla" Kattegat is a settlement in Norway where the Vikings unite to form a massive army. On their journey to Kattegat many of the Viking ships were lost due to a storm while traversing the North Sea. Historically, there has never been a Kattegat settlement in Norway, rather it is an area of sea bounded by the Jutland peninsula to the west and Sweden to the East.
4. When Freydis Eriksdottir meets Harald Sigurdsson she mentions that her voyage took five weeks without any stops. Impressed, what does Harald offer to Freydis?

Answer: A bath

Freydis Eriksdottir is the sister of Leif Eriksson and they had undertaken a voyage of five weeks to meet with the other Vikings. When Harald tells Freydis that he is impressed by her voyage she tells him that he is easily impressed. Flirtatiously, Harald tells Freydis that she probably needs a bath. Freydis agrees and they have intimate moments as well as that much needed bath.
5. What reason does Olaf Haraldsson give for not wanting to fight alongside the Vikings that have traveled from other lands?

Answer: They are pagans.

Olaf Haraldsson and his followers are devout Christians that do not want to fight with the other Vikings that arrived at Kattegat because they are pagans that do not share his religious beliefs. Just before a group of Christian Vikings and another group of pagan Vikings are about to fight each other Harad Sigurdsson (Olaf's half-brother) calms them down.

He makes a passionate speech telling all of the Vikings that the real enemy is the King of England, they must avenge those killed at Danelaw and that they all have Viking blood.

His passionate speech gets the attention of Leif Eriksson.
6. At a young age Freydis Eriksdottir was raped and a symbol was carved into her back. What symbol was painfully carved into her that scarred her for life?

Answer: Cross

While the other Vikings arrived at Kattegat to form an army to attack England, Leif Eriksson and Freydis Eriksdottir came to Kattegat for personal revenge. They both had crosses carved into their backs at a young age and Freydis was raped. The man responsible for this, Gunnar Magnusson, was at Kattegat at the same time allowing Leif and Freydis an opportunity for revenge.
7. Sharing a name with the episode title, what were the group of Vikings led by Leif Eriksson and Freydis Erikssdottir known as?

Answer: Greenlanders

Prior to traveling to Kattegat, Leif Eriksson and Freydis Erikssdottir lived in Greenland. When they heard that Gunnar Magnusson would likely be in Kattegat they traveled for five weeks to Norway. They brought a small crew of around twenty with them with the intention to kill Magnusson. In the episode both Leif's crew and other Viking groups refer to them as Greenlanders.
8. Just before the combined Viking forces start their mobilization, a group of men confront Leif Eriksson. Their leader tells Leif that his father was killed by Leif's father. Who was Leif's father who is credited as being one of the first settlers of Greenland?

Answer: Erik Thorvaldsson

Erik Thorvaldsson, commonly known as Erik the Red, was born in Norway around 950. While living in Iceland, Erik Thorvaldsson was banished for murder. During his exile, he explored and settled in Greenland. In "Vikings: Valhalla" Leif Eriksson is confronted by a man who claims that Erik the Red killed his father. Several men then attack Leif Eriksson but he is able to subdue all of them.

He tells them that he is not responsible for the actions of his father. Showing mercy, he lets them live.
9. While the Vikings are celebrating in the great hall of Jarl Haakon, Freydis Erikssdottir sneaks in and kills Gunnar Magnusson. What does she use to kill him?

Answer: Knife

While the others are eating and drinking, Freydis finds Gunnar and stabs him in the chest with a knife and gruesomely makes a cross shape deep into his body killing him. She did this as an act of revenge as Gunnar had raped and carved a symbol of a cross on her back years ago.

After Freydis kills Gunnar an enraged Olaf Haraldsson seeks to kill her as Gunnar was a friend and fellow soldier. However, Harald Sigurdsson has Freydis show the other Vikings the cross scar on her back and tells the other Vikings that Freydis killing Gunnar was justified. Jarl Haakon then tells Olaf that they will decide the fate of Freydis the next day.
10. One of the stars of the first episode of "Vikings: Valhalla", what Swedish actress played the part of Freydis Eriksdottir?

Answer: Frida Gustavsson

Frida Gustavsson was born in Stockholm in 1993 and she began modelling in 2008 and shortly after she appeared in ads for Maybelline. Her breakout acting role was in 2019 when she appeared on the hit Netflix show "The Witcher" as Ma / Visenna, the mother of Geralt. In "Vikings: Valhalla", Frida portrayed Freydis Eriksdottir, the strong-willed sister of Leif Eriksson.
