The beginning of this adventure is...erm...complicated. Nathan Drake awakens in a train, but said train is already halfway over the edge of a cliff, dangling in its final moments. To survive, Nathan must climb his way out, one car at a time, and make it to solid ground in the freezing cold. How he ended up here is a bit of a mystery.

A flashback commences the origin of the story. In a tropical paradise, Nathan met with Harry Flynn and Chloe Frazer. Flynn has a job for Drake-- they need to lift something of Marco Polo's from a museum. Drake initially says no, but the plan develops-- a note from Marco Polo is leading seekers to the Lost Fleet which disappeared after visiting Kubla Khan. First, the mission takes them to Istanbul, Turkey, four months before the train incident.

Answer: An oil lamp

To locate the spot where the Lost Fleet could be found, Drake, Flynn, and Chloe were required to infiltrate a Turkish museum to locate an oil lamp allegedly brought back from Kubla Khan which could hold the whereabouts of the Lost Fleet. Heading up through the sewers, Drake and Flynn make their way through the museum before finally infiltrating the main tower containing the oil lamp.

When they smash it open and light the resins inside, they're able to read a small map and note leading them to the Lost Fleet in Borneo.

The fleet allegedly reached the treasures of Shambhala and Shangri-La. When they start to depart, Flynn turns the tables on Drake and gets him caught by the Turkish guards; he spends three months in a Turkish prison before Sully and, surprisingly, Chloe, breaks him out. Now's their chance to head to Borneo, stop Flynn and the real enemy, Zoran Lazarević, without their knowing.

Answer: Borneo

Heading to Borneo to hunt down the fabled Cintomani Stone and put a wedge into Flynn and Lazarević's plans, Drake and Sully (with double agent Chloe), seek out the ships run aground during a hurricane as part of Polo's Lost Fleet. Upon searching through Lazarević's hut, they discover that the Cintomani Stone can not be there-- they must be looking for a way into Shambhala.

They head to higher ground looking for the possible shelter used by the fleet and, eventually, they find it in the basement of a ruined temple.

Here, using more resin, they discover that the fleet may have killed each other. Amongst the bones they find a box containing a phurba, a ritual object shaped like a dagger (but which is actually a key). They also find a map containing a field of temples with golden, gilded spires, and one of them conceals the secret path that will lead them to Shambhala. Chloe diverts the enemies and plans to meet Drake in Nepal, the location housing this next step; Drake and Sully plunge off a cliff to escape.

Answer: A temple

Drake arrives in Nepal during the midst of a local war (fueled by none other than Lazarević). Amidst fights against both Lazarević and local Guerrillas, he meets with Chloe and the two of them, seeking out a temple bearing the mark of the Cintomani Stone, first decide to head to the highest building in the city (aptly named the Hotel Shangri-La) to spot it. Unfortunately it's in the center of the enemy base. On the way, Nathan is surprised to run into Elena Fisher, the reporter who traveled with him to find Sir Francis Drake's fortune; she's in the city to film footage of Lazarević, supposedly dead but still a war criminal.

When Drake reveals that he's competing with the psycho to find Shambhala, she and her cameraman come along. Chloe and Drake go it alone once inside the temple and, after solving some puzzles with the phurba, find a secret chamber deep beneath leading to a specific mountain pass in the Himalayas-- the entrance to Shambhala.

Answer: Jeff

After racing out of the temple, Nathan and Chloe find Elena and Jeff outside in the middle of a gunfight; Jeff is wounded. Rather than leave him behind, Drake offers to carry him while the girls give cover fire. They run through the city, but they get trapped and both Flynn and Lazarević catch up. Jeff is killed despite their efforts while Chloe is taken to the trainyard, still with her cover intact. Elena and Drake manage to elude their enemies and go to the trainyard, and while Elena splits off to find an escape Jeep, Nathan forces his way in as a distraction.

He gets on the train (with help from Elena), and goes hurtling through the jungle.

Answer: Tenzin

When Drake finally gets onto the train, a number of obstacles are put into his way. Between a helicopter bombing the train, the dangers of a tunnel, and hordes of enemies, Nathan will make it to the front to find Chloe but he'll get shot by Flynn. To escape, Drake will shoot the propane tanks in one car, derailing the locomotive (resulting in the predicament from the start of the game).

He finds the phurba and struggles to escape but it doesn't end there; after more gunfights, he'll collapse while ascending a mountain. Luckily he'll be found by a wandering Tibetan, Tenzin, who will bring him back to his village and nurse him to health. Elena will be there along with a German man named Karl Schafer and Nate and Tenzin will be sent off to find the men who died during Schafer's expedition to Shambhala (to find the Cintamani Stone) seven decades earlier.

Answer: Yetis

Tenzin leads Nathan up the mountain above the small town to a cave system which inadvertently leads deep into the heart of the cliffside to an elaborate ancient temple. En route, however, the two are attacked by a beastly Yeti-like creature which refuses to die.

After careful navigation through the caves and notable teamwork, Nathan and Tenzin can both reach Schafer's men to discover that they were all shot and killed, likely by Schafer himself, and that they were German SS men in search of the Cintamani Stone. Nathan uncovers a book but the two are forced to flee from a rampaging group of Yetis.

When they escape, however, they look down at the town to find it being ranscacked by Lazarević and his men.

Answer: Tank

When Nathan and Tenzin return to provide support they'll be able to help the villagers take out their foes but, running through the town, they'll end up coming face to face with a large, almost-impervious tank. The goal here is to evade the tank's powerful blasts, fight off enemy forces, and get tot he other side of the village to use enemy explosives to finish off the heavy weaponry-- fight fire with fire. When the tank is destroyed, Elena will inform Nate that Lazarević has taken Schafer and the phurba and headed towards the temple. And so a chase begins.
Both will eventually make it to the monastery and split up when they find Schafer (who, wounded, promptly dies). The result is the same-- both will make it to the secret entrance after Chloe hands over the phurba.
Drake finds the way into Shambhala and opens the route, but Lazarević finally catches up. This time he hands over Chloe, citing her as a traitor and making Drake choose between them. Instead, Drake opens the path to Shambhala with some of the blue resin and the phurba. Inside the final door is a large cavern and at the end of that is a final puzzle.

Answer: The Tree of Life

When the group finally reaches Shambhala, Lazarević keeps Drake and the others alive to show them what they've led him to. Sure enough it's paradisaical. Soon, however, they're attacked by the local guardians, who Drake later discovers became the Yetis after eating the blue resin, fossilized amber from the Tree of Life, the basis of the Cintamani Stone. Elena is wounded by Harry Flynn who, using a grenade, takes his life. Chloe leads her out of Shambhala while Drake goes to finish off Lazarević. Lazarević, however, has consumed some of the resin and become immortal.

After a final battle in which Drake uses the resin as explosives to wound his foe, Lazarević is finally weakened enough to be taken out by the guardians. Drake, Chloe, and Elena escape back to the Tibetan village. In the end, Nathan admits that he loves Elena, leaving Chloe to walk away. Elena makes a full recovery and the two argue about how worried he must've been.

Answer: One hundred

While the first game in the series, "Drake's Fortune", never gave a total (it was sixty-one), "Among Thieves" improved upon the completionist aspect of the game not only by raising the hidden treasure number to one hundred, but by giving a running tally throughout the game. Finding all one hundred rewards the player with the Master Fortune Hunter trophy though there are many to be had in between (every five items for a while, then every ten after fifty).

These also result in money used for multiplayer add-ons (eg. skins for new characters).

The treasures range from jewelery to nic-nacs and everything in between; they're also harder to find, some needing to be shot down from precarious locations.
