Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following cheat codes has its own game named after it?

Answer: idspispopd

All "Doom" cheat codes start with "id" for id Software. Spispopd stands for "Smashing Pumpkins into Small Piles of Putrid Debris." This is a reference back to a memo asking for future games to have longer titles than simply "Doom". This may also be a metaphor for killing Cacodemons and was used in the first "Doom" novel.

The game "Smashing Pumpkins into Small Piles of Putrid Debris" was produced by Jamul software shortly after.
2. The first secret level in "Doom II" takes place in what looks like an older game created by id Software. What is this game?

Answer: Wolfenstein

"Wolfenstein" was id Software's first big success. It was also the first first-person shooter game, as we know them today. This level in "Doom" is extremely similar to a level in "Wolfenstein" and even includes Nazi enemies.
3. The super secret level also includes a reference to an older id Software game as well. This is hinted at in the message just before you enter the level. Which part of the message foreshadows what is to come?

Answer: "You'd better blaze through this one!"

"Congratulations..." doesn't really mean much and the other two are actually from different levels. This quote however hints that you are going to have to face Billy BLAZE and kill him. He is also known as Commander Keen and stars in the game series titled after him.
4. Who appears in the ending picture of the "Ultimate Doom?"

Answer: Daisy

Who could forget the ending of "Doom"? The original version ends with the protagonist's pet bunny, Daisy, on a stick. The ending of "Ultimate Doom" shows a picture of the protagonist leaving with what is left of Daisy. The list of all monsters appears in "Doom II".
5. In the last level of "Doom II", you are forced to face the Icon of Sin. This demon spitting monster can only be killed by having three rockets launched into his exposed "brain." This, however, is actually just a visual wall in front of a person's head. Whose head is this and who are you actually shooting at?

Answer: John Romero

John Romero was one of the lead designers of the game. He actually speaks at the beginning of the level. The message spoken is John Romero saying, "To win the game, you must kill me, John Romero" backwards.
6. Which map in "TNT: Evilution" is actually broken? It is missing a yellow key card which is required to exit the level, making it basically impossible to pass the level normally.

Answer: Pharaoh

This can be easily fixed on the computer by using the idkfa cheat, which endows you with all the keys. There are also other ways to get around it as well as fixed files that can be downloaded to correct the error.
7. One of the hardest secrets in the original "Doom" game to figure out is the secret that leads to the secret level, Warrens, in the third episode, Inferno. How is this secret reached?

Answer: By rocket launching yourself off a ledge

This can be reached from the level Mt. Erebus. Once you get to the ledge where you can jump to a chainsaw, go around the building on the small ledge. This will lead you to a walled area that isn't quite close enough to jump to. You must turn around, run backwards, and shoot a rocket into the wall to blow yourself into it.

There is then a teleporter there that leads you to the secret level.
8. Which of the following levels includes a secret room dedicated to a band?

Answer: Hell Beneath

This is E4M1 from the "Ultimate Doom". This secret is found in the red-key room. If one of the candlesticks is pressed it will reveal a NIN (Nine Inch Nails) symbol on the floor. This can then be walked over and the walls will rise up around the player and a few barons will teleport into the room as well. Not a very beneficial secret, but cool nonetheless.
9. In Command Control (E1M4) in the first "Doom" game, there is an easter egg that was so offensive that it was removed in several later copies of the game. Supposedly this was also a homage to one of id Software's earlier games. What is this symbol?

Answer: Swastika

This, of course, is the traditional symbol of Nazi Germany and the holocaust, which is still extremely offensive today. It can be found in a blue room later on in the level. When the player gets around the room, the center lowers, revealing this symbol. This is a meant to be another reference back to Wolfenstein.
10. "Doom" weapons have become very iconic in the video game world. Id Software has actually brought most of their weapons from the "Doom" series in its successor series "Quake". Which of the following weapons is the only "Doom" weapon that hasn't returned in "Quake"?

Answer: Chainsaw

As much fun as the chainsaw was to use, it was never put as a usable weapon in "Quake". The Super Shotgun is in both "Quake 1 and 2". The Chain Gun is in both "Quake 2 and 3". The BFG 9000 has returned as the BFG 10000 in "Quake 2 and 3" as well. Many forms of all of these weapons can be seen in almost all sci-fi shooters since the "Doom" series first came out.
