It seemed he was having a heart attack and Lucy screamed as she looked on helplessly.

Outside the cabin, Mulder found the poppet with nails in the eyes. He pulled the nails out, effectively restoring Scully's eyesight, so she was able to grab her gun and shoot Peattie before he had killed Dr. Wieder.
