Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Whose name means "Red Shirt" in Greek?

Answer: Kokeeno Pookameeso

I cannot imagine what parents would name their son "Red Shirt", but it could be worse. In "Quest For Glory 2", there is a character named "Beggar".

Kokeeno Pookameeso is a guard for the city of Silmaria, and has been since he was 16. He looks and dresses just like all the other guards of the city, except he wears his namesake red shirt while the other guards wear purple shirts. He dies very early on in the Rites of Rulership. He is based on "Star Trek", in which characters with red shirts get sent off to die.
2. What character shares his name with a character in "Space Quest 6"?

Answer: Magnum Opus

Magnum Opus shares his name with the big guy who guards the Shuttle Bay doors in "Space Quest 6". However, neither Scott Murphy nor Josh Mandel ever complained because "Space Quest" has gotten Sierra sued multiple times for rip offs. In that game, little is known about Magnum Opus other than that Roger Wilco owes him money.

In "Quest For Glory 5", Magnum Opus is an egotistical bragging warrior who competes in the Rites of Rulership. He usually backs up his bragging though. In the arena, he beats everybody except Elsa. Elsa and Toro dislike him. Pholus really likes him as he is cut from a similar cloth.
3. What is the first rite?

Answer: Freedom

The first rite is the rite of freedom. Marete's fishing villages have been overwhelmed by invaders and nearly all the fishermen have fled. There are five fishing villages and five contestants. Each contestant must drive away the invaders in one fishing village and return to Silmaria with the sigil of the village as proof that they have succeeded.
4. What fishing village is the hero supposed to go to?

Answer: Naxos

The hero gets tasked with freeing Naxos by process of elimination after the other four contestants select a village. Kokeeno chooses Paros because that's where he was born. Gort and Elsa don't get a choice: their sponsors respectively choose Keros and Ios for them because each village is closest that where that sponsor and contestant spend most of their time. Fortunately, the hero has a good sponsor and did not have to worry about what Elsa and Gort had to worry about. It's not that the hero had a choice in his village (he really didn't because the other four contestants chose before him) and the hero had no reason to care which village to free even if he had the first choice, but the hero has good reason to be happy that Rakeesh did not choose for him. Other contestants wish they had freedom of choice.

The hero can free the other fishing villages. In fact the hero should free the other fishing villages. You get points for each village he frees and there are many other items you can obtain. You can also obtain all the money you will ever need for the rest of the game if you free the other villages, both by finding it, and by selling all of the useless items to find to Pholus.
5. What item can the hero get from Tinos?

Answer: Magic Leather Armor

Each fishing village has a different unique item that can be obtained from that village and no other fishing village. Tinos is one of the less rewarding fishing villages because you can buy magic leather armor or find it elsewhere. Some of the other fishing villages have items that cannot be bought or found anywhere else in the game except the Minos treasure room and you can't get there until much later in the game.
6. Is it possible for someone else to win the first rite?

Answer: Yes

Some rites can only be won by the hero. This rite can be won by anyone except Kokeeno who dies on his way to Paros. If you take too long, other fishing villages will have been cleaned out before you got there. If you really take too long, you will lose. The amount of time you have depends on the difficulty setting. However, even at the highest difficulty level, you have plenty of time.
7. When the hero sees Kokeeno's dead body, what should he do?

Answer: Knock on the Door to the Guard Tower by the West Gate

When the hero sees Kokeeno's dead body, he should go back to Silmaria and knock on the door to the guard tower. From there, when the guard answers, the game will automatically make the hero tell the guard about Kokeeno. This is not required to beat the game, but you get points for this.
8. What is the second rite?

Answer: Conquest

After freeing the fishing villages, the surviving contestants are tasked with finding the Mercenary Fortress and defeat the general Claudius. After this rite is completed, Silmaria no longer has to worry about an invasion.
9. Is it possible to get Claudius to surrender?

Answer: No

Rakeesh says that it is possible to get Claudius to surrender, but Rakeesh is wrong. You must kill him. It is possible that Lori and Corey may have originally intended to program in a way to get Claudius to surrender, but either they forgot or they dropped it.
10. Is it possible for the hero to discover Magnum Opus' dead body by the dragon pillar?

Answer: No

Unlike Kokeeno, the hero cannot discover Magnum Opus' death. It happens and is discovered while the hero is at Sifnos. It's questionable what Magnum Opus was doing at the dragon pillar where he was killed. That pillar is to the northeast of town and the fortress is to the southwest.
11. What is the third rite?

Answer: Valor

For the third rite, contestants must travel to Hydra Island to take on the three-headed dragon. This is a questionable rite, as the rites are supposed to help the city of Silmaria and the Hydra was no threat to Silmaria. Both Rakeesh and Elsa point this out. Rakeesh didn't want this to be the rite of valor; he wanted the contestants to go after the assassin.

But Logo and Minos outnumbered him. Logos wanted to keep the contestants safe from the assassin and Minos didn't want the contestants going after his hired man.
12. On Hydra Island, the hero finds many items that will be useful later on in the game. What is NOT an item from Hydra Island that the hero gets?

Answer: Bow

The hero cannot get the bow. Elsa automatically takes it. The hero never learned how the use a bow and arrow anyway, so it's just as well. Originally, "Quest For Glory 5" was supposed to be a multi-player game. You were supposed to be able to get the bow if you played as Elsa. However, the multi-player idea never materialized. Hence, the only thing you can do with the arrows you find is sell them to Pholus.

The dragon scales are for a fire-proofing potion that Salim can make. The sap and rope serve a purpose for the next rite.
13. Can the hero lose the third rite?

Answer: Yes, if he gives the teeth to Elsa

Gort will not participate in this Rite and Elsa always lets the hero get the teeth, regardless of who does the fighting. However, the hero can give the teeth to Elsa and let her win the Rite. This is a good idea if you plan on proposing to Elsa later in the game. If you don't do this, you will have to wait until day 20 and challenge her in the arena, or else you won't be able to marry her.
14. What is the fourth rite?

Answer: Destiny

For the fourth rite, contestants must got to an island northwest of Marete and visit the Sybil. She will tell the contestants of the next rite, the prophecy, and what they should do if the dragon rises.
15. What happens if the hero jumps in the pool at Delos?

Answer: He dies

The pool at Delos is a magical pool. Only gold coins are supposed to enter this pool. The Famous Adventurer warns you that the Sybil can be cold if you don't treat her with respect.
