Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Labyrinth of Time" is loosely based on which mythology?

Answer: Greek

Created by Terra Nova Development, this game starts with a commuter subway train being sucked into another dimension. Daedalus then explains that he has been forced to create a labyrinth that will enable King Minos to invade and conquer through the space time continuum.

The player has to destroy the labyrinth before this happens. It was intended to be the first in a series of games, but was not successful and the sequels were never produced. It can currently be found on Apple iPad and iPhone.
2. Of the following, which is NOT a realm in "Dark Age of Camelot"?

Answer: Valhalla

This game, released in 2001 on Windows, is based on Arthurian legend, Celtic mythology or Norse mythology depending on which realm is chosen. It is set in a period after the death of King Arthur, with the kingdom split into three realms that are at war with each other. Players can play singly or combine into groups.
3. Which game is set in Ancient Greece, and features a resurrected centurion who has to rescue the daughter of Zeus?

Answer: Altered Beast

Released as a Sega arcade game in 1988, this is a straightforward beat the enemy game. The centurion has to rescue Athena from the Underworld. To do this he is given the ability to turn into various half man half monster creatures. Players battle various undead creatures in different settings until finally reaching the Underworld and battling the god Neff for Athena.
4. In which game does the player take the role of the Norse god Baldur?

Answer: Too Human

Originally designed for Sony PlayStation, this game took ten years to come to the market, eventually being released on Xbox 360. It features cybernetic Norse gods protecting mankind from the machine armies of Loki. Baldur is less cybernetic than the other gods, which gives the game the "Too Human" name.
5. Egyptian mythology features in "Sphinx and The Cursed Mummy". As well as Sphinx, which other role does the player fall into?

Answer: Tutankhamen

Tutankhamen is an undead mummy, and Sphinx can restore him by finding various Canopic vases in which his soul is stored. Each vase brings him back to life for a short time. As he cannot be killed his periods of 'life' can be used to go through various traps, finding objects to help Sphinx.

As the game progresses the objects and tasks that Sphinx has to undertake become harder and more dangerous.
6. "Rise of the Argonauts" is based on the legend of Jason and the Golden Fleece. Where does Jason have to go to find the fleece?

Answer: Tartarus

Jason's wife has been killed and he can only restore her to life by finding and using the Golden Fleece. Jason and his companions have to travel to Tartarus, the hell of the Greek Underworld to retrieve the fleece. As in the original legend he is accompanied by the Argonauts, and together they battle various sorcerers, mercenaries and mythical beats.
7. "UnReal World" is a game set in iron age Finland. The player has only one goal. What is it?

Answer: Survival

The player is a member of a Scandinavian tribe, and takes an authentic iron age occupation, such as hunter, fisherman or trapper. He can go anywhere in the virtual world and experience such things as frostbite, skinning an animal, building a shelter. The environment is harsh and challenging, and an unexpected event such as a snowstorm can kill the player off very quickly.
8. Published by Microsoft, which game has Atlantean admiral Arkantos hunting a cyclops?

Answer: Age of Mythology

Based on Egyptian, Norse and Greek mythology players build towns, gather resources and fight enemies. Advancement is through four "Ages". Arkantos has to travel through each mythology to find the cyclops who is in league with Poseidon against Atlantis. This is a spin off from the "Age of Empire" series.
9. "Magicka" is based on which mythology?

Answer: Norse

Released in 2011 for Microsoft Windows, "Magicka" is based on Norse mythology. Four mages fight an evil sorcerer. The game takes historical liberties, at one stage giving an M60 machine gun as a weapon. It draws inspiration from other games such as "Warhammer".

There is no role playing in this game, and no limit to the magic spells that can be cast. It can be played by a single player or four in combination.
10. Which exclusively on-line game is based on the epic poem "Beowulf"?

Answer: Grendel's Cave

Set in the medieval period, this has been on line since 1988. It is considered a learning tool for medieval literature as well as a real time adventure game. The original version was based on an old pen and paper game with the same name.
