Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The "Mass Effect" galaxy was filled with diverse alien species. Which short species was known for wearing suits to maintain a high internal pressure?

Answer: Volus

The volus were the third species to discover the Citadel in their cycle, after the asari and salarians. The volus were a mercantile species, focusing on trade and commerce rather than violence. They helped the galactic economy, and established the credit as the intergalactic currency.

Because they did not contribute to the military defense of Citadel space, they were only given an embassy instead of a seat on the Council - a decision many volus were still upset about.

The volus homeworld, Irune, had a high-pressure atmosphere. When volus left, they had to wear pressure containment suits to interact with other species in more reasonable environments.
2. Who was Shepard's mentor throughout the series, who decided to stay behind on Earth to lead the resistance against the Reapers?

Answer: Anderson

David Anderson started "Mass Effect" as a Captain, but had been promoted to Admiral by "Mass Effect 3". He was the original commanding officer of the Normandy, with Shepard as his executive officer.

At the beginning of "Mass Effect 3", Anderson defended Shepard's actions at the trial, but the Reapers attacked during the proceedings. He send Shepard away on the Normandy to unite the galaxy against the Reapers while he stayed behind to coordinate the resistance on Earth.

Through the game, Shepard could talk to Anderson in the Normandy's war room, using a quantum entanglement communication device. They would keep each other informed of new developments in their respective spheres.
3. Cerberus troopers had advanced hardware, and specialized roles. What was the name of the Cerberus sniper unit?

Answer: Nemesis

The Nemesis was the Cerberus sniper unit. They had little armour, making them difficult to hit. They carried a Raptor Sniper Rifle, but used it to fire single powerful shots, rather than a high-speed volley that the Raptor was designed for.

The Assault Trooper was the basic soldier for Cerberus, Guardians would approach Shepard with riot shields, and Phantoms were dangerous biotic and sword-wielding soldiers who could cloak themselves.
4. What was the name of the Reapers' basic trooper, and the most common Reaper enemy seen in "Mass Effect 3"?

Answer: Canibal

Cannibals were the basic foot soldiers for Cerberus. They were not as weak or fast as Husks, but were more plentiful, and had a ranged attack. If a Reaper unit was killed near them, they would all run to their downed fellow and start consuming to regenerate their health.

Brutes were highly armoured enemies with only melee attacks. Ravagers also had heavy armour, but had powerful long-range cannons. Harvesters were large flying Reaper units that would occasionally show up to attack Shepard from afar.
5. The "Mass Effect" series always had a melee attack, but in "Mass Effect 3" Shepard could use a Heavy Melee to do extra damage with a longer wind-up time. What device allowed Shepard to perform a Heavy Melee?

Answer: Omni-Blade

The omni-blade was heavily featured in promotional material for "Mass Effect 3", but only four of the six classes actually used it. The omni-blade was manufactured at the time of use, and then dissolved. The Vanguard and Adept both used biotically charged heavy melees, rather than their omni-blades. All classes used an omni-blade when fighting Kai Leng on the Cerberus Headquarters at the end of the game.

In the multiplayer component, the variety of heavy melees expanded further to include batarian gauntlets, krogan battle hammers, and swords.
6. Despite being relative newcomers in the galaxy, the humans already had a seat on the Citadel Council. Who was the human councillor in "Mass Effect 3"?

Answer: Udina

Donnel Udina was a staple character in the "Mass Effect" series. In fact, he spoke the very first line in the trilogy, saying, "Well, what about Shepard?"

Udina was the human ambassador to the Citadel. He was concerned with advancing humanity's standing in the galaxy, and often felt the military disrupted his carefully laid plans. He cared more for appearances than the facts.

In "Mass Effect 3", humanity had been given a seat on the Council, and Udina made a Councillor. At first he seemed more reasonable than previous installments, but became frustrated with the lack of help for Earth. He cut a deal with Cerberus so he could get emergency powers and force the Council to help Earth, but his plan was discovered, and he was killed.

Anita Goyle was the human Councillor before Udina, Captain Bailey was a human C-Sec officer, and Jack Harper was the Illusive Man's real name.
7. In "Mass Effect 3", like the previous instalments, players could play as one of six different classes. Which of the six classes focused on both combat and biotic abilities, and was known for using their shotgun in close-range, frenetic fights?

Answer: Vanguard

The Vanguard was the combat-biotics hybrid class. They were designed to run into the middle of a fight, using biotics to boost their defenses and throw enemies about while blasting everything with their shotgun.

In "Mass Effect 2", they gained their signature Charge ability, with which they could leap across the battlefield and slam into their enemies. "Mass Effect 3" continued this trend by adding Nova, which let Vanguards stun all enemies in their vicinity.
8. Mordin (or Padok) was creating a cure for the Genophage, using willing krogran females as test subjects. By the time Shepard arrived, only one krogan female from the experiments was still alive. She refused to tell anyone her name, so what name did Mordin use as a placeholder?

Answer: Eve

Mordin chose the name, explicitly referencing Eve from the book of Genesis in the human bible. Like the biblical Eve being the first mother, Mordin saw the krogan Eve as the first in a new line of krogan.

If Shepard was sympathetic to the krogan, and Eve in particular, she would tell the commander her true name: Urdnot Bakara.

Shi'ira was the name of the asari consort on the Citadel, Nasanna was a vicious asari businesswoman from the first two games, and Maya was the name of the Alliance intelligence officer from the "Mass Effect 3: Citadel" DLC.
9. In "Mass Effect 3", players finally got to visit the homeworlds of many species. What was the name of the quarian homeworld, which they were finally retaking from the geth?

Answer: Rannoch

During "Mass Effect 3", the quarians were in the middle of retaking their homeworld back from the geth after 300 years of exile. The quarians decided to retake Rannoch for both symbolic and practical purposes. Because of their compromised immune systems, the quarians would be able to adapt to Rannoch in a single generation, rather than a different planet over many generations.

Dekuuna was the homeworld of the elcor, Kahje of the hanar (and adopted by the drell), and Suen was home to the maybe extinct rachni.
10. Use the first letter of the previous nine correct answers to spell the name of a location found in "Mass Effect 3".

Answer: Vancouver

"Mass Effect 3" opened in the city of Vancouver, British Columbia, just before the Reapers arrived.

"Mass Effect 3" was created by Bioware, a company based in Edmonton, Alberta. When showing Earth for the first time in the series, the team decided they wanted feature a Canadian city. Vancouver had hosted the Winter Olympics in 2010, just two years before "Mass Effect 3" was released. Bioware chose Vancouver for its name recognition, and the familiar surrounding scenery that many people had recently seen when watching the Olympics.

The second mission on Earth, and the final mission of the whole game, took place in London, UK, which hosted the 2012 Summer Olympics.
