Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the end of each Episode, the player will be told how long it took them to complete the area, and their time will be compared to a "Par" time. How did the development team determine how long the "Par" time should be?

Answer: An executive creator's time to complete the level

John Romero played through the game himself, rounded up or down how long it took him to finish various levels, then donned the finished product the "par" for the level. The idea behind this was to challenge the player to finish the area faster than Romero himself. Little did he know just how profound an effect it would have, giving birth to an entire community dedicated to heavily optimized speedrunning.
2. What is the first weapon Doomguy can pick up at the beginning of the game?

Answer: Shotgun

Doomguy will begin the game with a pistol, and the shotgun presents itself to him very early in the Hangar map. Generally, the shotgun will be the first weapon the player picks up at the beginning of each Mission.
3. At the end of the first Mission, the player will encounter their first boss battle. Who is the boss of the first Mission?

Answer: Two Barons of Hell

Upon entering the star shaped battle arena, the two Barons of Hell will emerge from two pillars near the middle of the area. They deal a ton of damage with their acid splash attacks and are pretty tanky, so strafing around them to dodge and simultaneously keep fire on them is recommended.
4. Upon defeating the first Mission's boss and reaching the end of the area, what will happen?

Answer: Doomguy will be killed

After slaying the Barons of Hell, the roof of the battlefield will be removed as the platform the player stands on rises, revealing a large teleportation platform they must step on to end the level. Upon stepping on it, Doomguy will be spawned into a dark room with an endless amount of enemies in it, assortments of demons beyond what the eye can see.

This fight is not winnable and will result in Doomguy dying. This is the catalyst for the second mission, as Doomguy will die and get sent to Hell, where the gameplay will pick up.
5. The second mission begins from within the depths of Hell, with one clear goal - escape and return Doomguy to his home planet, Earth. However, where exactly in Hell is this mission based in?

Answer: Deimos Moon base

The idea here is to escape the Deimos Moon base. This is done the only way Doomguy knows how- locking, loading, and blasting his way through anything that dares stand in his way.
6. One of the most iconic fights in franchise history takes place as the end of the second Mission is reached. Who is the boss fight here?

Answer: The Cyberdemon

The Cyberdemon is a huge, buff Demon with a fully automatic rocket launcher for an arm. Rockets fired from it come in steady, unending supply and will deal tons of damage should they connect. Fortunately, Doomguy has plenty of firepower to retaliate with. Unless facing Cyberdemon on Ultra Violent or Nightmare difficulty, this fight is a simple one-on-one showdown in a wide open battlefield; it is the simple, sheer awesomeness of the fight that likely makes it so memorable, weaving in and out of Cyberdemon attacks and returning fire.
7. The last boss fight of the game comes in the third mission, and is fittingly quite challenging. Who is the boss here?

Answer: Spider Mastermind

The Spider Mastermind isn't quite as tanky as the Cyberdemon, but it is sure a lot more accurate of a shot with its built in fully automatic shotgun. It is capable of hitting Doomguy very consistently from quite a far range. Approaching it with rockets is also quite risky, as it could shoot down the rocket right in Doomguy's face, causing him to take a lot of damage. Thus, the fight encourages the player to take it up close and personal to try and win the game.
8. This game actually runs on a very low amount of data, less than one gigabyte. As a result, it can be run on a comically high number of random devices, not even restricted to actual gaming consoles and/or PCs. Which of the following is an example of a non-gaming device that can be used to run this game on?

Answer: A pregnancy test

In the year 2019, the incredibly popular "DOOM" speedrunner Karl Jobst created a YouTube video where he demonstrated the sheer amounts of ridiculous items that could run "DOOM" on. In addition to a pregnancy test, he pointed out and proved that the game could be run off of a calculator powered entirely by potatoes and a watch.

In his own words, the question of "Can this run "DOOM" is just about always answered with a yes, to the point of achieving meme worthy status.
9. Being a game from the 20th century, "DOOM" certainly has its fair share of bugs. One of them, dubbed the 'Void glitch', causes Doomguy to actually end up leaving the playable area of a given map and being completely out of bounds. This might seem like a good idea to complete areas faster and easier, but alas it is not. Why is this?

Answer: Most areas are inescapable when out of bounds

Unfortunately, the nail in the coffin for the Void glitch is the fact that Doomguy cannot interact with anything at all once he has left the playable area. Returning to the playable area itself is also not possible, forcing the player to restart the entire level right from the start.
10. "DOOM" has a rich speedrunning history, with thousands of dedicated gamers converging to finish various levels or even the whole entire game as quickly as possible. Which map of the following is the shortest, and thereby garnishes the fastest speed run times?

Answer: Hangar

The Par time set for Hangar, the first map of the game, is 30 seconds. This is by far the lowest Par time of any area in the game. Fittingly, the world record for this map is just a few milliseconds less than nine seconds. It has been determined that it is humanly impossible to run it any faster than this, so it is no surprise that this world record is, not counting milliseconds, shared by dozens of players and will never be broken ever again.
11. As far as speedrunning goes, the Nightmare difficulty is clearly the most exhilarating albeit unbelievably difficult to speedrun. The difficulty has ended up being a barrier to the majority of the player base. In fact, until 2020, there were no documented Nightmare difficulty speed runs for one of the game's boss fights on Nightmare difficulty. What boss fight was this?

Answer: Cyberdemon

In December of 2020, the player AndrewB73 set the lone world record speedrun for the Cyberdemon boss fight on Nightmare difficulty in the Unity port version, slaying him in a little less than two minutes and thirty seconds. To give an idea of how much harder this is to do on the Nightmare difficulty mode, the world record for this fight on the game's easiest mode has consistently been under forty seconds for the last twenty years.

It's no wonder why Nightmare difficulty runs are so uncommon!
12. The community of "DOOM" games is rich of speedrunning, but it has unfortunately been prone to cheating as well. Once the game released in 1993, achievements began to get completed at alarming rates. However, the most arduous challenge - a full-game, Nightmare difficulty, no save/no death play through had yet to be completed. A player by the moniker "Steffan" claimed to have done it two years later, in May of 1995. Was this run cheated?

Answer: Yes

Steffan was found to have used slow motion gaming to give himself an unfair advantage. Though extremely thorough analysis, it was also found that he had been utilizing the save/reload function, which is literally one of the biggest no-nos of a no death/no save run through of the game. Fortunately, the first legitimate, uncheated run would come less than a year later, helping the community to get the bad taste out of their mouths.
13. One hidden move option Doomguy has that the game never directly tells the player about encompasses the player essentially moving sideways in a sprint and moving faster than a typical sprint would. What is this movement technique called?

Answer: Strafing

Strafing is an essential speedrun skill, as it lets the player milk every second that they can out of traveling through the map as quickly as possible. It is most prominently featured on the Hangar map, where a player can basically strafe from start all the way to finish, and complete it in around eight seconds.
14. In the realm of complex "DOOM" mechanics, what is an SR50?

Answer: Strafe right, value of 50

This is the fastest speed possible for Doomguy to strafe at. It is an extremely complex motion that requires very precise handling of the keyboard/controller, and is not possible on all ports of the game.
15. In some cases, namely when speedrunning the Hangar map, getting attacked by an enemy can actually be a good thing sometimes. Why is this?

Answer: It can briefly make Doomguy move faster

If hit in just the right direction from just the right angle, getting hit can cause Doomguy to mildly propel forward, letting him move a teeny bit faster. This art is known as "damage boosting" and was used to capture an eight second run on Hangar.
