Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I know... 'Someone' has to sneak into South Figaro and slow the Empire down, right?" Who said it?

Answer: Locke

Scene: The Returners' Hideout. Shortly before the split-party junction.

Locke Cole, being a thie... ahem... Treasure Hunter, gets his moment in the spotlight by splitting from the group to infiltrate South Figaro, where the Empire has declared Martial Law. This would allow, according to Banon, enough time for the rest of the group, including Terra, to get back to Narshe. Locke heads back to South Figaro and has a "Metal Gear Solid" moment for about thirty minutes, sneaking around and steali... er... 'finding' various items.

Just exactly how his actions "slow the Empire down" though, is never explained.
2. "Think a 'bear' like me could help you in your fight?" Who said it?

Answer: Sabin

Scene: Mt. Kolbs, heading to the Returners' Hideout.

Though not quite "Street Fighter" caliber, the duel between Sabin and Vargas is actually pretty fun in terms of gameplay and story. Sabin does indeed prove himself quite the bear as the game progresses- I would guess that his blitz 'Bum Rush' is used more than any other move by most players, second only to Gogo's mimicking of Sabin's blitzing.
3. "Let me protect you for once... Maybe now you'll believe me..." Who said it?

Answer: Celes

Scene: Magitek Research facility, Esper holding room.

Because he's a certified Tragic Hero, Locke feels that he has to protect every lady he meets. Being in a group of souped-up magical fighters who tend to be stronger than he is, however, he comes across a little less macho than intended. His heart's in the right place, though.

Still, Celes is willing to trust him and show her appreciation for his loyalty by performing the most target-specific Teleport spell in video game history. (How did half of the people in the room get teleported away and not the other half?)
4. "What a fuddy duddy..." Who said it?

Answer: Relm

Scene: Strago's house, Thamasa, the next day after rescuing Relm from the burning house.

At the time of creating this quiz, it will have been about 16 years since the first time I played this game--and I still think Relm is my favorite character. Not particularly because of her battle mechanics, but her characterization. At times, she shows more maturity than the rest of the group, while still showing a childlike innocence to the world. Often times, her comments are blunt and to the point, but are enough to talk sense into the others.

Indeed, the group can be full of fuddy-duddies sometimes.
5. "You sound like chapters from a self-help booklet!" Who said it?

Answer: Kefka

Scene: Right before the final battle.

There will always be debate as to who the greatest villain in the "Final Fantasy" series was, but those discussions will always narrow down to two: Kefka and Sephiroth. Sure, Sephiroth (from "Final Fantasy VII") murders the main character's love interest. But don't forget, Kefka is still the only Big Bad that has actually succeeded in destroying the world. (Note: Parallel Universes, moons, etc, are not 'The World')

While the artwork for Kefka makes him seem like a tragic clown, his humorous bon mots and lunatic dialog would probably be another reason my vote goes for him.
6. "The Reaper is always just a step behind me." Who said it?

Answer: Shadow

Scene: Hiring Shadow at the beginning of Sabin's story (at the party junction)

Everyone loves Shadow. He's mysterious and quiet and deadly and, c'mon, he sics his dog on the enemies, who often time will massacre them. He's got a really interesting back story, too, though you better remember how to get him in the second half of the game if you want to hear it all. (Patience is a virtue, after all).

Ironically, given that statement, he's the only playable character that is gone forever if the player doesn't get the events just right before the end of the world.
7. "If it's heads, you win. We'll choose whichever path we want, without any regrets." Who said it?

Answer: Edgar

Scene: The flashback at Figaro Castle, when Sabin returns.

Most of the music in "Final Fantasy VI" are character themes or location themes. Very few music pieces are event-related. The song that plays during this dialog is literally called "The Coin Song", and it's instantly recognizable as such.

Edgar's character comes across as slightly annoying when he first joins your party. Once you start looking at his back story, such as this scene, where you find out he gives up his own freedom in life in order to allow Sabin to keep his, you really start to feel more for him as a person. (In case you're wondering, the coin has heads on both sides.)
8. "I only know we're here... Maybe we're the only people left alive..." Who said it?

Answer: Cid

Scene: The Shack on the Island at the start of the second half of the game.

For some who didn't use Celes much during the first half of the game, it may be a surprise, or perhaps even a little irritating, to be forced to use her through most of the second half. She is a bit... frigid in the first half. However, the scene with her and Cid alone together, feeling they are the whole of society left remaining, is humanizing to her. One of the two most emotional moments in the game takes place here if Cid doesn't survive. (That's all up to the player's fishing skills.)

By the way, why is Cid still wearing his lab coat a year later?
9. "Today I set your heart free. You must learn to love yourself again." Who said it?

Answer: Rachel

Scene: Kohnlingen, after the Phoenix Cave.

In a game with fourteen playable characters, you would think the most emotional scene in the game would be between two of them, rather than one and a separate person that you see only moments in the game. Still, the entire motivation for why Locke does what he does (and is who he is) can all be summed up in Rachel.

Not only is Locke's character given more depth, but to actually see him accomplish what he basically made his life's work instills a little extra determination for him to fight the big evil in the world. Not to mention, after this scene, the player gets a very important Esper. You know, the one that has that spell. You know what I'm talking about.
10. "W...wait! I'm a GENERAL, not some opera floozy!" Who said it?

Answer: Celes

Scene: Opera House, prior to the performance of "The Dream Oath".

If there is any memory that remains after playing this game, it's the opera. The fact that music composer Nobuo Uematsu actually wrote an entire opera within this video game is a testament to the man's greatness. There have been live performances of this opera that are absolutely amazing.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, why yes, even a military general can sing opera if put on the spot.
