Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the episode a new morning has dawned on the island (day 49). Who is the first survivor to be seen?

Answer: An unknown man on the beach

The beach was calm in the morning after the return of missing survivors with their tail section companions. As the camera pans down the beach the giant signal fire blazes to the right while an unknown survivor holds a pole/spear of some type and stretches his arms while standing in the surf.
Further down the beach, where the line of tarp tents occupied, Jin emerged with Sun behind him. Hurley was nearby and gave Jin a thumbs-up of approval, while Sun sadly gazed at Sayid digging in the sand.
In the hatch, the delirious and partially conscious Sawyer whispered to Jack, "I love her". Jack took this with disappointment and assumed it was Kate to whom Sawyer referred.
Meanwhile an exhausted Kate gathered mangoes from a tree (nearly falling off the trunk on the way down), at which point she encountered yet another mysterious island inhabitant in the jungle-- or was it a ghost from the past?-- a beautiful black stallion.
2. In Kate's first flashback she is seen assisting a drunken Wayne into the house. While walking toward the kitchen, a large shelf upon which various household trinkets are placed passes in front of the view. Which item is not among those seen?

Answer: A framed star-shaped medal

Kate is seen on a quiet night on the Iowa farm, opening and closing a lighter (a prelude for what was to come, as the lighter was soon to become a weapon). When the drunken Wayne arrives, Kate helps him stagger into the house in much the same manner as she later helps Sawyer exit the hatch.
On a decorative shelf which passes in front as Kate and Wayne stumble through the kitchen six items pass by quickly: A decorated jar of some kind (which appears to have a handle); a framed photo of a dark-haired man in a suit (whose face is blurred as the camera passes, but he appears to be wearing sunglasses); a figurine of a brown horse; another decoration of some type (which seems to consist of a spherical tube poised over a small globe?); a shiny silver or gold trophy cup; and a framed photo of a woman in purple (possibly a younger Diane).
Minutes later Kate leaves on a motorcycle and the house explodes. Kate paid a visit to her mother Diane at the coffee diner immediately after the incident (recall that Diane is seen later when Kate returns to visit her in the hospital, and is very ill and frightened of Kate).
While at the diner, two notes can be made. Kate tells Diane that she is 24, which gives a time reference to when this all began. Second, Kate brings attention to Diane's injured wrist (and we can see by Kat's reaction that it was not injured by a shelf, as her mother claimed). Kate left the diner, and we later learn that her mother had turned her in (leading to her arrest at the bus station).
This episode provided the missing link to Kate's known chain of events which comprised her life as a fugitive. Now her first crime had been committed and her life on the run was about to begin.
3. During the proceedings at the funeral, uneasiness runs high as the survivors are forced to bury another of their own. What does Sayid add to Shannon's grave?

Answer: Nothing

The survivors gather around the beach to bury yet another of their own. Shannon's grave is beside two others already present (Boone's, the site at which she had been just the day prior, and mostly likely the other belonged to Scott, the man killed by Ethan). This brings the survivor count to 42 of the original 48 fuselage survivors-- Aaron makes 43-- and the total count is now 52, with the addition of the 4 tail section survivors. When referencing the timeline for the 49 days spent on the island, Shannon and Boone died only a week apart.
At the funeral Sayid holds rosary as he speaks to the crowd but breaks down and leaves, nodding for Jack to continue. Jack initiates the burial by first calling upon everyone gathered to add a handful of soil.
Sayid returns later when only Kate is present and places the rosary on Shannon's cross.
Listening closely to Sayid's words, it is brought to attention the fact that the events taking place in the last seven weeks had happened as a result of only one event (the plane crash) and none of the survivors would have even spoken had it not occurred. This coincides with Locke's theory that "everything happened for a reason".
When Sayid meets Kate at the gravesite later that afternoon and she asks if he believes in ghosts, Sayid reveals that he had seen Walt in the jungle just before Shannon's death.
4. While meeting in the jungle, Kate asked Charlie if he believed there could be horses on the island. In response Charlie replied, "I've seen ___________. I've seen _____________."

Answer: polar bears; monsters

During Shannon's funeral proceedings, Kate was left in charge of button and Sawyer in the hatch.
Notice that Kate plays a Patsy Cline record on the record player. Back in Australia Kate and Ray had listened to Patsy Cline just before Kate was about to be turned over to the Marshall.
Many island events in this episode seem to relate directly to past events which affected Kate.
While alone with Sawyer, he begins whispering (still unconscious) and grabs her throat, seemingly possessed by a ghost asking "Why did you kill me?" (Wayne?) While many direct and indirect parallel circumstances between Sawyer and Wayne occur, this behavior more closely mirrors that of the Marshall just after the plane crash. Recall that when the Marshall lay gravely injured by a shrapnel embedded in his side, he continually whispered to Jack "she's dangerous" (referring to Kate) and eventually he also grabbed Kate's throat and attempted to choke her.
Kate proceeds to flee the hatch and escape into the jungle in much distress. There she encounters Charlie, who informs her that some of the "new people" came to the funeral. Charlie mentions "Lord of the Flies", a prior reference to which was made by Sawyer in an earlier episode.
Kate walks off deep in thought and Charlie returns to the beach, where he is approached by Jack concerning Kate's whereabouts. (When Charlie asked if anything was wrong, Jack simply replied that everything was fine-- obviously not that much has changed between them since day one.)
5. In Kate's flashback she is seen in a bus station where she has an unknowing encounter with Edward Mars, the Marshal who was tracking her. When looking around the station at least two other agents are seen, one of whom is reading a periodical and the other of whom is where?

Answer: At a pay phone

Charlie's asking Kate where she was going intercedes with a flashback in which Kate is seen in a bus station, buying a one-way ticket to Tallahassee (and a route to freedom). An intrusive man standing behind her is revealed to be the Edward Mars, the U.S. Marshal who followed her thereafter, and Kate was arrested for murder.
Just before being apprehended Kate noticed the two agents, became nervous and tried to make an escape. The Marshal revealed that Kate's mother had turned her in, and she became a prisoner for the first time.
It was indicated in a previous episode that the Marshal would proceed to follow Kate for three years, with several fatalities and run-ins along the way, and always an escape-- even on the island.
6. Mr. Eko finally removes the broken handcuff from Jin's wrist in this episode, which Jin has been wearing since one of the first days on the island.

Answer: False

It is Locke who, using a bolt cutter from the hatch, finally relieves Jin of the shackle which linked him to a violent past.
Jin's freedom from a restriction parallels that of Kate's while on the island.
Recall in the early episodes depicting the days just after the crash, Kate told the Marshall that she had gotten away and the Marshall replied, "You don't look free to me."
Two episodes later, Jin was shackled (in Kate's handcuffs, nonetheless) to a piece of the plane after attacking Michael. Kate's liberation came upon seeing the horse, and Locke reinforced Jin's release by saying he was "free at last". (It seems Jin and Kate both were.)
Meanwhile in the hatch, Michael examines the structure of the hatch and finds that there are "blast doors" installed in case of an explosion (perhaps the consequences of not resetting the timer?). This serves to promote Locke's dedication to the continuance of pressing the "doomsday button".
Locke hopes the film Desmond left behind would explain, and offers to show it to Michael and Mr. Eko.
7. What did Kate tell Jack she thought was "crazy"?

Answer: The island

Upon returning to the hatch after the funeral, Locke and Jack had found the compound buzzing with the alarm of the dangerously low timer (at 0:23 seconds), Sawyer laying on the ground unconscious and Kate nowhere to be found.
Jack proceeds down the beach while Locke barely succeeds in entering the code in time (with one second to spare before reaching the 0:00). His sigh of relief signifies his deep fear and belief in what the button is capable of.
Jack eventually finds a distraught Kate in the jungle after consulting Charlie, and demands to know what happened. After a brief, desperate struggle Kate breaks down in Jack's arms and confides about the island "this place is crazy" and it was causing her to become so.
This is certainly not the first situation in which the possibility of "going crazy" surfaced for the survivors. Between the flashbacks from the past, the whispers, paranoia, and the bizarre and haunting island illusions, quite a few of the survivors had already experienced a great deal of psychological trauma relating to this place. The question was always whether or not to believe what was thought to be seen.
Recall that Jack had seen ghostly appearances of his deceased father on the island, and contended to Locke that he must be going crazy. Locke replied, "You're not going crazy. Crazy people don't know they're going crazy. They think they're getting saner."
Locke assessed that what Jack was chasing was like the "white rabbit" in "Alice in Wonderland" (a comparison in relation to the black stallion, through which Kate found freedom?)
While at the hatch, Hurley and Jack shared a discussion about being "crazy" as well, and the adjective was also applied to Danielle Rousseau on several occasions (with unanticipated results).
When Kate later confesses to Sayid that she believes she is going crazy, Sayid asks her rhetorically if seeing Walt made him crazy. Whether or not such apparitions to the survivors is linked to the mysterious "sickness" mentioned by Danielle is questionable.
Jack proceeds to comfort Kate, and they share the first Kate-initiated, non-blackmailed kiss since the arrival on the island. Immediately after Kate runs away, more confused than ever, leaving Jack alone as she is forced to face her past.
8. Locke did not believe the missing splices in the film were of any importance.

Answer: True

After showing film, which is seen to contain at least four splices of missing footage in the sequence. Michael is incredulous to find that the survivors had been pushing the button every two hours and was puzzled about the purpose of it all, while Mr. Eko walked away without a word-- but a very contemplative expression.
When Michael questions Locke about the "missing pieces", Locke stated that it seemed to be only "a frame here and there", and nothing important. (Quite a startling conjecture for Locke to say.)
Locke allows Michael to explore the computer hardware, and meets up with Mr. Eko in the simulated-sunlit kitchen.
Mr. Eko proceeds to tell the biblical story of Josiah rebuilding the temple, and the finding of the ancient Book of Law which allowed the temple to be rebuilt. Locke appears rather unconcerned, until Mr. Eko relates the story to a place found on the island-- the bunker on the other side-- and uncovers the Holy Bible from the trunk.
Locke opens the Bible to 2 Chronicles Chapter 6, the page on the right ending with 6:18, which discusses the construction of the temple. There he finds the square removed from the book and a piece of the film inserted inside! (Now how can THAT be...)
This suggests that the film (and Bible) are linked back to the Nigerian beech craft, since the radio found in the trunk matched the one Boone used to make a transmission and the body inside was dressed as a priest. One fact concerning the plane was certain-- it was not at all what it appeared to be. (Nor were the heroin-loaded statues of the Virgin Mary.)
How and why a missing splice of the Dharma film was hidden inside the Bible in the bunker across the island, possibly from the beech craft, is yet to be discovered.
9. What did the car, in which the Marshal was escorting Kate back for the arraignment, crash into- allowing for her escape?

Answer: A pole

After being apprehended at the bus station, Kate had a discussion with the Marshal as he drove her back toward Iowa to face court for her crime. The Marshal questioned Kate's reasoning for killing Wayne now, and was convinced that he had her "figured out". Suddenly a figure stood ahead on the rainy road and the car veered into a light pole, knocking the Marshal unconscious. (Several camera angles show electrical wires overhead.) Kate used the opportunity to free herself from the handcuffs (EXACTLY as she had done on the plane) and escaped-- but not before seeing the black horse trot off the road. It seemed that fate, and the mysterious horse, had set Kate free.
However, when looking upon Kate's time line of crimes, one must begin to question if fate had been set to make Kate free from the beginning. Examine the sequence of events known at this point:
While being transported back to Iowa after becoming a prisoner, Kate made an escape from the handcuffs in the same way she had done on the plane.
She then most likely spent quite awhile on the run, using false aliases and disguises, until returning to see her ill mother at the hospital and reuniting with her childhood love, Tom. After being discovered, Kate managed to outrun the police and escape (though the second car crash was fatal for Tom).
Kate then ended up in New Mexico and robbed a bank under the alias "Maggie" in order to retrieve Tom's toy airplane from safety deposit box 815, and shot her companion Jason and the two other robbers in the process.
Kate then made her way to Australia and began farm work for Ray Mullen under the alias "Annie", until he turned her in for $23,000. Kate narrowly escaped that car crash, and would likely have evaded arrest had she not saved Ray's life.
Once again in the Marshall's management, Kate was being escorted back to the U.S. on Flight 815. She escaped during the crash, and found freedom once again on the island.
Perhaps all along she was meant to escape, as signified by the reappearance of the horse (which had aided in her first getaway).
10. Which survivor from Flight 815 is seen in Kate's flashback (in which she visits her real father, Sam, at the recruiting office)?

Answer: Sayid

In Kate's final flashback, before taking off on the run again, she is seen visiting her father Sam in a military recruiting office.
Recall that Kate had mentioned her father being in the military to Jack in a previous episode, in which they were hunting and Kate explained how she acquired tracking skills.
However, it is learned that Kate had discovered that Wayne, not Sam, was her real father after she received photos of Sam in Korea (hmm) four months before she was born.
Sam admitted to Kate that he had never told her because he wanted her to kill Wayne in revenge for Diane not allowing him to take his daughter with him.
Besides Sam's connection to Korea, Sayid and Hurley also had military connections, and a twenty-year-old U.S. Military knife was found in the pocket of an "Other".
Most intriguing, though: Look closely at the television in the office when Kate enters, and Sam is still on the phone. (Sayid is seen on the screen being escorted by American military officers.) Similarly, Hurley was seen on a television screen in the house of a man in Korea whom Jin was sent to assault.

Meanwhile in the jungle, Hurley finds Jack chopping wood (with the red axe that has been around as long as the survivors) and believes Jack is doing so because he is mad at Sawyer. Despite Jack's response, Hurley is probably correct in presuming that Jack is using "transference" to redirect his resentment of Kate's relationship with Sawyer. We are thus reminded that Hurley spent time in a mental hospital (in which he met Lenny and became acquainted with the numbers), the reason for which still unknown.
11. Mr. Eko tells Locke, "Don't mistake ___________ for __________."

Answer: coincidence fate

In this statement, Mr. Eko clearly represents the second party on the same philosophical plane as Locke.
As they work to meticulously replace the missing splice of film, Locke ponders the situation. It seemed that someone had made the film, someone had removed a piece, and through two parts of the plane crashing on opposite sides of the island the pieces were brought back together. Locke asks, "What are the odds?"
Mr. Eko replies, "Don't mistake coincidence for fate."
12. Kate attempts to connect with the ghost of Wayne (through Sawyer) and reveals the true reason she killed him. What was it?

Answer: Wayne was "a part" of her

In the hatch, Kate returns to Sawyer's bedside and attempts to speak to Wayne through him. In her confession Kate admits that she killed him because she hated that he was a part of her (as her father) and also confides that she has feelings for Sawyer.
At this point Sawyer awakens, no longer containing the spirit of "Wayne" (if that had in fact been the case). Sawyer is in awe to realize that he is in a bunk bed and believes they have been rescued.
Kate helps Sawyer exit the hatch and return to the jungle, much to Sawyer's dismay. After exchanging friendly words, Kate sees the black horse once again-- and Sawyer does too. Kate approaches the horse, which nuzzles her before vanishing back into the jungle.
The black stallion will likely not be seen again, but symbolizes a new freedom for Kate.
Recall that in previous episodes other survivors have encountered animals with which they seem to connect as well. Locke equated Charlie's freedom from his addiction to the release of a moth from it's cocoon; Sawyer had a bizarre connection with a boar that terrorized him, which Locke related to a personal anecdote of a dog that seemed to assimilate with the death of his sister; and of course Vincent seems at times to correlate with the paranormal as much as Walt and his special "powers".
The return of the stallion-- and proof that the creature not only "recognized" Kate but was no illusion-- sustains that other "impossible" events are real as well. (The whispers? Jack's father and the empty coffin?)
13. Jack is the only survivor to interact with the elusive Ana Lucía in this episode.

Answer: False

Mr. Eko had been seen speaking to Ana just before Shannon's funeral, at which point Ana said she would "not be able to make it". She remained alone for the majority of the episode, still separated from the group due to the prior incident, and was crafting yet another walking stick/spear. At the end of the episode Jack joins Ana on the beach with the drinks they did not have on the plane (tequila and tonic, minus the tonic).

This of course related back to Jack's first encounter with Ana at the bar in the Sydney airport. Perhaps a new connection will be formed between them on the island, as Jack's recent confrontation with Kate did not end so well. (And she seems to have taken up a greater interest in Sawyer.)
14. After successfully replacing a missing splice in the "Dharma" film, Locke and Mr. Eko learned that Dr. Candle had warned that using the computer for communication "could ____________ another incident."

Answer: lead to

When the reparation is complete, the new film fills the gap of the fourth splice in the original footage (though three other crucial splices remain). In the excerpt, Dr. Candle discloses that the computer's only function is to be used for entering the code, and acknowledges the "isolation" associated with the project may tempt one to use it for communication to the "outside world", which is strictly forbidden. Dr. Candle warns that using the computer for the purpose of communication could "lead to another incident". Therefore communication may not directly cause an "incident", but result in another event which would proceed to incite the "incident".
This information creates new mystery surrounding the "incident" responsible for the necessity of a code to be entered, and the fact that there are more remaining splices indicates there may be more stations on the island. (Perhaps Desmond's and the Bible location are only two of the six, leaving four more and further answers to be found.)
The fact that the computer allows for communication may also hint that Desmond could also possibly have used it for communication, and even made contact as well. Dr. Candle's reference to all not contained in the station (or the island?) as the "outside world" gives new lead to the seclusion involved with the experiment as well.
15. While Mr. Eko and Locke work to repair the film, Michael continues to explore the connections and hard drive of the computer system. An odd ringing sounds from the timer just before a message appears on the monitor. At what time does the timer freeze?

Answer: 51:00

Just as Mr. Eko and Locke learn from the missing film that the use of the computer for communication was forbidden by the Dharma project, Michael hears an abnormal beeping begin while examining the computer hardware. After glancing at the timer, which has apparently stood still at exactly 51:00, the beeping sound continues and Michael looks back at the monitor.
There is a message.
After slight hesitation, Michael types a response beside the blinking cursor. The fifth line, appearing after a brief pause, leaves Michael astounded. It reads, "Dad?" It seems that someone-- supposedly Walt-- had been allowed to breach the system and make communication. The consequences of not only the prohibited use of the computer, but also the reinstalled belief that Walt was alive and reaching out to Michael will cause new concerns for the survivors.
Following the many ramifications already bestowed upon the survivors after unraveling the mysterious qualities about the island, it may perhaps be recognized that some of the island's secrets are better left unopened.
