Answer: To cover the construction of Arsenal Gear

The Big Shell was supposedly constructed to contain the environmental catastrophe of oil spilling out into the Atlantic. However there was no oil spill. The Big Shell was constructed to house the development of Arsenal Gear, the newest type of Metal Gear.

2. Raiden's original codename for the mission was Snake. The Colonel changes his name to Raiden for what reason?

Answer: The Terrorist leader calls himself Solid Snake

The Colonel changes Snake's codename to Raiden because the Terrorist leader on the Big Shell calls himself Solid Snake. However, the real Snake supposedly died two years before the Big Shell incident leading Raiden to believe the Terrorist leader is an impostor.

3. What two members of Dead Cell eradicate both squads of Seal Team 10?

Answer: Vamp and Fortune

During your excursion through the first struts of the Big Shell you see Fortune taking out a squad of SEALS with her Railgun, completely annihilating the team and sending them to their deaths. When you going into Strut B, you see the hallway smeared in blood. When you entire the Strut you first meet Vamp who has killed every member of the team without a gun.

Answer: Iroquois Plisken

The man says his name is, "Plisken, Iroquois. Lieutenant Junior Grade." Of course, we all know it is the real Solid Snake, who was supposed to have died during the Tanker incident two year ago.

5. During the course of Raiden's mission throughout the Big Shell, he fights all the members of Dead Cell. Who is the only member of Dead Cell who Raiden actually kills?

Answer: Fatman

Fatman was acting as a rogue agent, not caring if the Big Shell blew up or not. He was the only factor in the simulation the Patriots had not foreseen. If Raiden, Plisken, or Stillman had not stopped any of the bombs Fatman had placed throughout the Big Shell, the whole simulation would have been a failure.

Fortune sees that Raiden is not Solid Snake, the man she believes is the cause of all her suffering and woes, but fights him to see if he could bring her death. You can't hit her regardless of how many times you shoot her because of the Electromagnetic device she is unaware prevents her from being shot.

When the elevator finally comes down, Vamp steps onto the floor. Raiden fires off a few rounds at Fortune, the bullet veers off and hits Vamp in the head. Fortune cries because she thinks Vamp has died, but he revives shortly after Raiden gets on the elevator.

Answer: "Call me Emma."

Emma was in love with Otacon. All she wanted was for him to see as a woman and not a child, which is why she designed the AI that controls Arsenal Gear. Otacon insists on calling her E.E, his nickname for her when they were growing up. Even after she asks him to call her Emma he asks her, "What's wrong with E.E?"

Answer: He served under him as a child soldier

Solidus refreshes Raiden's memory of serving as a child soldier in the Liberian Civil War in the 1980's. Solidus calls Raiden, or Jack, his son however he later admits to killing Raiden's parents and taking him in. Solidus and Raiden were both chosen for the simulation because their relationship reflected that of Big Boss and Snake.

Olga protected Raiden because his nanomachines were being transmitted to the Patriots. She reveals that the Patriots had abducted her child and were using the child to force her to cooperate. Raiden's nanomachines were being monitored by the Patriots and if he died, her child would be killed. Solidus grabs Olga by her throat with one of his Power Suit's "Snake Arms". Before she dies, Olga tells Raiden he has to live. Solidus shoots her in the head and throws her to floor.

This explains why in the fourth installment Raiden does so much for Olga's daughter, Sunny.

Answer: The S3 Plan

The simulation was dubbed the S3 plan for Solid Snake Simulation. The whole Big Shell Incident was designed to mirror the events that happened to Snake on Shadow Moses Island. Everything was arranged and planned by the Patriots except for the mad antics of Fatman. Dead Cell was chosen because their outfit resembled FOX HOUND. Raiden and Solidus were chosen because their relationship mirrored that of Big Boss and Snake. Everything was orchestrated so that the data could be recorded and used as Virtual Reality training to form a soldier into the perfect solider; Solid Snake.
