Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's have a go at it! The Sniper hails from what country?

Answer: Australia

With a thick accent and a weapon called the Sydney Sleeper, there's no mistaking this character's origin. Nationalities of other characters include French (Spy), German (Medic), Russian (Heavy), Scottish (Demoman), American (Scout, Engineer, and Soldier), and unknown (Pyro).
2. The Sniper isn't the only marksman, though. What other two classes have steady enough hands to score critical headshots?

Answer: Spy and Pyro

The Spy can score a headshot with his trusty Ambassador, but some players may not know that the Pyro can use the alternate fire on his flamethrower to fire a compression blast and reflect arrows fired from the Sniper's Huntsman bow. With incredible skill and timing, this can result in a headshot and almost certain death on its recipient.

This is rarely necessary, though. A Sniper whose arrow is reflected will likely be quite flustered regardless of where the returned arrow lands. Furthermore, reflected projectiles always do at least 1.5 times the damage they would have done to their intended targets.

This multiplication is called a "mini-crit," which is short for Miniature Critical Hit. Normal Critical Hits do three times base damage.
3. On the subject of mini-crits, what Sniper weapon introduced this slight attack buff?

Answer: Jarate

This was released on the May 21st, 2009 patch, better known as the "Sniper vs. Spy Update". Jarate is a jar of dubious yellow liquid. It is thrown and acts as a projectile. Upon impact with any player, wall, or floor, it will shatter, creating an area of splash effect. Anyone caught within will be coated with the liquid, and all damage taken for the duration of its ten second effect will be in the form of mini-crits.

Although it does not effect players on the same team of its thrower, Jarate will break on impact with friendly players.

This can cause frustration if such interference causes it to miss its mark. More appropriate to the update, Jarate also reveals invisible Spies. One more word of warning: as a projectile, Jarate can be reflected by Pyros, and the effect will turn against you and your team! How humiliating!
4. What is the maximum number of points of damage that can be done with the stock Sniper Rifle? (Note: Assume the recipient of the shot is using all default weapons and thus is not equipping any that would affect damage received.)

Answer: 450

This is a handy amount, for it is precisely the maximum amount of health a Heavy can have when overhealed by a Medic, which is the mosthealth of any class. It is only possible to deal this much damage in one hit with a fully charged headshot from the Sniper Rifle or a backstab with the Spy (however, according to the damage algorithm for the backstab, it actually does six times the health of its recipient, or 2700 damage in this case).

This effectively means that the Sniper can kill any class in a single shot.

The Sniper Rifle only charges while the player is looking through the scope. A headshot from minimum scope time will only do 150 damage, and headshots cannot be performed without looking through the scope. A full charge requires 3.3 seconds of scope time, during which the Sniper's vision is limited and his speed is slowed.

This system was implemented to prevent "quickscoping" and "noscoping," which are both techniques used in Valve's "Counter-Strike". They involve maintaining mobility while also being able to quickly dispatch enemy players with expert skill at headshots. Damage range and necessary speed and vision checks help keep the Sniper from being too overpowered compared to other classes.
5. Speaking of class health, what is the Sniper's max health when equipping the standard SMG (without an overheal)?

Answer: 125

Unless he is equipping the Darwin's Danger Shield, the Sniper will spawn with 125 health and overheal to 185 health. This is the lowest amount for classes equipping standard weapons, tied with the Scout, Spy, and Engineer. The Scout, however, can spawn with a meager 110 health if he uses the Sandman. With the Danger Shield, the Sniper spawns with 150 health, which means he can overheal to a whopping 225 health.

This can be a real problem for enemy Snipers, who can usually rely on a quick, 150 damage headshot to snag a kill. If you're not the quickest gun from Down Under, you might consider the Danger Shield.
6. Which Sniper vs. Spy weapon allows the Sniper to perform a taunt kill?

Answer: The Huntsman

While carrying the Huntsman and taunting, the Sniper removes an arrow from his quiver, spins it around, and impales his victim. This stuns the victim much like the Sandman. He then quickly extracts the arrow and deals far more than enough damage to instantly kill his opponent.

The Huntsman's taunt kill function is the least risky of all classes. It is quick, and it can often catch a charging enemy off guard. Of course, like any taunt kill, it is still rather dangerous. If it misses, it will leave the Sniper to perform the entire animation with no reward, which is a good way to get killed. Curiously, it will still kill an opponent if they are not impaled and stunned by the arrow. All that matters is that they are in the area of effect when the Sniper removes the arrow. Humorously, the taunt will stun (but not kill) an enemy that is ÜberCharged. Fortunately, the stun lasts long enough that successive taunts will eventually outlast the duration of the ÜberCharge and kill the enemy. Having done this myself, I can say it is quite difficult but hilarious. Finally, performing this taunt kill will earn the "Shafted" achievement.
7. What is the Sniper's surname?

Answer: Mundy

In wonderful Valve fashion, this was revealed in one of their many free updates for this fantastic game. It was released along with in the May 5, 2011 patch, better known as the "Replay Update". The update involved allowing players to edit replays of their favorite in-game moments.

As they have so often, Valve released a comic along with the update called "Meet the Director". In this update, a snobbish video director refers to the Sniper as Mister Mundy.
8. Which of these classes runs faster than the Sniper at max speed?

Answer: Medic

The Sniper runs at what is considered 100% speed for the game. The Medic runs at 107%. The Spy, Engineer, and Pyro run at the same speed as the Sniper; however, the Pyro runs a bit faster if he equips the Gas Jockey's Gear weapons set. The Heavy runs at a plodding 77% speed, and he is the slowest class. The Scout runs at a steady clip of 133% speed, and he is the fastest class.
9. Which of these is not a Sniper battle cry?

Answer: "G'day, mate!"

Although many of the Sniper's lines include the word "mate," this is not one of them. The one Sniper battle cry that does include the word "mate" is "Go on then, mates!"
10. Finally, complete the Sniper's mantra. "Be polite. Be efficient. Have a plan to kill everyone you..."

Answer: meet

This line was taken from the final bit from Valve's video, "Meet the Sniper". "Kill Everyone You Meet" is also the name of an achievement earned for killing 1000 enemies. Much like the rest of the classes, the Sniper is a bit of a psychopath!
