Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You are deep in the bowels of a strange alien planet. You have fought a strange monster known as Kraid, only to discover him a fake. Deeper within this labyrinth, you discover the true Kraid. You fight for your life, and are victorious. Yet still the fight is not over. What's the game?

Answer: Metroid

Metroid is very similar to the 1979 film "Alien". Both are bleak, dark, and rather intense. Some of the developers have said that "Alien" was a direct inspiration to the game. "Kid Icarus" is a sister game to "Metroid", being developed by the same team and released on the same date. Metroids even make an appearance on the third world of "Kid Icarus". You must beat Kraid and Ridley in order to continue the quest to the mysterious Mother Brain.
2. You are deep in the heart of Transylvania. This is your second major trip into that accursed place. The halls are strangely silent. Once where there were enemies, now only you are here to seek out the evil count. What's the game?

Answer: Duck Tales

"DuckTales's" second-to-last boss battle is with Count Dracula Duck. He disappears and reappears. You make two major trips to Transylvania during "DuckTales" (not counting a minor trip to get the key to the African mine stage). The second stage there are no enemies present at all.
3. You have fought many mechanical nightmares. You make it to the final boss, only to discover the final boss you have been pursuing is an alien, or so it seems. What's the game?

Answer: Mega Man II

"Mega Man II" probably the most highly regarded of all the "Mega Man" titles. When you finally confront Dr. Wily at the final show down (that is, until "Mega Man III" anyway), you discover that Dr. Wily has created a holographic alien that you must battle.
4. Your father Ken has been killed by Jaquio. With elaborate cutscenes between the stages, which at that time were unprecedented, the plot of the game unfolds. Eventually you will face not only your father but Jaquio himself. What's the game?

Answer: Ninja Gaiden

"Ninja Gaiden" is famous for its cut scenes, involved plot, and brutal difficulty. In fact, if you die at any one of the three main final boss fights, you have to start all over at the beginning of Act 6. Not only is Act 6 the hardest part of the game, without a doubt they are some of the most incredibly difficult stages in video game history.
5. You are in World Six. You are ready to fight the final boss of that world - a snake with three heads that blows fire. You have fought him once before. What's the game?

Answer: Super Mario Brothers 2

It is become well known with the advent of the Internet that "Super Mario Brothers 2" was originally released as a Japan exclusive called "Doki Doki Panic". Back when this game first came out, though, we didn't know this was "Doki Doki Panic". We just knew we had to beat Wart. "Super Mario 2" also graced the first issue of "Nintendo Power", with Mario's colors famously inverted.

The snake's name is Tryclyde.
6. The realm has fallen into darkness. You have beaten back the main adversary of the realm just a few seasons ago. Now, you must prove your courage and place six crystals in six palaces across the realm, all the while dodging the now dead adversary's minions who wish to sprinkle your blood upon his ashes to bring him back to life. The final confrontation to prove your courage is with your own shadow. What's the game?

Answer: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Strangely enough, "Zelda II" takes place toward the end of the story timeline within the Zelda universe, despite being released so early. Seen as a weird diversion, even Shigeru Miyamoto has seld "Zelda II" was a mistake and that that the real sequel to "The Legend of Zelda" is "Link to the Past" (or "Triforce of the Gods", as it's known in Japan). Personally I love "Zelda II".
7. You have been victorious against many enemies. Deep in a labyrinth, you discover a giant serpent jumping into different lakes of lava. You must jump from platform to platform, all the while hitting the giant serpent on his head, which is his only vulnerability. What's the game?

Answer: Kid Icarus

The boss's name is Hewdraw and he is the guardian of the third palace. He is the third of four bosses in Kid Icarus. The final stage is a shooter and is known as Skyworld, where you must end up fighting Medusa, the queen of all evil. "Zelda II" has a very similar boss fight where you must battle a giant serpent known as Volvagia in the Japanese release and Barba in the US release. Unlike Hedraw, Barba does not jump out of the lava into different pits, nor is he only vulnerable in the head. "Castlevania III" has a similar fight as well, though again like "Zelda II" this serpent does jump completely out of the water.
8. Armed with a whip and a throwing star, you are close to the end of your quest. The Grim Reaper gives you battle. He throws several sickles at you and floats around the room, making him very, very difficult to dodge. There are six blocks, three on either side of the screen on which you can jump. Though the fight is difficult, you have no fear. You see, this is not your first encounter with the Grim Reaper. What's the game?

Answer: Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse

You actually fight the Grim Reaper three times in the NES series. Dracula's Curse, however, features the six platforms you can jump upon. After beating the Grim Reaper, then you must fight another boss, a giant skull. The Grim Reaper in the original "Castlevania" is almost as hard as Dracula himself.
9. You're in the jungle, blasting alien scum. There are bullets coming from every direction. Ultimately you must fight confront the alien masterminds intent on taking over the planet. No worries, however, for you know this secret code: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start. What's the game?

Answer: Contra

The famous Konomi code actually debuted in the 1986 game "Gradius" and has been used in a very large number of "Gradius" titles. "Contra" began life as an arcade title, and was released in the Pal region as Probotector, and in the NES release the two humans were replaced by robots.
10. You're aboard an airship. You seek a deranged child of an evil king. The evil king has stolen seven wands from seven rightful kings. The king gave his child, whose name is Iggy, one such wand. Your job is to get it back. What's the game?

Answer: Super Mario Brothers 3

I decided to end the quiz on one of the most famous games of all time. "Super Mario Brothers 3" was released in 1988 in Japan and 1990 in America. The game features heavily in the movie "The Wizard", and was also released in arcades at one time. In fact, the first time I ever played "Super Mario Brothers 3" was in an arcade.
