Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Super Mario 64" is the first three dimensional Mario title ever released.

Answer: False

The first three dimensional Mario platformer was actually "Mario Clash" for the Virtual Boy. However, it is largely a remake of the original "Mario Bros." title. "Mario Clash" was available in stores for a mere three months.
2. "Super Mario 64" was one of two US launch titles for the Nintendo 64. What was the second launch title?

Answer: Pilotwings 64

In Japan, there was a third launch title called "Saikyō Habu Shōgi" which is simply a board game. Miyamoto assisted the development team with "Pilot Wings 64".
3. What other game was developed in connection with "Super Mario 64"?

Answer: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Just like "Super Mario Bros." and "The Legend of Zelda", Miyamoto was developing "Super Mario 64" and "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" together. However, Nintendo famously delayed "Ocarina of Time" as they worked on the game. "Ocarina of Time" would not be released until November 1998. Both "Ocarina of Time" and "Super Mario 64" are based on the same game engine, though "Ocarina of Time" is heavily modified. Elements and original puzzles from "Ocarina of Time" were dropped from that title and showed up in "Super Mario 64" and vice-versa.

Miyamoto originally thought about making "Super Mario 64" an isometric game like "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars".
4. In the course "Bowser from the Sky", a carving of Mario appears on one of the pillars. From what previous Mario title was this Mario carving based upon?

Answer: Super Mario Bros.

Although rather poor quality, there are carvings of Mario jumping over Bowser's fireballs in the original "Super Mario Bros." This is the final stage of "Super Mario 64", and requires seventy stars to access.
5. In the U.S. version of "Super Mario 64", the painting that leads to Jolly Roger Bay is a picture of a sunken ship. What does the painting depict in the Japanese version?

Answer: A cloud of bubbles

Save for the Shindou Edition, "Super Mario 64" has a cloud of bubbles for the painting entrance. In "Super Mario 64 DS", Nintendo opted to use the original bubbles painting regardless of region.
6. Not including the 100 coin star, how many Stars are obtainable in the volcano in "Lethal Lava Land"?

Answer: Two

There are two stars in the volcano. The first is "Hot-Foot-It Into the Volcano", where you must navigate your way toward the volcano's summit, traveling across a series of platforms and poles. Mario rides some moving platforms called elevators to get the second star.

The original title for this second star is "Elevator Tour Into the Volcano". In "Super Mario 64 DS", Nintendo retitled this star to "Inside the Volcano".
7. All fifteen courses have over one hundred coins, as once you get one hundred coins you get a power star. What course contains the most coins?

Answer: Tiny-Huge Island

According to Nintendo, "Tiny-Huge Island" features the most coins with 182 present on the stage. Here is a total list of the coin count according to Nintendo. Nintendo is demonstratively wrong on some of the total coin count, as players have gotten more than Nintendo says is possible.

1 Bob-omb Battlefield 146 146
2 Whomp's Fortress 141 141
3 Jolly Roger Bay 104 104
4 Cool, Cool Mountain 154 154
5 Big Boo's Haunt 151 151
6 Hazy Maze Cave 134 139 +5
7 Lethal Lava Land 133 133
8 Shifting Sand Land 136 136
9 Dire, Dire Docks 106 106
10 Snowman's Land 125 126 +1
11 Wet-Dry World 147 152 +5
12 Tall, Tall Mountain 135 137 +2
13 Tiny-Huge Island 182 191 +9
14 Tick Tock Clock 128 128
15 Rainbow Ride 146 146
Total 2068 2090 +22

This information was used from EDP.com and Wdell.
8. What stage features a maze in which Mario must collect eight red coins to gain a power star?

Answer: Rainbow Ride

My personal favorite from "Super Mario 64", "Rainbow Ride" is the last official course of the game. To get the eight coins, you must navigate a maze. Separate from the maze, but still part of its structure, are several blue coins that you must wall jump to get access too.
9. Barring text on signs and spoken dialogue, there is only one stage in "Super Mario 64" that features English letters in the world itself. The letters are "ET". What's the level?

Answer: Shifting Sand Land

Deep in the heart of the pyramid in "Shifting Sand Land", two English words are discernible among the nonsensical hieroglyphics, and those letters are "ET". This may be a reference by Nintendo to the theory that the pyramids' constructions involved extra-terrestrial help.

Another famous piece of text is "L Is Real 2401", which also appears in "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time". Many players thought this plaque with the text "proved" Luigi was in the game somewhere deep within the recesses of the gamecode. Sadly, Luigi does NOT appear in "Super Mario 64".

This info is from Super Mario 64.com.
10. In "Super Mario 64 DS", how many new stars were introduced?

Answer: 37

In "Super Mario 64 DS", Nintendo revised the game by adding thirty seven new stars in the game, taking the total from the original 120 to 150. Nintendo replaced seven original stars with seven new stars.
