Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first episode "Pilot", Mulder and Scully went to Oregon to investigate a series of alien abductions, then went back there for a similar case at the end of the 7th season in "Requiem". In which season was Mulder abducted?

Answer: 7th season

The original episode involved teenagers being abducted, but not Mulder. Mulder was abducted at the end of the 7th season as Skinner watched, and Scully was in the hospital learning that she was pregnant. Scully was abducted in the 2nd season, in a plot move that was written into the story because Gillian Anderson was on maternity leave.
2. A memorable bad guy from the first season was Eugene Tooms, who appeared in 2 episodes. When Mulder and Scully had their final confrontation with him, how did he die?

Answer: Crushed to death

The character appeared in the episodes "Squeeze" and "Tooms". Tooms had the unique ability to stretch his body to fit through very narrow places, and based on old records, had been alive for at least 100 years. He would kill people for their livers periodically to eat as part of his rejuvination process. Mulder arrested him at the end of the first episode trying to kill Scully, but a doctor who couldn't belive he was really dangerous had him freed into his care, only to have Tooms kill him to supply the last liver he needed.

The building where he'd lived for 100 years had been replaced by a shopping mall, so he hid inside an escalator shaft to hibernate. While chasing Mulder through the shaft, Scully activated the escalator just after Mulder got out, and Tooms was crushed by the gears.
3. In the 2nd season episode "Die Hand Die Verletzt", a school teacher named Mrs. Paddock killed several people. Who was she apparently acting on behalf of?

Answer: The Devil

Based on the abilities that Mrs. Paddock demonstrated, she may have actually been the devil, but that topic never came up during the episode. The local school board was made up of a group of devil worshipers who had strayed from their faith. Mrs. Paddock started by killing their children, then killed off the board members as well.

In the process, she saved both Mulder and Scully from being killed as part of a ritual sacrifice. She then disappeared, but left a note for Mulder and Scully saying that it had been nice working with them.
4. Here's a question not specifically about the show. Which Fox Sports personality did a promo where he talked about wanting to meet Scully?

Answer: Keith Olberman

Olberman was hired away from ESPN by Fox, and in a promo he made trumpeting the fact that he'd changed employers, he explained that he hadn't moved because of money or fame, held up a photo of Gillian Anderson, and said that it was because he wanted to meet Scully.

As the promo ended, the "X-Files" theme music started playing. Gillian Anderson has been referred to as "The thinking man's babe" in several articles, since she played a very intelligent character and is of course quite attractive as well.
5. There were several episodes over the years that paid homage to old TV shows. Which of the following series was not honored by a reference to it during an episode?

Answer: "Fantasy Island"

They didn't do anything with Mr. Rourke or Tattoo in an episode. In the dark and twisted 4th season episode "Home", the sheriff was named Andy Taylor and the deputy was Barney, just like their counterparts in "The Andy Griffith Show". In the 6th season episode "Arcadia", Mulder and Scully go undercover using the names Rob and Laura Petrie, just like the main characters on "The Dick Van Dyke Show".

In the 9th season episode "Sunshine Days", which was also the final regular episode, the agents came across a man who used his telekenetic powers to recreate the Brady family and home, complete with Alice.

They also did the episode "X-Cops" in the 7th season, where the police working the same case as Mulder and Scully were being filmed for an episode of "Cops".
6. In the episode "Monday", Mulder and Scully are unaware that they keep repeating a day over and over because they died during a botched bank robbery. Mulder was depositing his paycheck at the bank to keep a check he'd written for what from bouncing?

Answer: Apartment damage

Mulder's waterbed had sprung a leak that morning, and he'd had to write a check to cover the damage to the apartment. He'd rush to the bank to deposit his paycheck and get caught in a bank robbery. Scully would walk in a few minutes later, pull out her gun, and the robber would panic and shoot Mulder.

He'd then realize that he had no way out, and detonate the dynamite that was strapped to his body, killing everyone. The next day, the cycle would repeat. His girlfriend was the only one who realized what was going on, but couldn't change things enough to prevent it from happening again and again.

She finally comes into the bank with Scully, is hit by the bullet meant for Mulder, and this time, her boyfriend just gives up. The next day finally occurs.
7. What was "Thor's Hammer", as revealed in the episode "Triangle"?

Answer: A scientist

"Thor's Hammer" was the code name for an atomic scientist on board a liner that disappeared in 1939 while in the Bermuda Triangle. Mulder ended up on the ship trying to escape the Nazis in 1939 with look-alike versions of all the characters from the show including Scully, while the real Scully and The Lone Gunmen were on the deserted ship looking for him in the current day.

When Mulder jumped off the ship and back into the 1990's, the only proof he had that his story was true was the bruise where the Scully look-alike had slapped him after he kissed her.

It's a fun episode that includes "X-Files" music with a big band beat, the Skinner look-alike as a German officer who helps save Mulder, and Scully and her double passing the same place on the ship at the same moment in different times, and seeming to sense each other's presence.
8. Before Agent John Doggett joined the FBI, he worked for what big city police department?

Answer: New York

Doggett also served in the Marine Corps prior to becoming a detective in the NYPD.
9. In the episode "Closure", Mulder finally learned what happened to his sister Samantha. What Air Force base had she been held on after her abduction?

Answer: April

Their father had been involved in the alien conspiracy, and his entry fee was to hand over a female member of his family for experimentation, namely Samantha. After years of testing, she'd managed to escape to a hospital, but vanished from a locked room as her captors came to get her.

She was one of the people taken by beings called Walk-ins to prevent them suffering a painful death. With the help of some of the other souls who had been taken and his dead mother, Mulder was briefly reunited with his sister, whose soul existed peacefully with the Walk-ins, and achieved closure in that part of his life.
10. Late in the 8th season, the character of Agent Leyla Harrison was introduced. She had been processing their expense reports over the years and become a fan, so she jumped at the chance to work with Doggett when Scully went on maternity leave in the episode "Alone". At the end of the episode, she asked Mulder and Scully about an event seen in the movie "Fight the Future". What did she specifically ask about?

Answer: The escape from Antarctica

In the movie, Mulder got Scully out of the alien ship just before it took off into the heavens as he watched, leaving them stuck alone in Antarctica, some distance from his sno-cat, with one coat between them, Mulder now unconcious, and Scully having just been revived from a deep freeze.

In the next scene, they've somehow gotten back home with relatively minor damage. At the end of the episode, Harrison, who had almost lost her sight fighting a monster on the case, and was heading back to accounting, asked Mulder and Scully how they got back.

As the episode came to a close, they were in one last debate over whether there was a spaceship at all, and we never got an answer. As this was the last regular episode that David Duchovney appeared in, it was a really fun way to end it, with Mulder the believer, and Scully the skeptic, in full force.
