TV Weddings have been around as long as test patterns and are a good way to boost ratings. Using the brides as the focal point this quiz looks at some that piqued my interest.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Liz Lemon from "30 Rock" always wanted to be a princess so, as which intergalactic royalty did she arrive as for her wedding to Criss Chros?

Answer: Leia

If you ever wanted an example of a totally unromantic television wedding proposal look no further than this one. Liz has seen her slimy ex adopt a baby with little difficulty simply because he was married. She turns to her partner Criss and says "We may as well get married". "So, let's do it" responds Criss. And on that note they hurried off down to City Hall to get the job done. Thanks to Criss forgetting to bring along their birth certificates it doesn't happen however, in the process, Liz discovers that she does want this day to be a little special, that she does want to be that little princess and she does want to wear that white dress on her wedding day. So, she rocks up in her Princess Leia outfit - "It's the only white dress that I own" she insists.
2. Lily and Marshall, from "How I Met Your Mother", are about to get married when Lily's high school boyfriend shows up. What is his name?

Answer: Scooter

Lily had no intention to and certainly did not invite Scooter. Lily's mum, who tries to avoid the blame by stating "I didn't invite that professional squash player Dad busted you with", was the culprit. To stir the pot Scooter is still in love with Lily and he's determined to win her back before she ties the knot with Marshall. It's safe to say that Scooter does not succeed even though he goes to the extreme of trying to win her heart by quoting lyrics by Guns 'n' Roses. Like all good TV weddings Lily's problems don't end there. She has no flowers for the ceremony, her veil has been ruined, her photographer is replaced by a telephone camera and her harp player has issues. Just as Lily (and Marshall) feels the wedding is falling apart Ted saves the day. He reminds Lily that she'd always dreamed of having a small wedding, to forget the reception (for now) and get married in the park. And so they do, with Ted and Robyn (as witnesses) and Barney (recently licensed to marry people) being the only others present. They then return to the reception without anyone else knowing that they were already wed.

(Additional trivia) Scooter, in this episode, was played by David Burtka who, at the time, was Neil Patrick Harris' (Barney) real-life boyfriend.
3. One of the most memorable weddings from "The Game of Thrones" television series became known as "The Red Wedding". Most will recall the massacre that took place but which one of Walder Frey's daughters was married that day?

Answer: Roslin

Roslin Frey was supposed to have married King Robb Stark as part of a deal brokered between her father and Catelyn Stark. The alliance would allow the Starks to cross the river at the Twins and gain a tactical advantage over the Lannisters. Before this could take place Robb had fallen for and married Talisa Maegyr, a Volantis noblewoman who had been working as a healer on the battlefields of the Westerlands. To placate the Freys, King Robb puts forth his brother-in-law, Edmure Tully, as an alternate husband for Roslin. The formal eating of bread and salt with a guest is seen in the land as providing protection for a guest whilst under your roof. To break this bond was to incur the wrath of the gods. It was under this (false) security that King Robb and his entourage entered the Twins for the wedding. At the completion of the formal ceremony Roslin leaves with her husband to (safety) another part of the castle to consummate the marriage. The Starks are then ruthlessly betrayed and slaughtered. It is not revealed whether or not Roslin was aware of her part in this.

This episode, "The Rains of Castamere", was the ninth episode of season three in the series. It earned its writers, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.
4. "Joanie Loves Chachi", launched in 1982, was a spin-off of "Happy Days" but Joanie's wedding to Chachi took place on "Happy Days".

Answer: True

For years we watched Joanie Cunningham growing from "Shortcake" to a mature woman and, in much the same way, we followed her on again/off again relationship with Fonzie's cousin Charles "Chachi" Arcola. The audience grew to love the pair so much the studio gave them their own series so that they could explore their relationship in depth.

They also had them move from Milwaukee to Chicago as they tried to forge a career with a rock and roll band at the time of the "British Invasion". The series failed and the pair return to Milwaukee and the set of "Happy Days".

Their wedding was a simple and heartfelt ceremony that was supposed to be the finale of the show and a good excuse to get most of the old gang back together one last time.
5. Which singer, who'd recorded "Impossible Princess" played Charlene Mitchell, whose marriage to Scott Robinson on the soap opera "Neighbours" was one of the highest rating events on Australian television?

Answer: Kylie Minogue

First she "decked" him and then she married him. Scott first met Charlene in 1986 when he mistook her for an intruder at his neighbour's home. After challenging her he copped a punch in the face for his troubles and found out that Charlene was his neighbour's daughter. The Robinson's and their neighbours, The Ramsays, had been feuding for ages giving their early romance a touch of some "Romeo and Juliet" quality except here there was an abundance of bad hair and bleached denim prevalent. Charlene and Scott's wedding was an explosion of Chantilly lace and ivory silk (and more bad hair) and ratings that went through the roof. Unusually, for TV weddings, most things went smoothly and without a hitch. Unlike Romeo and Juliet, Charlene and Scott were not killed off, they simply drove off into the sunset and were last reported to be living happily in Queensland and had raised two children. Many years later their 23 year old son Daniel would make an appearance in Ramsay Street.
Kylie (Minogue) used that exit to start a music career that has seen her rated as one of the most influential women in pop music. Her album "Impossible Princess" was released in 1997. The other ladies mentioned as answer options all had roles on "Neighbours" and would go on to varied levels of success in the music industry.
(Additional trivia) The theme song to Charlene and Scott's wedding, "Suddenly" by Angry Anderson, was a Top Ten hit in both Australia and the UK and was chosen by Kylie as the song she would play at her own future wedding.
6. The television series "Friends" provided us with a number of weddings during its ten seasons. In what was arguably the sweetest wedding of all which one of these ladies married Mike Hannigan?

Answer: Phoebe

During season nine Joey and Phoebe decide to set up a double date with blind dates for each other. Joey, as usual, forgets and (last minute) grabs a stranger (Mike) off the street. The date turns out to be a disaster but a relationship between Phoebe and Mike was kindled. Eventually things got really serious. We got the hint that something was sparking between the two when Phoebe gave Mike the key to her apartment.

The wedding day for the quirky couple arrived in season ten and events conspired to turn it on its head, however, not even a massive blizzard in New York or the loss of a priest was going to deter these two. Phoebe and Mike would marry (appropriately) outside the Central Perk Coffee Shop, Monica serves as Phoebe's maid of honour, Rachel is a bridesmaid and Chandler has the privilege of giving Phoebe away. Ross gets to carry the groomsman, Mike's dog, down the aisle and Joey steps up to be the minister for the ceremony.
7. Amy Pond was the first companion of the eleventh Doctor in the "Doctor Who" television series. She marries Rory Williams. Were they, Amy and Rory, schoolyard friends?

Answer: Yes

Apologies for being brief here but to try and squeeze the full extent of Amy and Rory's relationship in here would be way too difficult. Amy, Rory and Mels (Melody) were best friends at school. What Amy and Rory didn't realise at the time was that Mels was really their daughter from the 52nd century. (Are you starting to see what I'm up against?) Rory was always too shy to make the moves on Amy which left Amy with the idea that Rory was gay.

It took Melody in the episode "Let's Kill Hitler" to bring the two together.

In some ways this makes Melody responsible for her own conception. Amy first encounters the Doctor in 1996 as a little girl. At this point the Doctor promises to return to her. In the same episode, "The Eleventh Hour", the Doctor does return and enlists Amy's aid in defeating the villain of the piece. Whereas the Doctor thinks only five minutes have elapsed it is actually twelve years and Amy and Rory are now more than just friends. Yet again the Doctor leaves but returns two years later on the 25th June, 2010.

This triggers a series of adventures for Amy that includes being put to sleep for 2,000 years. Here's the problem, Amy was supposed to marry Rory on the 26th June, 2010. Suffice to say, the Doctor is a Time Lord and he gets Amy back on time for the wedding.
8. Mary Morstan is set to marry John Watson in the second episode of the third series of "Sherlock" but it is almost called off when John discovers which of the following about Mary?

Answer: She is a trained assassin

Mary and John meet after Sherlock's (supposed) death and are a steady item for six months before John proposes to Mary. Mary had worked alongside John as a nurse and presented as a sweet, kind-hearted and intelligent woman, however, it is only when an associate from her former life surfaces and threatens to reveal her identity that her dark side is revealed.

Sherlock deduces Mary's past and John overhears the revelation from Mary that she was trained to kill. This leads to a parting of ways between Mary and John.

It is John who reconciles with Mary stating that her past is not his business but her future would be his privilege. Sherlock is the best man at the wedding and finds that writing the best man's speech is one of the hardest things that he has been called upon to do.

Sherlock also manages to solve a murder mystery during the course of the wedding and deduces that Mary is pregnant, however, this is with John's child.
9. Amy seems to be the perfect match for Robert Barone ("Everybody Loves Raymond") but their wedding day looks to be a disaster until they step out onto the floor for their first dance as husband and wife to which Elvis Presley song?

Answer: A Little Less Conversation

Amy, very sensitive and from a deeply religious family, has had a sort of "will they/won't they" relationship with Robert during the course of the first six seasons of the show. The main reason is that their two families, the MacDougalls and the Barones, do not get along with each other. Eventually these tribulations served to make the bond between them so much stronger and lends to their marriage in season seven. On that day Robert gets so nervous that he hides in the bathroom, the priest goes walkabout, Frank complains that the event doesn't have an open bar and, just as the happy couple are about to tie the knot, Marie stands up to object about the wedding.

The reception is heading down a similar path until "that" dance. It allows Amy and Robert to stop being so formal and really showcase their personalities.
10. Buffy marries Angel during a dream sequence in season three of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". What happens when the happy couple leave the church?

Answer: Buffy bursts into flames

In his dream Angel is anxious about stepping out of the church and into the sun but in a twist it is the human (Buffy) who bursts into flames and dies. Angel awakes, reeling from his nightmare, wondering if this is a sign telling him that should he marry Buffy it would destroy her. The dream may have been triggered by a visit Angel had received from Joyce, Buffy's mother, who expresses her concerns about their relationship.
Joyce: "She's still just a girl".
Angel: "And I'm old enough to be her ancestor".
The episode is called "The Prom" and it proves to be a significant step in the series. The above events are factors in Angel breaking off his relationship with Buffy and he soon leaves Sunnydale and heads off to Los Angeles.

The breaking of the sequence here and not viewing it from the bride's perspective was deliberate. After all, this wedding didn't really happen.
