Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was Phoenix' very first client whom he represented in his first case "The First Turnabout" in "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney" (DS)?

Answer: Larry Butz

Larry Butz was an old friend of Phoenix' from grade school. Larry was always unlucky which is why Phoenix does not believe Larry killed his girlfriend Cindy Stone. Through a little bit of guesswork and some lucky, Phoenix proves that his gut feeling was correct and Larry is declared not guilty. Larry appears in several of Phoenix's cases throughout the many games in the franchise.
2. Although Phoenix was just a rookie lawyer by the time of his second case in "Turnabout Sisters", his successful defense of Maya Fey for the murder of which person proved to be a boom to his career?

Answer: Mia Fey

Mia Fey was Phoenix' boss who took a chance on his law career. She was also Maya's older sister. The Fey Sisters were spirit medium with Maya being seen as having the most potential. Mia became a lawyer instead. On the night Mia was murdered, she called Maya and asked her to watch over an important piece of evidence.

However, Mia was killed and Maya was arrested and charged for the crime. Phoenix defended Maya and she became his assistant when he takes over Mia's law firm. Although the case did not bring in much business for Phoenix, he gained a reputation as a tough, compassionate lawyer among those in the Prosecutor's Office and he started receiving a few high-profile clients.
3. Which of the following was never someone whom Phoenix represented as a client?

Answer: Winston Payne

Winston Payne was a prosecutor who was usually the first prosecutor one faces in a game. He was generally considered to be a competent attorney but not as ruthless as Wright's other main foes.

Zak Gramarye was a client of Phoenix' in the flashback part of "Turnabout Succession" in "Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney" (DS). Zak was part of Troop Gramarye, a magician troop of performers. Zak was accused of murdering his mentor Magnifi who was also his father-in-law. However, during the trial Phoenix was accused of forging evidence and was disbarred. Zak fled his trial and disappeared.

Phoenix represented his old friend and rival Miles Edgeworth in "Turnabout Goodbyes" in "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney". Miles was accused of killer a fellow defense attorney who was involved in an old case of his father's. Miles did not want Phoenix representing him believing his case was a lost cause but Phoenix insisted.

Phoenix represented Maggey Byrde on two occasions. The first was in "The Lost Turnabout" in "Justice for All" (DS) when she was accused of murdering her boyfriend, a fellow police officer. She was on trial again in "Recipe for Turnabout" in "Trials and Tribulations" (DS) and was convicted of murder when someone impersonated Phoenix and represented her. Phoenix, as himself, eventually gets her conviction overturned.

Maggey was the love interest of Detective Dick Gumshoe who was overprotective of her.
4. In the case "Reunion and Turnabout", Maya was once again accused of murder, this time of a shady doctor. This was an important case for Phoenix, not only because his friend was on trial again but because he met several people he would deal with over the course of his career. Which person was not someone he met for the first time during this case?

Answer: Dahlia Hawthorne

Dahlia Hawthorne was a former girlfriend of Phoenix' whom he met well before any of the cases in the franchise.

In "Reunion and Turnabout", Phoenix was reunited with Maya who took time off to enhance her abilities as a spirit medium. While channeling a spirit, something went wrong and it appeared the spirit she was channeling killed Maya's client. Maya was arrested for the murder and Phoenix must clear her name once more. It was during this case when Phoenix first met Maya's young cousin Pearl who joined Phoenix on his future cases when her mother, Maya's aunt, Morgan Fey was arrested as an accomplice to the murder.

Franziska von Karma was a prosecutor. She was a rival of both Phoenix and Miles Edgeworth. Franziska demands perfections and was known to carry a whip. She despised Phoenix because Phoenix was the one responsible for sending her father to prison.
5. "Farewell, My Turnabout" was probably Phoenix' must heart-wrenching and difficult cases for him. For what reason was this?

Answer: He knew his client was guilty

"Farewell, My Turnabout" involved the murder of actor Juan Corrida. Phoenix' client was another actor named Matt Engarde. Juan and Matt were rivals and stars of competing samurai TV shows. During the course of the investigation, Maya was kidnapped. The kidnapper told Phoenix that the only way to save Maya was to have Matt declared not guilty. It quickly came to light that the kidnapper was actually the murderer. The kidnapper is a hitman under the name Shelley de Killer who vows to keep his clients a secret and protect them from being convicted. However, Matt was the person who hired the hitman. When Phoenix learned this, he became conflicted.

On the one hand, Phoenix was most concerned with saving Maya's life at any cost but by doing so, he would let a killer go free. In addition, the only viable defense he could use would involve incriminating an innocent woman named Adrian Andrews.
6. Which of the following people was not someone who defended Phoenix Wright when he was on trial?

Answer: Dick Gumshoe

Dick Gumshoe was a somewhat incompetent detective who bumbled his way through murder investigations.

Phoenix has been on trial on a few occasions. The first is told in flashback in "Turnabout Goodbyes". While in grade school, Phoenix was accused of stealing money from Miles Edgeworth. The class and teacher automatically believed Phoenix guilty but Miles defended him during the class trial. It was this event that first gave Miles and Phoenix their sense of justice.

Phoenix was on trial in a court of law in "Turnabout Memories". He was accused of murdering Doug Swallow, the former boyfriend of his girlfriend Dahlia Hawthorne. He was defended by Mia Fey who hired him after his acquittal.

Phoenix was on trial yet again in "Turnabout Trump". This time, a disbarred Phoenix, was accused of murdering Shadi Smith (who was really Zak Gramarye). He hired Apollo Justice to defend him. He was Apollo's first client but upon his acquittal, Phoenix mentored Apollo.
7. How did Phoenix' relationship with Dahlia Hawthorne end?

Answer: She was convicted of murder and executed

Dahlia Hawthorne gave the appearance of a sweet young girl. However, she was actually a ruthless killer. Prior to her meeting Phoenix, Dahlia was involved in a fake kidnapping scheme that resulted in the murder of a police officer. Dahlia was not convicted because the defendant in that case committed suicide. This story is told in the case "Turnabout Beginnings". Dahlia was also suspected, but not convicted or tried, in the poisoning of Diego Armando, Mia's law partner.

When Phoenix is on trial for the murder of Doug Swallow (Dahlia's ex-boyfriend) Dahlia is called as a witness. Mia tries to blame the murder on her but Phoenix is too infatuated with Dahlia to let Mia do that. Mia continues, however, and it comes to light Dahlia only dated Phoenix to get back a necklace that contained a vial. She had poisoned Diego with the via and then disposed of the evidence by giving it to Phoenix. She then spent months trying to get it back from him.

Mia is successful in defending Phoenix and Dahlia is declared guilty and then executed. However, this is not the last Phoenix will see of her.
8. What did Phoenix' magatama allow him to see?

Answer: Psyche-locks

Maya gave Phoenix a magatama in "Reunion and Turnabout". This allowed Phoenix to see Psyche-locks or locks that would alert him to when someone was lying to him. Phoenix would need to present evidence in order to unlock the Psyche-locks and the person in question would reveal his or her secret.

This came in handy in nearly every case for Phoenix, though a suspect could easily avoid being exposed as a liar through carefully worded phrases.
9. In the case "Turnabout Trump", Phoenix revealed he had a daughter named Trucy. Which of the following was true regarding Trucy?

Answer: She would help Phoenix cheat at poker

"Turnabout Trump" took place during the time when Phoenix was disbarred. Because he could no longer practice law, Phoenix was forced to play piano at the Borscht Bowl Club. However, Phoenix could not play the piano and was actually a poker player in secret (gambling was said to be illegal at the time). Phoenix never lost a game of poker and players from around the world would come to the Borscht Bowl Club to face him. Trucy would sometimes aid Phoenix to help him win.

Trucy was the daughter of Zak and Thalassa Gramarye who were performance magicians. Thalassa was believed to be dead and Zak fled while he was on trial for a murder. Phoenix adopted Trucy as a result of her being orphaned. Trucy continued the family tradition and was a magician herself. She believed she was an only child. However, Phoenix recognized that his apprentice Apollo Justice was also the son of Thalassa, making him Trucy's half brother even though neither of the siblings was aware of it.
10. The case "Turnabout Succession" largely focused on Phoenix getting redemption on the person who framed him as a forger and caused him to be disbarred. Who was this person?

Answer: Kristoph Gavin

Kristoph Gavin was a defense attorney who was Zak Gramarye's first attorney. However, Zak fired Kristoph for Phoenix and Kristoph wanted revenge. He hired a forger to create a fake diary page that would clear Zak in the murder of his father-in-law Magnifi. However, the diary page was easily proved to be a fake and Phoenix was disbarred for having allegedly ordered its creation. Phoenix spent years crafting the perfect plot to expose Kristoph. When Drew Misham, the alleged forger, turned up dead from poison years later, Phoenix saw his chance.

Drew's daughter Vera (who is the actual forger) was on trial for the murder and was represented by Apollo. The prosecutor was Kristoph's brother Klavier. Kristoph was already in prison for the murder he committed in "Turnabout Trump" but is called as a witness. Apollo exposed Kristoph as the forger and the killer of Drew Misham.

Kristoph had attempted to kill his forger (whom he had never met) by mailing a poisoned stamp to them and asking them to use it when they mailed the letter back to him. However, the stamp was a collectable stamp of Troop Gramarye and was preserved until years later. Phoenix gave all of this information to Apollo who used it in court.

Phoenix also developed a jurist system to be used in this case (similar to a jury system). One of the jurors happened to be Thalassa Gramarye whom Phoenix was able to convince to declare Vera not guilty, as a guilty verdict would have allowed Kristoph to get away with this crime and allowed Phoenix' disbarment to stand.
