"Super Mario 64" Castle, Lobbies and Hallways Quiz

My first Mario quiz was about things outside the castle. Now, follow me inside the castle but NOT into levels. All questions will be based on the halls and lobbies inside the castle. No questions will come from levels. Good Luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When you first enter the main lobby there are lots of different doors you can choose to enter. How many of these doors have a star on them?

Answer: Six

There are a total of ten doors in this main lobby if you include the one through which you entered the castle lobby. Seven of these doors are on the ground floor and three of them are located at the top of the stairs. Four of the doors lead to rooms where you can enter a level and display a star on the door with the number of power stars Mario needs to enter that door. One shows no number and is the first level Mario can enter. Two others show a "1" and the last one shows a "3". All four of these are on the first level.

At the top of the stairs and to the right is another door with this same feature (showing a "1") that leads to a bonus level where you can use a long twisting slide. Finally, up the stairs and to the left is a double sliding door with a large star on the front that leads to the first Bowser stage.
2. When you first enter the lobby, Toad is to your immediate left. Several toads throughout the game offer you power stars just for speaking with them and these stars are considered "Castle Secret Stars." This first toad gives you a star if you speak with him.

Answer: False

This toad serves as a kind of introductory toad. He gives a brief explanation of the situation and explains a couple other things as well. He does NOT offer Mario a power star.
3. What changes in the main lobby once Mario earns his tenth power star?

Answer: A beam of sunlight streams into the lobby

Once Mario earns his tenth power star, a beam of light from the sky light or stained glass window in the ceiling or main tower streams into the lobby and hits the ground right in the middle of the room. If Mario stands in this sunlight and looks up directly into it, he is transported to a secret area where he can activate the red Wing Cap switch. He can also earn a castle secret star in this level by collecting all eight red coins and the landing on the platform.

Every door in the lobby can be opened by the time you have ten stars except for one. The door at the the top of the stairs that leads to the second floor of the castle can only be opened with a large key that is earned by defeating the second Bowser.

The carpet in the lobby is always red.

No power star is ever collected in the main lobby.
4. On the first floor, on either side of the stairs, there is a brown door that requires no star power to enter. Both doors lead to the same small lobby. This lobby contains another staircase down to another locked door. It also contains a long hallway that leads out to the patio. What creature inhabits this hallway once you have progressed part of the way through the game?

Answer: Boo

Once you progress part of the way through the game, Boo appears in this hallway. As you run down the hallway, though, Boo runs from you and passes through the wall and door at the end. Once Boo becomes visible in this hallway, the level Big Boo's Haunt is able to be accessed on the patio.
5. The castle has four floors. There is the main floor, the basement, the second floor and the third floor. Only including the main fifteen levels, which floor of the castle contains the most levels?

Answer: The main floor

The main floor includes four levels accessed from the main lobby (Ba-Bomb Battlefield, Whomp's Fortress, Jolly Roger Bay, Cool Cool Mountain) and Big Boo's Haunt located on the patio outside, for a total of five levels.

The basement contains Shifting Sand Land, Lethal Laval Land, Dire Dire Docks and Hazy Maze Cave for a total of four levels.

The second floor contains Snowman's Land, Wet-Dry World, Tall Tall Mountain and Tiny-Huge Island for a total of four levels.

The third floor contains Tick-Tock Clock and Rainbow Ride for a total of two levels.
6. What creature, found in the slightly flooded lobby of the basement, provides you with a castle secret star if you are able to catch him?

Answer: A little yellow rabbit

The rabbit, whose name is Mips (Thank you to 'kyleisalive' for that info!), runs from you quite well and only with a well timed dive or by sneaking very slowly can you catch him. Once he is caught you learn that he is in quite a hurry and has no time to argue so he gives you the star. Apparently he changes his mind about being in a hurry, though, because once you put him down, he just sits there.

In fact, you can even pick him up again and run around with him.
7. While the third floor requires seventy power stars to access, it is possible to enter the doors without all seventy stars. However, what prevents Mario from being able to actually access the floor without the required seventy stars?

Answer: The staircase never ends no matter how long you climb it

If you approach the sliding double doors with less than seventy stars, you hear Bowser deliver an evil laugh but the doors then open anyway. However, if you begin to climb the stairs that are found through the door, you never reach the top. No matter how long you run up the stairs, when you turn to go back down, the bottom is right behind you. Creepy...
8. How many coins are able to be collected in the main lobby of the first floor?

Answer: Four

There is a small platform on each side of the stairs about halfway up. Each small platform contains two coins, bringing the total for the lobby to four. Presumably, these coins are used to restore life that Mario has lost while playing one of the levels.
9. What provides light in the basement?

Answer: Torches

Torches are lit at intervals along the walls. It is possible to injure Mario if you get too close to these torches. If Mario is burned by one of these torches, he reacts the same as he does if he is burned by fire (not lava) in a level.
10. How many toadstools are in the lobby of the second floor and how many of them give you castle secret stars?

Answer: Two toadstools, one has a star

One toadstool is located under the staircase that leads to the third floor and he does NOT have a star. The second toadstool is located against the outer wall in a corner and he grants Mario a power star.
