Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this game, you have to defend your cities against a constant stream of ballistic missiles that are raining down upon them. Some of the missiles will split into multiple missiles, so play wisely because once you run out of anti-missile ammunition, your cities are sitting ducks. What game is this?

Answer: Missile Command

The six cities in "Missile Command" were originally supposed to be the California cities of San Diego, Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, and Eureka. There was a sequel in the works called "Missile Command 2". In this game, two players would play at the same time; one would be the attacker and one would defend the cities. It was never released.
2. In this game, you are an interplanetary botanist that loves Reese's Pieces. Your goal is to find, and assemble, the three parts of your telephone so that you can phone home. What game is this?

Answer: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

For some reason, this game has been cited as being the worst video game in Atari 2600 history. Once you and E.T. find the three pieces and assemble the phone, you will go to the designated area and wait for the spaceship to pick him up. Once he have been picked up, the game resets but the three telephone pieces are in a different location.
3. This game is set in 1930s Egypt. You are a fedora-wearing, bullwhip-cracking adventurer seeking an ancient artifact. You must navigate a Cairo marketplace, a mesa, and the Temple of the Ancients, all the while avoiding snakes; because you hate snakes. What game is this?

Answer: Raiders of the Lost Ark

This game is widely accepted to be the most difficult Atari 2600 game to play. This partially comes from the fact that it's a one player game, but required the use of two joysticks. Once you navigate the in-game world and eventually find the Ark, if you're able, the game ends. Harrison Ford reportedly played the game and turned it off in the middle of playing, calling the game "ridiculous".
4. You are in the jungle and you must find thirty-two pieces of treasure in twenty minutes. It sounds easy, but there is a tunnel under the jungle and some of the passages are blocked. Also there to hinder your progress are rolling logs, quicksand, crocodiles, scorpions, and snakes. What game am I describing?

Answer: Pitfall!

"Pitfall!" is the #2 best-selling game (behind "Pac-Man") in Atari 2600 history. The in-game treasure consisted of diamond rings, bags of money, silver bars, and gold bars. If a player scored over 20,000 points in this game, they could take a picture of the screen and send it into Activision. The player would then receive a special patch commemorating the achievement.
5. In this game, you are Luke Skywalker and you must pilot your snowspeeder in a battle versus the AT-ATs. You may be able to use The Force, smart-bombs, or you could just blast them a lot. What game is this?

Answer: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

The premise of this game is that you are on the ice planet of Hoth and must defend Echo Base from the advancing AT-ATs (All-Terrain Armor Transports). The only objective of the game is to destroy the never-ending supply of enemy walkers before they reach your base. The game is over when five of your snowspeeders are destroyed or when one of the Imperial AT-ATs reach Echo Base.
6. This game, inspired by Pac-Man, features a mouse that must clear the maze by eating the cheese dots. Your character can eat bones that are scattered in the maze and turn your mouse into a dog. The main enemies are three cats that want to eat the mouse. What is this game?

Answer: Mouse Trap

The maze in "Mouse Trap" has numerous doors. The player can move the position of the doors in order to reconfigure the maze. This game differs from the arcade game in the fact that there are three mice as opposed to six in the arcade. Also, in the arcade version, there is a hawk that tries to kill the mouse, whereas there is no hawk in the Atari 2600 version.
7. In this game you are a famous naval character that is trying to pick up items that were dropped by your girlfriend. Watch out because the Sea Hag and Brutus are trying to stop you. Never fear, you can use your can of spinach to become invincible for a short time. What game is this?

Answer: Popeye

The object of "Popeye" is to collect the hearts, letters, and musical notes that have been dropped by Olive Oyl while avoiding enemies and obstacles. Wimpy and Swee'Pea are also in the game, but they are used mainly in the background.
8. In this game you have been transformed into one of three monsters (gorilla, werewolf, or dinosaur) and your mission is to destroy all of the building in the city. You won't go hungry because you can eat people, and for extra fun, you get to smash police cars, boats, and tanks, among other things. What game is this?

Answer: Rampage

This game's monsters are named Ralph (werewolf), Lizzie (dinosaur), and George (gorilla). They were originally humans that were mutated into monsters. When the monster dies during the course of gameplay, he/she is transformed back into a human.
9. You are a stick figure and have one weapon, a laser. Your objective is to enter the maze, kill the enemies, and leave the maze as quickly as possible. Oh yeah, there are robots that are shooting lasers at you, and if you run into a wall, you will die. Also, if you take too long to exit the maze, Evil Otto will come bouncing along and try to destroy you. What game is this?

Answer: Berzerk

In "Berzerk" you enter a door and are in a room full of walls. To score points, you'll shoot the robots and then exit the room. Evil Otto is a character that resembles a smiley-face on a ball and he also wants to kill you. He's indestructible, so if you see him coming, it's time for you to get going.
10. My favorite Atari 2600 game was this one where you are a prison-dressed masked bomber standing at the top of the screen dropping lots and lots of bombs. Your job, as the player, is to catch the bombs in your buckets. Which game is this?

Answer: Kaboom!

According to "Video Game Critic", "Kaboom" is "...the most fun Atari 2600 game ever". You begin with three buckets and one of your buckets disappears each time you miss a bomb. Your game is over when all three of your buckets are gone.
