Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the first page of the diary is a photo of Drake and Sully in Costa Rica. What quote is written under the image?

Answer: "Fortune favors the bold."

The first page is particularly interesting since it sums up Nathan Drake as a person and a character. In the first game, "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune", he and Sully headed to Central and South America to hunt down the treasures of El Dorado-- the page also features a Spanish coin from said journey.

The photo on the page (with the quote) was taken in Costa Rica in 2001, many years before this trip. The page on the left also bears the names Harry Flynn and Eddy Raja, the latter of whom was killed in Peru during "Drake's Fortune". A later section of the diary features 'The Faces of Victor Sullivan', each ranging from Delight to Anger, all drawn with new features (by Drake, presumably).

Not much seems to change for Sully.
2. The second page of the diary features a number of names and phone numbers of women met during Drake's travels. Whose is the only one with a picture?

Answer: Elena

The page features many women we haven't seen in the two games (which only spanned a couple of adventures but it does include several names, where the women were met, when they were met, their phone numbers, and even some emails. Some are as far apart as Pasadena, Jakarta, Istanbul, and Montreal (of course).

Many of the names also include pressed flowers. Elena's is the only one with a picture and her flower is the brightest of the bunch-- perhaps a sign? Chloe Frazer is also found amongst the names.
3. One of the diary pages features the Mongolian Oil Lamp in a postcard photo. From what museum is the picture?

Answer: Istanbul Palace Museum

Accompanying the photo is a quote from Marco Polo found within a note: "So that it should not fall into the wrong hands, I concealed my great sorrow in the unlikeliest place...the light of the great Khan shelters the fate of the Thirteen."

The journal also features Mongolian Phags Pa Script and images of the blue resin found within the oil lamp (and the ruins in Borneo). On a subsequent page is Marco Polo's alleged route from Venice to Istanbul to Trebizono to Hormuz to Ceylon to Borneo, up to Burma to Tibet and back to Hormuz.
According to another quote, Marco Polo, on his deathbed (in 1324), he said "I did not tell half of what I saw for I knew I would not be believed."
4. What, according to Drake's diary, is 'The Buddhist Holy Grail'?

Answer: The Cintamani Gem

"In the Kingdom of Shambhala lies the most precious thing to be found in all the world-- a perfect raw sapphire of the deepest blue, larger around than the reach of a man's arms."

The Cintamani Gem is the original item of interest in the game and it's what Drake and others assumed was the goal of the antagonist, Lazareviæ. Quite simply it is a really large gem from Shambhala...but it's not the only item of interest.
On the opposite page is a few pictures from "The Treasure of the World" by Nicholas Roerich; these depict a wild horse (representative of the human soul) on which the fulfilling Cintamani Jewels are carried.
5. Some of the diary entries solve puzzles. When Drake encounters the Tibetan statue within the temple, which of these does not need to be moved?

Answer: Trident

On two pages is a Tibetan statue with the hint that it may possibly have significance later on, especially in the arm arrangements. As such, when you reach the Cintamani temple in Nepal (with the large central orb meant to reflect the stone) you'll have to climb around the room to reach the different arms and shift them to match what's in the journal.

This means that three of the four arms will need to moved-- the ones with the dagger, the vegetable, and the dorte. The trident is not moved. When this is done, the giant orb will open, granting access to the phurba slot inside.
6. In the diary, players can find Drake's passports for Nepal and what other country?

Answer: Indonesia

Both the Indonesian and Nepalese passports entitle him to visit each country; he visits Borneo, the largest island in Indonesia, first to locate Lazareviæ and the temple containing the phurba. He goes to Nepal after in order to locate the temple containing the secret directions to Shambhala, somewhere in the Himalayas. The passport pages also contain Chloes contact number in Nepal-- she'll find you though.

A later page shows images from the map found in Borneo, specifically the city of spires in Nepal where Nate and the others find the correct temple
7. The diary also serves as a reminder at some points. What shape does it remind to look for when trying to use the Nepalese phurba?

Answer: Triangle

The diary says to look out for triangle shapes specifically because the phurba found in the Indonesian temple fits into such holes. There are detailed drawings enclosed and in each case it is fairly apparent what must be done-- the first such instance is in the Nepalese temple (one of the holes opens up when you reorient the statue's arms). Subsequent pages also illustrate a tree relief found on the temple walls, the phrase "Watch for light to open passages" (which is helpful beneath the temple), and an image of 'ANGRY EDDY', presumably Eddy Raja, who shouts "I kill you Drake!" Cheeky.
8. What is the name of Tenzin's daughter, a picture of whom appears in the journal?

Answer: Pema

Pema, Tenzin's daughter, is first seen in the game after the horrific train crash over the cliffs of the Himalayas. After Drake wanders out into the cold he's discovered by a local Tibetan named Tenzin who returns him to his village. Upon waking up, Drake will be tended to by a young Pema.

He later draws a sketch of her in his diary. Aside from this, the village also features in other ways. A later page shows a prayer flag from the village and another shows the important stupa standing outside the mountain cave overlooking the town; said cave leads to the temple containing Schafer's dead expedition.
9. According to Drake's 'Scare-O-Meter', which of the following is the scariest?

Answer: Demon Sasquatch

Another page irrelevant to the actual quest, Drake sketches out his sliding scale of scares throughout the game. At the bottom is Sully's Moustache, apparently scary enough to qualify for the three-item list. Above that is the Slippery Naked Guy, presumably the demonic creatures found in Peruvian bunker during "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune". Above that, at the top of the meter, is the Demon Sasquatch representing the Yetis fought in and around the temple in the Himalayas.

When Drake and Tenzin face off against these creatures they prove formidable enemies, refusing to fall to most bullets.

They reappear in greater numbers later in the game.
10. The final pages in Drake's journal are pasted in from a book called "Deutches Ahnenerbe". Where did he find this book?

Answer: On the body of a dead SS soldier

The last pages are pulled directly from the text and pictures in an old book called "Deutches Ahnenerbe", distributed by Ahnenerbe Verlag-- the SS-- and Drake finds the book amongst the bodies in the temple he visits with Tenzin in the Himalayas. These men were part of Schafer's expedition seeking the Cintamani Stone and it also features the demonic yetis. Amongst the pictures are the clues necessary for completing the final major puzzle of the game, creating the entrance to the stone proper. These include Tibetan characters, four mythical creatures, some shapes, some elements, and some colours, and when all is said and done, Drake uses the phurba to show him the way.
