Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "A missile-launching skyscraper with goat legs. 'Nuff said. Half unfeeling machine, half raging horned devil. This walking nightmare has a rocket launcher for an arm and will definitely reach out and touch you. Make sure you're loaded for bear before you take on this guy." Who is the master of the Tower of Babel?

Answer: Cyberdemon

Across the franchise's history, this large, buff demon has arguably poised the biggest threat of anything Doom Guy has ever come across. In each game, its rockets deal tons of damage, it has always had the most health of any demon in every single game it has been in up to "Eternal", and in "DOOM RPG" it had a Melee attack that always killed in one hit no matter what.

Quite the fearsome foe.
2. "Same as the Former Humans, but much meaner and tougher. These walking shotguns provide you with a few extra holes if you're not careful!" What is another way to describe Doom Guy's former superiors in the military, turned enemies?

Answer: Shotgun Guy

Consistently having just as much health as Former Humans, Shotgun Guys are similarly easy to handle individually, and only pose a threat in large numbers. They will generally die very quickly to anything other than the pistol or unarmed melee strike.
3. "Sorta like a shaved gorilla, except with horns, a big head, lots of teeth, and harder to kill. Don't get too close or they'll rip your fraggin' head off." What is the official name for these iconic pink monsters?

Answer: Demon

Colloquially known as "Pinky", these demons are only capable of attacking up close, but when they do, they hit hard. They're not the absolute tankiest, but they have noticeably more HP than Former Humans, Shotgun Guys and Imps. They are similarly threatening in big numbers.
4. "Tough as a dump truck and nearly as big, these Goliaths are the worst things on two legs since Tyrannosaurus Rex." The guardian(s) of the Phobos Anomaly are otherwise known as what?

Answer: Baron of Hell

Barons of Hell are potent fighters from both far away and up close, while also requiring significant firepower to kill. They were first featured as a mini boss in original "DOOM's" eighth mission on the first episode, as the franchise's first ever boss fight.

The development team nicknames these specific variants the "Bruiser Brothers", citing the Hammer Bros from "Super Mario" as inspiration for them.
5. "The only good thing about fatso is that he's a nice wide target. Good thing, because it takes a lot of hits to puncture him. He pumps out fireballs like there was no tomorrow." These half elephant/half demon creatures have a name. What is it?

Answer: Mancubus

First featured as a boss in the second game's MAP7, Dead Simple, Mancubus are a big threat. Despite the in game description, they are not actually terribly tanky per the standard of a boss, dying in just two rockets or about seven shots of the Super Shotgun.

They make up for this by barraging the battlefield with a near endless supply of fireballs, shot several at a time in many different directions. They must be dealt with quickly, or Doom Guy risks getting overwhelmed.
6. "They float in the air, belch ball-lightning, and boast one Hell of a big mouth. You're toast if you get too close to these monstrosities." These laughing red balls are otherwise known as what?

Answer: Cacodemon

Take the Imp, give it better mobility, stronger fireballs and more HP, and you get the Cacodemon. Fortunately, they are not at all a threat unless they are significant in numbers. But, they do deal a good sum of damage, so they should usually be prioritized unless in the presence of a bigger boss.
7. "You guess the Arachnotrons had to come from somewhere. Hi, mom. She doesn't have a plasma gun, so thank heaven for small favors. Instead, she has a super-chaingun. Crap." The ruler of Dis, capital city of Hell, is who?

Answer: Spider Mastermind

Curiously, each game in the franchise seems to change which gender the Spider Mastermind is referred to as. It flip flops from female to male in each game, right up until "DOOM 2016" when, due to story reasons, it is a female for the second game in a row, and in "Eternal" does not have a gender label.

Whether male, female, transgender, nonbinary or Apache Helicopter, the Spider Mastermind has consistently been the hardest enemy to kill in any Doom game. Its bullets uniquely make use of a mechanic called "hit scan", which basically means that they cannot miss so long as Doom Guy is in the creature's line of sight, regardless of how far away he is. This makes killing the creature and its massive HP stat - second only to the cyberdemon - no small feat.
8. "Slightly easier to kill than our friend the Baron, but appear in larger numbers." These dark colored versions of the Barons of Hell are known as what?

Answer: Hell Knight

Consistently, Hell Knights have functioned as Barons of Hell, with the only important exception of having half the HP of Barons of Hell. Despite the in-game description, the most they ever show up in with through "Eternal" regards to numbers is four in "DOOM II".
9. "What a name. And what a guy. Killing him is almost as bad as letting him live." This annoyingly dangerous floating Beast is known as what?

Answer: Pain Elemental

Pain Elementals are incapable of actually dealing damage, but what they do is summon an endless amount of Lost Souls to do the dirty work for them. Until killed, they will flood the field with these flaming skulls.
10. ".oremoR nhoJ ,em llik tsum uoy, emag eht niw oT" Which major demon utters this eternally iconic liner?

Answer: Icon of Sin

The Icon of Sin is the final boss of both "DOOM II" and "DOOM Eternal." It doesn't have much health, but it can only be damaged by attacking its open, exposed brain. The demon itself is a towering twenty feet tall, summons an endless army of demons to fight with it, and in "DOOM II," can only be damaged by the rocket launcher.

The in game description, when read backwards, reads "To win the game, you must kill me, John Romero." Romero was an exceutive developer for a long time with the franchise, and this liner was added into the game right before "DOOM II" released. According to Romero in an interview conducted by IGN in late 2013, right beyond the Icon of Sin's brain, he one day discovered an eight bit design of himself had been added, without anyone consulting him about it, presumably as a harmless prank. In response, he had this voicebyte added to the game without letting anyone know, as a counter prank of sorts.
