Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who created Mario (one of their many famous Nintendo characters)?

Answer: Shigeru Miyamoto

Shigeru Miyamoto also created Link and Donkey Kong and Star Fox, just to name a few. Hajime Yajima, Daiki Iwamoto, and Toshio Iwawaki were all programmers on the "Super Mario 64" team, but they did not create the famous Italian plumber. Miyamoto has presented for Nintendo at many of the "E3" video game and electronics conventions. Without Miyamoto, platformers may not exist, and Nintendo would probably have been out of the console gaming business for a long time.
2. What is the name of the fellow who follows Mario with a camera throughout the game?

Answer: Lakitu

Yes, Lakitus have been around since "Super Mario Bros." They used to throw those pesky red Spineys at Mario. Camera Creepers do not exist, Fly Guys are just Shy Guys with helicopter blades on their heads, and Paratroopas are Koopas with wings. The Lakitu in this game seems to be a part of a reporting company of some kind called the "Lakitu Bros." Lakitus appeared as enemies in this game as well, appearing in Rainbow Ride and Tiny, Huge Island.
3. What are those pesky enemies that are asleep in Whomp's Fortress?

Answer: Piranha Plants

Piranha Plants have also been around for the bulk of the Mario series's lifetime. Some have the ability to spit fire! In Whomp's Fortress, they snap at Mario for waking them up. They are know in previous games for coming out of warp pipes and spitting fire at Mario, as opposed to growing from the ground.

Some are even known to stand on feet! One example is Petey Piranha from "Super Mario Sunshine".
4. How many times must Bowser be thrown into a bomb in Bowser in the Sky?

Answer: 3

Bowser is much more powerful in Bowser in the Sky than he is in any other appearance. He can do a high jump that emits a shockwave that will electrocute Mario if he fails to jump over it. His flame breath also comes in larger quantities and he tends to be harder to grab by the tail. Upon being blown up twice, Bowser will proceed to break off pieces of the arena to form the shape of a star.

This makes it a little harder to hit the bombs because Mario will have to throw Bowser from a greater distance.
5. Which friend from "Super Mario World" can be found atop the castle after collecting 120 Power Stars?

Answer: Yoshi

Yoshi was a helpful companion in "Super Mario World" because of his ability to eat some foes. Monty Mole and Iggy Koopa were both enemies! Mario can only meet Yoshi after getting 120 Power Stars. There are 2 difficult methods to get on top of the castle without using the cannon that is unlocked after collecting 120 Power Stars. Yoshi, however, will not be atop the castle until Mario has collected 120 Power Stars.
6. What is the name of Mario's friend whose head resembles a mushroom?

Answer: Toad

Toads are interesting little guys! Some of them in the castle will give Mario Power Stars simply for talking to them! Princess Toadstool is commonly called Peach, and she is known for being kidnapped by Bowser. Goombas look like mushrooms, but they are foes, at least where this game is concerned. Birdo debuted in "Super Mario Bros. 2" and was an enemy.

She and Yoshi seem to have something of a relationship. Birdo has also been referred to as a male, but not commonly in the United States.
7. What is the name of the Condor that steals Mario's hat in Shifting Sand Land?

Answer: Klepto

This is one of the facts that more casual fans may not know. Ukkiki also steals Mario's hat, but it is a monkey. Ukkiki may be found at Tall, Tall Mountain near the Fly Guy. Another monkey can be found atop the mountain in the Power Star Mystery of the Monkey Cage. Once that monkey is caught, it will beg Mario to release it. If done, it will run off and release the Power Star from the cage.
8. Which enemy gives out a blue coin when defeated in a special way?

Answer: Big Goomba from Tiny, Huge Island

If Mario ground pounds a Big Goomba, it will give Mario a blue coin instead of a yellow one. Boos in the courtyard give yellow coins unlike the ones in Big Boo's Haunt. The Big Bob-omb is a boss in Bob-omb Battlefield that rewards Mario with a Power Star upon defeating him.

He is routinely the first boss one would face, but it is possible to bypass him by collecting a different Power Star.
9. What does the baby penguin from Cool, Cool Mountain have in common with its mother (according to its mother)?

Answer: Beak

Of course it is arguable that they have virtually everything in common except for size, but the mother just says beak. There is another penguin that is identical to the mother's child that is very near to her, but she insists that it is not her child and that it doesn't look like her.

There is another adult penguin that Mario must race in the cabin to collect a Power Star that looks exactly like the mother. The reason for these "clones" may or may not have been because of memory constraints.
10. Koopa the Quick is also known as King Koopa.

Answer: False

Bowser is the one also known as King Koopa. He is the main antagonist of almost every Mario game, and he is fairly menacing. He can be defeated in "Super Mario 64" by being thrown at bombs that surround the arena that Mario fights him in. Koopa the Quick is the Koopa Troopa that challenges Mario to a race in Bob-omb Battlefield and Tiny, Huge Island.

In Tiny, Huge Island he offers a much shorter race, and he seems to be considerably faster.
