Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Joe Gerard
Answer: Rhoda
"Rhoda" was a spin-off of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", where Rhoda Morgenstern moved from Minneapolis to Manhattan, and married Joe Gerard, the owner of a wrecking company. Valerie Harper played the eponymous Rhoda, while David Groh was her hunky husband (until the third season). The show ran from 1974 to 1978. Anyone remember Rhoda running around New York City in her wedding dress?
2. Kirk Van Houten
Answer: Luann
Unless you are not a fan of "The Simpsons", currently the longest running scripted TV program, this was probably an easy one. Milhouse Mussolini Van Houten, Bart's 'bestie', was traumatized by the dissolution of his parents' marriage. In 1996, in "A Milhouse Divided", Kirk and Luann were divorced. "The Simpsons" began airing in 1989.
3. Larry David
Answer: Cheryl
"Curb Your Enthusiasm" is a comedy created by "Seinfeld" co-creator Larry David. The show first aired on HBO in 2000. Larry plays Larry David, as he encounters and complains about all of life's irritations. When Larry was divorced in real life, he reflected his status on the show, in 2011, by divorcing his TV wife, Cheryl, played by Cheryl Hines.
4. Lucious Lyon
Answer: Cookie
Talk about your explosive relationships..."Empire" is the story of the CEO of Empire Entertainment, Lucious Lyon, and his family, including his ex-wife Cookie and his three sons. There is a lot of deception, betrayal and hip hop music, as they all fight for ownership of the empire. The show first aired in 2015, with Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson as the leads.
5. Richard Campbell Sr.
Answer: Christine
Richard Campbell Sr., played by Clark Gregg, is the father of Ritchie Campbell on "The New Adventures of Old Christine", a comedy which aired from 2006 to 2010. Christine Campbell, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, is a recently divorced mom who must learn to cope with single motherhood. This was actually the first show to break the "Seinfeld Curse".
6. Frasier Crane
Answer: Lilith
Before "Frasier", "sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name", there was "Cheers", from 1982 to 1993. This is where we first met psychiatrists Dr. Frasier Crane and his frigid ex-wife Lilith Sternin Crane. Frasier was, of course, played by Kelsey Grammer, with Bebe Neuwirth as his former spouse and the mother of their son, Frederick.
7. Don Draper
Answer: Betty
Set in the turbulent 1960s, "Mad Men" was about the lives and loves of Manhattan advertising executives (not your mother's "McMann and Tate"). John Hamm played Don Draper who was originally married to Elizabeth (Betty) Hofstadt Draper, played by January Jones. After their divorce, they both remarried (other people). The show ran from 2007 to 2015.
8. Andrew Meyer
Answer: Selina
Politician Selina Eaton married Andrew Meyer and they had a daughter named Catherine. Andrew (played by David Pasquesi) was a cheater and, after twelve years of marriage, an ex-husband. Selina was originally a Senator from Maryland who rose to the rank of vice president (and later to the presidency). "VEEP" began airing on HBO in 2012 and has garnered Julia Louis-Dreyfus many consecutive Emmys for her role.
9. Leo Markus
Answer: Grace
I was a big fan of the original "Will and Grace" which ran from 1998 until the finale in 2006. The comedy centered around a gay lawyer and his best friend who was an interior decorator. Then, in Season 5, Grace Adler (Debra Messing) married Leo (Harry Connick Jr.) moved to Brooklyn and, by the end of season 6, asked for a divorce. Fast forward a dozen years to rebooted season 9 where everything old is new again.
10. Stan Zbornak
Answer: Dorothy
It seems, at least on TV, that one of the main causes of divorce is cheating husbands. On "Golden Girls", Dorothy and Stan Zbornak had been married for 38 years when Stan started fooling around with a stewardess, leading to a divorce, with Dorothy moving in with Blanche, Rose and Sophia. This wonderful show ran from 1985 to 1992, with Bea Arthur as Dorothy and Herb Edelman as Stan.
11. Steve Roades
Answer: Marcy
Anyone remember the incredibly dysfunctional Bundy family on "Married with Children"? Well, surprisingly, Al and Peg Bundy remained married, while their next door neighbors, Steve and Marcy Roades, wound up divorced. Marcy, played by Amanda Bearse, dumped Steve (David Garrison) and married Jefferson D'Arcy (Ted McGinley) in season 5. The show ran for eleven years, from 1986 to 1997.
12. Jeff Martin
Answer: Erica
Way back in 1970, Susan Lucci began playing the role of Erica Kane on "All My Children". Her very first husband was Jeff Martin, played by Charles Frank. Lucci has played the role for over 40 years, with seven men in her six marriages . In 1999, she won her first Daytime Emmy, after 18 tries. In case you're wondering, her full name: Erica Kane Martin Brent Cudahy Chandler Montgomery Chandler Marick Montgomery.
13. Michael Mancini
Answer: Jane
It's 1992 when we are first introduced to the steamy machinations of the beautiful, young adults living in "Melrose Place" in California. The conflicts, the betrayals, the sex, the fashion... This prime-time soap opera featured Thomas Calabro as Dr. Michael Mancini, surgeon and dedicated husband of Jane (Josie Bisset), at least until the end of the first season and his affair with Kimberly and subsequent divorce.
The original show ran until 1999.
14. Blake Carrington
Answer: Alexis
Speaking of prime-time soap operas, "Dynasty" was one of the soapiest. Set in the opulent 80s, the show told the story of two wealthy, feuding families, i.e., the Carringtons and the Colbys, living in Denver, Colorado. John Forsythe ("Charlie's Angels") played patriarch Blake Carrington, with Joan Collins portraying ex-wife Alexis and Linda Evans as current wife Krystle.
The show aired from 1981 to 1989.
15. Maura Pfefferman
Answer: Shelly
Confused? If you've never seen the cable show "Transparent", I don't blame you. You see, Morton Pfefferman, played by Jeffrey Tambor, has become Maura, a "trans woman". Maura has "come out" to her family and divorced his wife Shelly (Judith Light) for obvious reasons. "Transparent" began airing in 2014 but, in 2018, Tambor was fired, ironically, for sexual harassment allegations.
