Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This long-awaited 2016 release for the PS4 sees a boy forming a friendship with a creature called Trico.

Answer: The Last Guardian

With the acclaim of "Ico" and "Shadow of the Colossus" to live up to, "The Last Guardian" was originally a Team Ico project later completed by SIE Japan Studio. With director Fumito Ueda at the helm, this game was in development for nearly a decade, originally due for release on the PS3 before shifting across to its successor.

The game centres on a young boy (as is typical of the previous two games), who encounters a strange bird-like, cat-like creature who he calls Trico. Despite not reaching the same levels of acclaim as its forebears, "The Last Guardian" nonetheless enjoyed success at the 2016 DICE Awards and the British Academy Games Awards.
2. Set on a island, this third-in-its-series explosive adventure from Avalanche Studios released in December 2015.

Answer: Just Cause 3

Trading the island dictatorship of Panau in "Just Cause 2" for the island dictatorship of Medici in "Just Cause 3", Rico Rodriguez returns for his third destruction-filled jaunt. Players are able to run, jump, fly, glide, sail and parachute across an open environment filled with structures just waiting to be destroyed.

Many of these include enemy bases, the destruction or takeover of which reduce enemy influence and contribute to the overall campaign to dismantle the dictatorship at the centre of the game's story. Developers Avalanche Studios supplemented the game in 2016 with post-launch downloadable content, adding new areas and missions.
3. This charming 2014 Wii U release is based on a series of mini-levels from "Super Mario 3D World".

Answer: Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

The interstitial and largely optional Captain Toad levels from "Super Mario 3D World" were surprisingly well-received, enough to warrant an entire game set around them. Rather than a large platforming level in which to collect Power Stars (a la pretty much every 3D "Mario" game), the levels of "Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker" are markedly smaller and block-like.

There's an emphasis on puzzle-solving, with our titular hero moving fairly slowly and one block at a time, meaning there's a small element of planning steps ahead in order to reach your destination.
4. The last of its series for the PS3, this "real driving simulator" set players racing in December 2013.

Answer: Gran Turismo 6

The "Gran Turismo" series has long been Sony's flagship racer, and its sixth main entry hit the shelves early on in December. With the then-recent release of the PlayStation 4, it was clear that this was to be the last "Gran Turismo" for the PlayStation 3. With improved graphics, new courses and new cars, "Gran Turismo 6" offered the video game-playing car lover a solid racing experience.
5. This Ubisoft-developed open world action game, released in North America in December 2012, is the third in its series.

Answer: Far Cry 3

Pirates, kidnapping, a remote island - it's a cracking combination for a video game. "Far Cry 3" rolls all of these into one super-fun package, as players control Jason Brody tries to rescue his friends and get off the island. Played from a first-person perspective, players can explore the island, complete missions, retake pirate outposts, hunt wild animals and more. Among other accolades, "Far Cry 3" nabbed Best Action Game at the Video Game BAFTAs, and received generally positive praise from critics and players alike.
6. 2011 saw the release of this 3DS entry in Nintendo's flagship racing series.

Answer: Mario Kart 7

Unlike its predecessors, the 3DS's "Mario Kart" game opted for a simple number "7" in the title (denoting its position in the series, akin to Windows operating systems after the release of Vista). Despite this lack of appellative creativity, "Mario Kart 7" innovated in other ways, introducing gliders and propellers, allowing tracks to include in-air and underwater sections, respectively.

The game also debuted a different sort of race - instead of completing laps around a circuit, three tracks took a "tour" approach with a single, extended drive divided into three distinct sections.

The game itself went on to see significant success, becoming among the best-selling games for the 3DS (though that's no surprise, really).
7. Released in 2010, this expansion to a highly popular MMO sees players adventuring around Azeroth once again.

Answer: World of Warcraft: Cataclysm

Following two successful expansions in "The Burning Crusade" and "Wrath of the Lich King", the MMO behemoth that is "World of Warcraft" welcomed its third expansion, "Cataclysm", in December 2010. In addition to the usual expansion fare (increased level cap, new races, new dungeons, new raids, etc etc), "Cataclysm" radically altered existing zones throughout the game due to the return of Deathwing the Destroyer.
8. Another entry in one of Nintendo's most treasured RPG series hit the Nintendo DS in December 2009.

Answer: The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks

The convoluted chronology of "The Legend of Zelda" places the events of "Spirit Tracks" after that of "The Wind Waker" (2002/03) and "Phantom Hourglass" (2007), with players joining new incarnations of Link and Zelda on another epic quest to rout the evil from the world. Set in New Hyrule, Link's task is to restore the disappearing titular Spirit Tracks, which are revealed to be responsible for keeping the demon king Malladus imprisoned.
9. This December 2008 reboot of a classic action series sees its titular character fighting through a corrupted land.

Answer: Prince of Persia

2008's "Prince of Persia" was an attempt at a second reboot for the main series (the first being "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" after Ubisoft took the reins). Opting for a open-ended, non-linear approach to game play, in contrast to the previous games, the game centres on its eponymous prince (even though it's not actually explicitly stated that he's a prince) and Princess Elika of the Ahura fighting a corrupted menace and the influence of the imprisoned god Ahriman).
10. December 2007 featured the PlayStation 3 release of this collection of Valve games, including "Team Fortress 2" and "Portal".

Answer: The Orange Box

While PC and Xbox 360 players got to mess around with "The Orange Box" games from October 2007, PS3 players weren't able to join the fun for another two months. "The Orange Box" is a collection of five games by industry juggernaut Valve - "Half-Life 2", "Half-Life 2: Episode One", "Half-Life 2: Episode Two", "Team Fortress 2" and "Portal".

While the "Half-Life" games received the kudos they deserved, the standout game from the collection had to be "Portal", a dizzying action puzzle game that puts players in control of a mute test subject in a vast testing facility overseen by an artificial intelligence.
