"Vikings: Valhalla" S1: E2 Trivia Quiz

The second episode of "Vikings: Valhalla" opens with Leif and Freydis locked up. After Freydis says that she feels cleansed, Leif admits that they will likely be killed otherwise the Christians may burn the city. Even so, Leif tells his sister he is proud of her for exacting revenge on the man that raped and scarred her.

Answer: Harald Sigurdsson

Since he laid eyes on Freydis Eriksdottir at the docks in Kattegat, Harald Sigurdsson was enamored by her. Previously he had saved her life in the great hall after she killed the man who raped her by telling the other Vikings the action was just. At Freydis's trial she proposes a trial by combat with Olaf to prove her innocence.

However, Harald proposes that Freydis is able to stay alive under the watch of King Canute and Jarl Haakon so long as Leif Eriksson assists the Vikings on their journey to England.

Answer: Five months

Before the Vikings leave Freydis is visited by Harald who tells her that five months is a long time to be gone and that she better say goodbye to her friends. After she bids farewell to her fellow Greenlanders she gives Harald a necklace for him to remember her while he is gone.

Answer: Put your weapons in the barrel.

Leif's crew was split between Greenlanders that were pagans and Christian Vikings. Tension started quickly prompting Leif to order the crew to put their weapons including knives and axes in a barrel. Leif tells his crew that the enemy is not on their boat and that weapons are not needed to row.

Answer: He is sick and bedridden.

The first episode of "Vikings: Valhalla: depicts King Aethelred II of England in good health but by the second episode which takes place one year later he is sick and bedridden. He informs his wife, Emma of Normandy, about options for negotiating peace with the Vikings and strategies to defend England.

Answer: Polar bear

From the beginning of their voyage, Jarl Gorm did not believe that Leif Eriksson was fit to captain their boat. When Leif tells Jarl he has never killed a man before Jarl responds that it is different because men fight back. To this Leif says "so do polar bears".

In spite of being ordered to surrender his weapons, Jarl hides a battle axe and ends up killing Birger. Jarl then challenges Leif to be captain of their ship and Leif vanquishes him effectively killing a man for the first time.

Answer: Godwin of Wessex

In "Vikings: Valhalla" Godwin of Wessex is first advisor to King Aethelred II. As Aethelred's health deteriorates Queen Emma summons Godwin to accompany her son Edmund to command Eadric Streona to deliver troops to support England in the upcoming war with the Vikings.

Historically, Godwin was proclaimed the Earl of Wessex by King Cnut (Canute) in 1020. Around 1022 Godwin's son, Harold Godwinson, was born. His son would become King Harold II in January 1066 but just nine months later he would die at the Battle of Hastings ending Anglo-Saxon rule over England.

Answer: Courage

Harald tells Canute that Leif Eriksson has courage derived from the confidence he has in his own abilities that allows him to be great. Harald contrasts Leif's courage with others who seemingly derive courage from banging shields and making speeches.

Answer: Uppsala

Jarl notices Freydis buying a wooden figure of Yggdrasil (Tree of Life in Norse myth) to burn as an offering to the gods to keep her brother Leif Eriksson and her lover Harald Sigurdsson safe. This prompts Jarl to tell Freydis that there are still places where the old ways of believing in the myths and Norse gods is still practiced.

She implores Freydis to travel to Uppsala in Sweden to learn these ways before it is overrun by Christian forces.

Answer: Bells were ringing.

Rather abruptly, Godwin gets off his horse and bows to Edmund telling him that the bells are tolling because Edmund's father, Aethelred, has died. Earlier in the episode Edmund tells Godwin that he is not ready to be king because he voices his doubts. Ready or not, the role of king is thrust upon Edmund but he still looks up to his mother Emma and his advisor Godwin for counsel.
