When the cops raided Mostow's apartment to arrest him, they found the bloody Exacto knife under his bed.

Scully was reading his file and saw that he'd been accused of the serial murder of seven men, and Mulder quipped, "And all you thought they produced were great hockey players."

After a disturbing dream, Mulder went back to Mostow's to look around. He saw the cat lapping up some blood, and followed it to find an arm lying on the floor behind some furniture. It looked like it had been ripped out at the shoulder!

It seemed Mulder might have been guilty, but it turned out to be Patterson, whose obsession with the case for the previous three years had resulted in him taking over the killer's crimes after Mostow was apprehended.
