Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the most iconic locations in the "Mass Effect" universe was the Citadel; a giant space station where all the galaxies governments could meet in peace. Where on the Citadel were the embassies and government offices held?

Answer: Presidium

The Presidium was the center ring that held the Citadel together, with its central tower housing the Council. Governments and the elite had offices around the Presidium, and it was usually a relatively safe place. It was the hub of galactic politics. It was known for its share of white collar crime, though.

The Wards were the long arms of the Citadel that housed the rest of the population. Unique cultures developed in the Wards, with so many species living together in close proximity. Chora's Den and Flux were both clubs in the Wards.
2. The "Mass Effect" history had evidence of a cyclic galactic cleansing that happened roughly every 50 000 years. What was the name of the terrifying species that threatened to return from darkspace and destroy all advanced civilizations?

Answer: Reapers

Shepard first heard about the Reapers in an audio recording of Saren. At the time, Shepard was more concerned with proving Saren's guilt for the attack on Eden Prime, but it also revealed Saren's motives. Saren wanted to bring back the Reapers from dark space so they could once again begin their galaxy-wide cleanse of all advanced civilizations.

The asari were a species from the "Mass Effect" universe, and often perceived as diplomats. The Collectors were the primary enemies of "Mass Effect 2". The Daleks were a terrifying species from the "Doctor Who" series. They were devoid of all emotion except hate.
3. Each of the four weapon types in "Mass Effect" had a special ability associated with them when trained. By spending points on the Assault Rifles talent, which ability was unlocked?

Answer: Overkill

Spending points in the Assault Rifles talent unlocked the ability Overkill. When Overkill was activated, heat generation and accuracy loss from sustained fire were both reduced. This let the user fire long, deadly streams of accurate rounds at enemies.

Marksman was the ability granted by leveling up Pistols. Carnage came from Shotguns, and Assassinate was granted by Sniper Rifles.
4. On of Shepard's goals was to find the artifact known as the Conduit, even though no one knew what it did. To do so, Shepard had to travel to a number of planets, searching for clues. During this quest, the Normandy had to stop at the human colony world of Feros. What ancient creature was secretly living on Feros?

Answer: Thorian

The Thorian was an ancient lifeform that was alive during the Prothean Empire. It had interacted with the Protheans, and understood how their minds worked. The Thorian would go dormant for thousands of years at a time to preserve itself. Saren and Shepard were both able to use the Thorian to acquire the Cipher - the essence of being a Prothean.

The Cipher let them properly understand the visions from the Prothean beacon, which in turn led them to the Conduit.
5. Whenever the geth came across humans, they would either kill them, or impale them on devices called Dragon's Teeth. What enemy did Dragon's Teeth turn the humans into?

Answer: Husks

Husks were first seen on Eden Prime. The geth would take live humans, and impale them upon Dragon's Teeth, which would morph the helpless human into a Husk. Husks were mindless, human-like zombies, but with glowing eyes and technology all over their bodies. They would run at their enemies (Shepard and crew) without any regard for their own safety, and use a strong melee attack. They could also unleash an energy pulse that would disable any nearby shields.

The geth hadn't been seen in 300 years, and no one knew what kind of technology they had developed since then. People were horrified that the geth would create such devices, but in truth, the Reapers had given the geth the Dragon's Teeth.
6. The colony on Feros, Zhu's Hope, was supported by the corporation ExoGeni. Who was running ExoGeni when the geth attacked Feros, and was later found leading the survivors?

Answer: Ethan Jeong

Ethan Jeong was a business executive, even in dire circumstances. Despite being attacked by geth and krogan, and losing a large portion of his staff, he was still looking out for ExoGeni. He was determined to follow protocol, which dictated that the ExoGeni employees stay where they are and wait for help from the head offices. He didn't seem to realise that no one from ExoGeni was going to save them. Ethan dismissed the possibility of other survivors on Feros, also, saying that they were probably already dead, and insistent that Shepard not pry into ExoGeni secrets when fighting through the ExoGeni headquarters.

Needless to say, Ethan Jeong was not loved by all. A senior scientist, Juliana Baynham, fought Ethan's corporate-serving policies. By the time Shepard got back to the survivors, Ethan was waving around a pistol like an untrained office worker (which he was). To calm the situation down, Shepard had to pass one of the highest Charm or Intimidate checks in the game. If the check failed, Ethan would start to become violent, forcing Shepard to shoot him.

Kirrahe was the salarian STG captain on Virmire. Liara T'Soni was Shepard's asari squadmember, and Lady Benezia was her mother.
7. Shepard recruited quite a few skilled people to help save the galaxy. Who did Shepard meet on Eden Prime, at the beginning of "Mass Effect"?

Answer: Ashley Williams

Shepard would always take two squad members whenever leaving the Normandy. At the beginning of "Mass Effect", Shepard went to Eden Prime with Kaidan Alenko and Richard Jenkins. Jenkins died as soon as the squad encountered the geth, bringing the squad down to two. It didn't last long, though, because Shepard soon saved Ashley Williams, who took Jenkins' spot.

Ashley was a Soldier, and could be trained to use all the weapon and armour types. She could provide a foundation for the squad, being able to both deal and take damage. This was offset by her not having any tech or biotic abilities to deal with unique situations. Luckily, Kaidan was a Sentinel, and had access to both, giving Shepard a well-rounded team.

Tali and Wrex were both recruited on the Citadel, after the mission on Eden Prime.
8. Shepard had to travel to a number of interesting, unique worlds during the search for the Conduit. Which world was in a perpetual blizzard, and haven for corporations wanting to escape the scrutiny of galactic law?

Answer: Noveria

Noveria was a snowy planet with few laws, and lax regulations. It's frequent blizzards and generally inhospitable weather also made it an unwelcoming place for anyone looking to vacation. Corporations liked Noveria's laws and privacy for research and development purposes. It was still technically part of Council space, and subject to its laws, but that didn't stop corporations from experimenting in grey areas, or engaging in rampant corporate espionage and warfare.

Lady Benezia was working with Binary Helix, which was using a lab on Noveria. The lab had gone silent, and it was assumed that some catastrophe had befallen it. Shepard was tasked with finding the lab, and what Benezia was after.
9. Spectres were elite agents that worked for the Council. Their task was to ensure the safety of Council interests, without much regard for cost. They also had little oversight. What was the name of the rogue Spectre who betrayed the Council to work with the geth?

Answer: Saren

Saren was a Council Spectre, and a xenophobic turian. He did not worry about collateral damage or suffering individuals, especially non-turians. He was also very effective, and completed his missions, which made the Council overlook the damages he would cause. During the events of "Mass Effect: Revelation", he ended up killing hundreds of humans and batarians, and managed to blame it on Anderson, which prevented Anderson from becoming the first human Spectre. Saren also discovered Sovereign, and his journey to become a pawn of the Reapers started.

The geth worshiped the Reapers as gods. Saren was able to command the geth to help bring about the Reapers' return to the galaxy.

Nihlus was another turian Specter. He was supposed to evaluate Shepard, but was betrayed and killed by Saren on Eden Prime. Hawke was the name of the player character from "Dragon Age II", another game made by Bioware.
10. Use the first letter of the nine previous answers to spell the name of an alien species found in the "Mass Effect" universe.

Answer: Protheans

The Protheans were an extinct alien species that had a galaxy-spanning empire 50 000 years before the events of "Mass Effect" took place ("Mass Effect" was set in 2183 CE). They mysteriously vanished, leaving many artifacts for future space-faring civilizations to find. There were even hints that the Protheans observed, and maybe even experimented with primitive species, including humans. It was a Prothean archive on Mars that taught humanity about element zero, and the ability to travel to new solar systems.

All the ancient structures, such as the mass relays and the Citadel were assumed to be Prothean artifacts from their glory days. The truth turned out to be much more sinister.
