Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This game saw an apparent career change for everyone's favorite plumber, Mario. In this game, Mario had to destroy viruses by dropping down pills. What game was this?

Answer: Dr. Mario

The genre that "Dr. Mario" fell into was that of the puzzle variety. Using the winning formula of "Tetris" Nintendo created a Mario game in which the idea was to drop pills in formation and destroy viruses hiding on different levels of the screen. The game featured twenty-five levels that drastically increased in difficulty.
2. This game was the first game of what would eventually be a gaming phenomenon. Developed by Square Corporation Ltd., the game starred nameless characters known as the "Light Warriors", as they traveled through a nameless 'fantasy' land. What game was it?

Answer: Final Fantasy

Gameplay in "Final Fantasy" was very similar to other console RPGs of the time. The true success of the game lay in its graphics, music, and story. The only negative thing about the game that many reviewers have pointed out over the years is that because of the bad pacing issues for battles, you'd have to wait far too long to get into a random battle meaning that you gain experience less frequently and as a result, you stand less of a chance of victory in difficult battles.
3. This game was released in the arcades in 1988, and proved to be a highly controversial game because of its high level of violence and use of drugs. Seeing the popularity of the game in arcades, Rare Ltd. decided to port the game to the NES and did so in 1990. What game was this?

Answer: Narc

Although "Narc" received criticism for its questionable content, its revolutionary contribution to the gaming world was in the graphics. This was the first game to use digitized graphics, a system that Midway would adopt for its "Mortal Kombat" games. In fact, the game had such a high level of colors, that the number wasn't surpassed until 1993, by "Mortal Kombat 2".
4. This sequel to Nintendo's staple franchise saw a return of the infamous plumber, as he was given the task of saving the seven kingdoms of the Mushroom World from the Koopa Kids by recovering the magic wands stolen from the seven kings, and also save Princess Toadstool from the clutches of King Bowser. What game was this?

Answer: Super Mario Brothers 3

"Super Mario Brothers 3" was the very first game in the "Mario" series to feature Bowser's children. The popularity of the game lay in its expansive and non-linear gameplay. In fact, the game was so popular that it went on to sell more than 17 million copies world-wide, a record at the time for video games that were sold separately from their consoles.
5. This very fast-paced game starring a spiky rodent is perhaps the sole reason for the mythic status of the Sega Genesis in gaming history. Not only were levels designed to flow quickly, they were also littered with yellow rings that the main character used to protect themselves from death. What game was this?

Answer: Sonic the Hedgehog

"Sonic the Hedgehog" added the element of speed to the platform formula and introduced other unique elements as well, such as loops and springy boards now associated with the game series. "Sonic" raised the bar for platformers and even managed to turn over some Nintendo fans to Sega's system. Due to its popularity, more than forty games in the series have been released since 1991.
6. This game, released in 1991 to the arcades absolutely revolutionized the fighting genre of games. The game's aim was not graphics or flashiness, but rather control and playability. The end of the game put the player against a powerful boss named M. Bison. What game was this?

Answer: Street Fighter 2

"Street Fighter 2" featured a line-up of eight playable characters that a player could use to battle their way around the world. Once someone beat the core characters, four smaller boss battles would ensue until the ultimate boss, M. Bison would be reached.

The greatness of the game left other fighting games forgotten. It has been consistently named one of the top videogames of all time for its unique gameplay, tight controls, and varying fight tactics for all characters.
7. This game is the first sequel in the Chris Roberts' flight simulator series of games about an interstellar war between the 'Terran Federation' and a warrior race called the 'Kilrathi'. What game is this?

Answer: Wing Commander 2

"Wing Commander 2" was unique for the time because it was engaging, dynamic, had fantastic story telling ability, and its action and combat were all well balanced into the gameplay. The game maintained a high level of popularity and remains, to this day, a legend in the space-combat genre.
8. This 1991 game was the very first launch title of Nintendo's brand new system, the Super NES. This game marked one of the earliest appearances of the Yoshis. Among them were green, yellow, red, and blue ones. What game was this?

Answer: Super Mario World

Mario, Luigi and Princess Toadstool set out on a vacation to Dinosaur Island. During their vacation, the Princess was kidnapped. In order to save her, Mario has to go through seven worlds and defeat the Koopa Kids before a final encounter with Bowser, so he can save her.

The game was a side-scrolling adventure game, similar to the other "Mario" games, but this time around, the 16 bit graphics put this one ahead of the competition, and helped sell the Super Nintendo. Like the other "Mario" games, this one was also one of the world's best selling games.
9. This sequel to the heavily popular RPG by Square, was released in Japan, in 1991 to help with the Super NES' rising sales. In this version of the game four siblings named Firion, Maria, Guy and Leon must stop an evil Emperor in the Kingdom of Fynn. What game was this?

Answer: Final Fantasy 2

This game of the infamous "Final Fantasy" series, was unique for the fact that it did not feature experience-based leveling. Instead of earning experience for all attributes of your character, you earned experience based on the weapons you use and the arts you use. Potentially your strength could surpass your defense, without special items.

The game's initial release didn't have the most popular reception in North America for many reasons. The first was that the game was buggy, the second being that the game seemed incomplete, mainly due to the fact that translations were incomplete.

In Japan, the game was known as "Final Fantasy 4". A new bug-free version of the game was released for the Game Boy Advance in 2003.
10. This football game was the first football game to actually acquire the NFL license, finally featuring all twenty-eight teams of the day. This football game was also the only one to make it into 'Electronic Gaming Monthly's' top 100 games of all time. What game was this?

Answer: Tecmo Super Bowl

Because of the success of the first game, Tecmo had to release a sequel of its football game. This time around, it featured all NFL teams of the day, and had no major glitches to complain about. Probably the most groundbreaking part about the game was the fact that it was the first game to feature full regular season and post-season schedules, a feature made standard today.

The highly addictive gameplay has made this one of the best games of all time.
