The Less, The Better Trivia Quiz

The less, the better. That would certainly be the philosophy of most video game villains. But just what would games be like if there weren't any items, power-ups and the like for the hero?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Collecting items is a hallmark of the 'Banjo-Kazooie' series. In the first game, if there were no Mumbo Tokens, what wouldn't the protagonists, Banjo and Kazooie, be able to do?

Answer: Transform into various creatures

These Mumbo Tokens, small, skull-shaped, silver trinkets, are scattered across the worlds of Gruntilda's Lair, and are only used to purchase the various transformations offered by the shaman Mumbo Jumbo. In Mumbo's Mountain, handing over five tokens will result in a termite transformation; in Bubblegloop Swamp, ten tokens mean it's crocodile time; in Freezeezy Peak, fifteen tokens turns Banjo and Kazooie into a walrus; in Mad Monster Mansion, twenty tokens are needed to become a pumpkin; in Click Clock Wood, the final transformation is that of a bee, in exchange for twenty-five tokens.
2. In 'Super Mario Galaxy' (and, indeed, its sequel), colourful items known as Star Bits can be collected and used in a variety of ways. What wouldn't Mario be able to do if there were no Star Bits?

Answer: Stun enemies by shooting at them

Star Bits drop from the skies, from crates and blocks, and from slain enemies, and can be collected by simply waving the star pointer over them using the Wii Remote. This same pointer can then be used to aim, and a simple press of a button will fire off a single Star Bit at the pointer's location, be it at a goomba, a piranha plant, or even a very hungry Luma.

These hungry Lumas require a hefty sum of Star Bits, but Mario is rewarded with access to a brand new galaxy, full of even more Star Bits, coins and Power Stars.
3. Sonic, the hedgehog with a penchant for speed, collects golden rings in many of his adventures. In the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 version of 'Sonic Unleashed', what wouldn't he be able to do if there were no rings to collect in the daytime levels?

Answer: Boost whilst running

As Sonic blasts through each stage, he will, no doubt, pick up quite a few of the series' iconic golden rings. In the day stages 'Sonic Unleashed', collecting rings adds to Sonic's boost meter, which he can unleash (pardon the pun) at any time to give himself a supersonic (again, pardon) burst of speed.

As with previous games in the series, getting hit by an enemy or an environmental hazard will cause Sonic to lose the majority of rings he has in his possession. In the night stages, where Sonic transforms into a Werehog and enters into fist-to-fist combat with his foes, the rings serve a different purpose.

Instead of providing a boost, they replenish some of Sonic's health.
4. Bolts are the currency of the 'Ratchet and Clank' universe, but even more prestigious, if rarer, are Gold Bolts. In the original 'Ratchet and Clank' for the PlayStation 2, if Gold Bolts were removed entirely from the game, what wouldn't Ratchet and Clank be able to do?

Answer: Upgrade their weapons

The Gold Bolts of 'Ratchet and Clank' are usually hidden in secret locations throughout each of the many planets the heroic duo visit. They don't contribute to Ratchet's standard bolt collection, but instead are stored separately and are used to upgrade his weapons into more powerful gold weapons. Only two locations exist in the game where Ratchet can purchase these upgrades.

The first is at the Gemlik Moonbase, after defeating Captain Qwark in space combat and returning to the very end where a large tower resides.

At the top of this tower is a gold weapon room. The second location appears after completing the game, and is accessed through a teleporter near the landing pad on Novalis.
5. Palladium is amongst the most commonly used metals in 'Mass Effect 2', along with platinum and iridium. If palladium was nowhere to be found in the universe of 'Mass Effect 2', which of these would NOT be affected (ie, which of these doesn't require palladium)?

Answer: Upgrades for Shepard's assault rifle

The aforementioned metals of the 'Mass Effect 2' universe can be obtained in a variety of ways. Shepard can come across caches and containers of these metals, as well as harvest them straight from the surface of a planet. Palladium is used in heavy pistol upgrades, cybernetic upgrades (including reduced damage taken and increased health), and shield upgrades for both Shepard and the Normandy. Platinum can be used to upgrade shotguns, sniper rifles, Shepard's medical-related abilities, and general upgrades to the Normandy. Iridium is used to upgrade assault rifles, sub-machine guns, and heavy weapons.

A fourth, much rarer mineral, named element zero (or 'eezo', as it is also known as) is used to upgrade some of Shepard's biotic powers, and can also be used on some of his squad members.
6. Trapped inside Arkham City, a prison for Gotham City's meanest criminals, Bruce Wayne (or rather, Batman) earns experience for each foe he knocks out. If there wasn't any experience, what would happen?

Answer: Batman wouldn't be able to replenish his health

The combat system of 'Batman: Arkham City' doesn't rely on potions or health packs or other such items to help Batman replenish his health. Instead, Batman must take down all foes attacking him first, since the experience gained from doing this acts as a way of restoring health.

Therefore, Batman must be careful not to lose all his health during a fight, as there is no way to restore it during combat. Deft use of combos, attack chains, and counters are the key to staying on top of his opponents. Once Batman gains enough experience to take him over a certain threshold, he'll gain an experience point, which can then be used to upgrade one of his abilities or gadgets.
7. Precursor Orbs in 'Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy' can be found all over the place, but they really only have one use. If they suddenly vanished, what effect would this have on Jak and Daxter?

Answer: They wouldn't be able to obtain additional power cells

In essence, the premise of 'Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy' is simple. The eponymous duo must run around finding power cells to allow them to access further areas of the game. While it isn't necessary to collect every single Precursor Orb in the game, collecting a large portion of them can net Jak and Daxter some extra power cells, by either trading with various NPCs or using them as an offering at some mystical shrines. Once enough power cells have been collected in one region, they can be used to power up the A-Grav Zoomer, allowing the dynamic duo to traverse otherwise untraversable terrain to reach new areas with more power cells and Precursor Orbs.
8. In 'Borderlands', players explore the vast and dangerous alien world of Pandora. Should the player want to purchase healing kits, more ammunition, or ammunition storage upgrades, for instance, they would need what, to facilitate these transactions?

Answer: Cash

Yes, it's as simple as cash. Cash can be found almost anywhere on Pandora, hidden in tins, mailboxes, dustbins, scrap piles, lockers, and enemies, though the latter will need to be defeated first before the cash can be collected. Wads of cash are most common, though small statues can also be collected for more cash. Vending machines scattered across the planet allow the player to sell items from their inventory, as well as add to it, offering weapons, shields, ammunition, grenades, and health packs in exchange for cash.
9. The eponymous sands of time mentioned in 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time' serve an extremely useful purpose for the agile prince. But if this sand was to disappear from the game, what effect would this have?

Answer: The Dagger of Time would be useless

The prince wields a sword and the Dagger of Time (after he retrieves it from the depths of the castle), and uses the two to fight off hordes of sand creatures as he searches the castle for the vizier. Clouds of mystical sand can be found scattered across the castle, and the prince can absorb the power of this sand through the Dagger of Time, allowing him to rewind time and undo potentially fatal actions, such as mistiming a jump or succumbing to an advancing army of foes.

The Dagger must also be used to kill these creatures by absorbing the sand that makes them live. Without the sand, the Dagger would have no function at all, and the prince would have a pretty tough time going about his quest.
10. Souls are abundant in the world of 'Darksiders', but if the game was suddenly devoid of all yellow souls, would effect would this have on War, the protagonist?

Answer: War wouldn't be able to use his special wrath-powered attacks

Souls in 'Darksiders' can be broken down into three types, delineated by colour: blue, green and yellow. Blue souls are the currency of the game, and can be obtained by killing any foe, destroying some environmental objects, or opening hidden chests. Vulgrim sells a variety of items in exchange for blue souls, and also provides War with blue souls if he finds any ancient artifacts. Green souls are what give War more health.

Not all enemies drop green souls upon death, but health chests can be found to get War back in high spirits. Yellow souls fuel War's wrath abilities.

These abilities are more powerful than War's regular attacks, but can only be used sparingly, when he acquires more yellow souls from some fallen foes and, again, hidden chests. Wrath shards are scattered across the world, and every four shards that War finds will award him with an additional wrath slot.
