Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Episode three of "Vikings: Valhalla" begins with a battle between the Vikings and the English army. In what county known for its gardens in South East England did this fighting take place?

Answer: Kent

The county of Kent is bordered by the Thames Estuary and the North Sea to the north and east and the Straits of Dover and English Channel to the south. Its location in the southeastern corner of England made it susceptible to the Viking invasion depicted in "Vikings: Valhalla". The battle was more of a slaughter by the Vikings with the city being overrun in just one hour.
2. After the Vikings overrun the English army in South East England they take several women as prisoners. Imploring him that their invasion is pointless, what information does the Lady of the town tell King Canute?

Answer: King Aethelred II died ten days ago.

The Lady of Kent and some other women were hiding under the floor in a building while the battle of Kent was going on. While Olaf Haraldsson was searching this building he noticed that the floor squeaked so he pulled up a floorboard and found the women hiding. Even after the Lady of Kent tells King Canute of Denmark that King Aethelred II, the man responsible for massacring Vikings one year prior at Danelaw, is dead it is decided that the invasion will continue anyway.

Originally, the goal of the Vikings getting together to invade England was for revenge and to kill Aethelred II.
3. After he prays over his deceased father's body, what item does Prince Edmund take from it?

Answer: Sword

As we found out in a prior scene, King Aethelred II had died just 10 days prior. Rather than waiting until after the Viking invasion to have his coronation, Prince Edmund desires to have his coronation expedited so he can march with the English army south to confront the Vikings.

However, both his mother Emma and his advisor Godwin tell him he is too valuable. After Edmund takes his father's sword he trains with some of his soldiers.
4. As the Viking army is invading Southern England Emma implores her son Edmund to not go into battle but rather let Eadric Streona lead an army. What Anglo Saxon region did Streona rule?

Answer: Mercia

After King Aethelred II's death Edmund became the ruler of England. His mother, Emma, wanted to delay his coronation but Edmund desired to have the coronation as soon as possible. Additionally, Emma thought Edmund was too valuable to England to lead the English army in battle against the Vikings.

However, Edmund felt that if Eadric Streona of Merica led the English army into battle the influential English nobles would then want Streona as their king. When the Anglo Saxons settled in Britain in the 5th century a Heptarchy of seven kingdoms was established that included East Anglia, Mercia, Northumbria, Wessex, Essex, Kent and Sussex. Mercia was built upon the River Trent in modern-day Midlands England.
5. What style of warfare associated with the Vikings did Harald and Liv celebrate after their first victory in Southern England?

Answer: Raiding

Viking raids were frequently done against coastal towns where Viking warships could land with hundreds of soldiers. These soldiers were skilled in close combat with weapons like swords, battle axes and shields. After their victory in Kent, Harald congratulated Leif on his first raid while Liv and the rest of the Greenlanders celebrate with drinks and stolen coins.
6. While Godwin provides guidance to Edmund he tells him that one of his character flaws is his true enemy and the Vikings will exploit it. What is this flaw associated with many headstrong leaders?

Answer: Arrogance

Edmund's soldiers allow Edmund to defeat them while sparring prompting Edmund to exclaim "bring on the Vikings". This comment disturbs his advisor, Godwin, who spars with Edmund without any spectators and easily defeats him. Godwin implores Edmund to control his arrogance so that the Vikings do not use it against him.
7. On the road to Uppsala Freydis and her traveling group are attacked by a Berserker. How does Freydis kill this Berserker?

Answer: Chokes him

As Freydis and her traveling group are resting by a river the Berserker spots them and sees their pagan items. The Berserker then kills most of Freydis's group but she is able to wrap a rope necklace around his neck and eventually subdue him in spite of him being much larger than her.
8. When Leif and Harald lead a Viking scouting party they are ambushed before making it to the bridge. How were they spotted so easily?

Answer: They had lit torches to see the path.

As Harald, Leif and a local guide lead the Viking scouting group through the tall marsh grasses they have a hard time following the path and they decide to light torches. This proves to be a fatal mistake because when they get to the water they are ambushed by English archers who kill some of their group members. Leif Erikson is assumed to be dead as Harald and the remaining Greenlanders go back to the Viking camp.
9. After Harald goes back to find Leif in the marsh the two decide to scout the bridge. What part of the bridge does Leif look at as vulnerable?

Answer: Bottom piles

Leif and Harald gain access to the bridge by joining a wandering group of peasants crossing the bridge. While doing so the drawbridge is raised and Leif focuses on the bottom piles. Silently Leif shows Harald what he is looking at down below.
10. What is the name of the leader of the Berserkers who finds his fallen comrade at the end of the episode?

Answer: Jarl Kare

Jarl Kare and some of his fellow Berserkers find the body of their dead ally and two trails of blood leading away. Jarl commands his men to "find them" after he sees that his fellow Berserker was choked to death with visible rope burns.
