Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To start things off, the all the science in the "Mass Effect" series could be explained by manipulating the density of space itself, by running currents through which fictional substance?

Answer: Eezo

Element Zero, or "eezo", was the fictional substance that provided the foundation for all the fantastic technology in the "Mass Effect" games. It was a non-linear substance, and could conduct current. With current running one direction, eezo would create a "less dense" volume relative to normal. The speed of light through the less dense volume would give the appearance of faster than light travel to someone outside the field. This effect was also used in weapons to accelerate tiny flecks of metal to incredible speeds. If current was run in the other direction, the eezo would create a "more dense" volume, which was used to create artificial gravity, and in kinetic barriers.

Red Sand and Hallex were both drugs in the "Mass Effect" universe. Lyrium was a magic-enhancing ore from the "Dragon Age" series, also created by BioWare.
2. Abilities in "Mass Effect" fell into different categories: combat, biotics, and tech. Tech abilities were known disabling and debuffing enemies. Which tech ability prevented enemies from using their own abilities?

Answer: Damping

Tech abilities in "Mass Effect" were all about disabling enemies. Overload would destroy their shields, Sabotage would overheat their weapons, and Damping would prevent them from using special abilities. Neural Shock would stun organic enemies with a severe migraine.

Warp and Barrier were both biotic abilities. Warp would damage enemies over time, and Barrier would greatly improve the user's shields for a short time.
3. There were six different playable classes in "Mass Effect", with each one being either a specialist in one skill area, or a hybrid of two. Which class was the tech specialist?

Answer: Engineer

The Engineer was the tech specialist in "Mass Effect". It had access to the full array of tech talents and abilities, and had exclusive access to the AI Hacking ability, which would disable a synthetic enemy's identify friend/foe programming, making it go berserk and attack its allies.

The other classes were:
Soldier - combat specialist
Adept - biotic specialist
Vanguard - biotic/combat hybrid
Sentinel - biotic/tech hybrid
Infiltrator - combat/tech hybrid
4. At the beginning of "Mass Effect", Shepard was a candidate for the Spectres, a special forces group working for the Citadel Council. Before becoming one, though, Shpard had to be evaluated by an existing Spectre. What was the name of the turian Spectre who was on the Normandy to watch Shepard in action?

Answer: Nihlus

Nihlus was a Spectre, and was observing the maiden voyage of the Normandy. Officially, he was on board to oversee the recovery of the Prothean artifact. While that was an objective of his, he was also there to evaluate Shepard as a possible candidate for the Spectres. The Eden Prime mission was supposed to be the first of many together, but the geth complicated things, and Nihlus was killed. Shepard managed to still get into the Spectres after exposing Saren as Nihlus' murderer.

Saren, Garrus, and Palin were also turians. Saren was the main antagonist of "Mass Effect", Garrus was one of Shepard's squad members, and Palin was the leader of Citadel Security.
5. In "Mass Effect", players got to explore the galaxy in their very own ship, the Normandy. The Normandy did require more than a few people to make sure she ran smoothly. Who was the navigator and executive officer on the Normandy?

Answer: Pressly

At the very beginning of "Mass Effect", Captain Anderson was the ranking officer on the Normandy, and Shepard was the executive officer. When Anderson stepped down, Shepard became the commanding officer, and Pressly took over as XO. Pressly was in charge of the ship while Shepard was away.

Pressly was willing to work with non-humans, but was still a little xenophobic. He did not care for having non-humans on a Human Alliance military vessel, and with access to critical systems. His views on non-humans slowly changed as he worked with them more and more.

Chakwas was the medical officer of the Normandy, and Joker was the pilot.
6. On the planet Noveria, Matriarch Benezia was conducting some brutal experiments at a remote facility called what?

Answer: Rift Station

Rift Station was a component of the Peak 15 Research facility on Noveria. Peak 15 was run by the corporation Binary Helix, which Saren had significant stock in. He used Binary Helix's resources to perform research on the rachni, a species believed to be extinct.

Zhu's Hope was the name of the colony on the planet Feros. Chora's Den and Flux were both clubs in the Wards on the Citadel.
7. Early in "Mass Effect", Shepard learned that Saren was looking for something called the Conduit to help the return of the Reapers. On which planet was the Conduit?

Answer: Ilos

All Shepard had to go on was an audio file of Saren mentioning the Conduit, and the return of the Reapers. Shepard had to pick up the puzzle pieces on Therrum, Noveria, Feros, and Virmire, before figuring out that the Conduit was on Ilos. Ilos was an ancient Prothean world, kept secret from the Reapers.

There, the Protheans worked desperately to devise a way to break the Reaper-driven extinction cycle.
8. Shepard was a marine in the Human Alliance Navy, and was good at running around and shooting things. Sometimes, though, the distances were too big to walk, and Shepard had to drive. What was the name of the vehicle Shepard used to explore planets in "Mass Effect"?

Answer: Mako

The Mako was the notorious exploration vehicle in "Mass Effect". It had six wheels, and a large mass-accelerator cannon. It also had small jump-jets, and could climb incredibly steep inclines. It was known for being difficult to drive smoothly, and bouncing around a lot. The Mako was also very durable, though, and could lay down heavy fire with its main cannon and machine gun.

The Mako was used on almost every main story location (exceptions being Eden Prime and the Citadel). Whenever Shepard went to explore an optional planet, The Normandy always dropped off the aweigh crew in the Mako. The large distances to cover made the Mako very useful.

The Hammerhead was a hovering assault vehicle that replaced the Mako (sort of) in "Mass Effect 2". The Grizzly was another assault vehicle, like the Mako, but more durable and slower. Shepard never got to properly drive one. Skycars were a mode of civilian transportation seen throughout the galaxy.
9. Despite being able to construct ships that travel faster than the speed of light, many people in the "Mass Effect" universe used which older and slower mode of transportation?

Answer: Elevators

One of the main complaints about "Mass Effect" was the prevalence of elevators. When wandering around hub areas (the story planets, or the Citadel), different sections were often connected with elevators. This let the game load new areas, seemingly in real time. The drawback was that the elevator rides could be very long, boring, and unskippable. Sometimes the party would banter in the elevator, but the voice clips usually did not fill the entire time, and sometimes they did not trigger at all.

In later installments, elevators were removed almost entirely in favor of regular loading screens. These were more efficient, letting any system load an area as fast as it could, instead of forcing the player to wait a certain amount of time. The loading screens also displayed hints and gameplay tips.
10. Use the first letter of the nine previous answers to spell the name of a planet from the "Mass Effect" universe.

Answer: Eden Prime

Eden Prime was the very first planet Shepard set foot on in "Mass Effect". It was one of Earth's first colonies, and proof that humans could establish and maintain colonies beyond their original solar system.

Shepard went to Eden Prime on what was supposed to be a simple retrieval operation. Instead, the colony was attacked by the geth, a Spectre died, and the artifact was destroyed. Things were not looking good for Shepard, but that didn't stop the Commander from exposing Saren, and setting off on a quest to save the galaxy.
