Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When can you first open Drake's diary during "Drake's Deception"?

Answer: When playing as young Drake in Colombia

The first instance in which you can open Drake's new diary in "Drake's Deception" is in Chapter Two set in Cartagena, Colombia. When Nathan steps into the museum he'll have the opportunity to open the journal and later draw the all important ring and cipher into the pages.

At this point, nine pages will be filled ranging from an image of the Golden Hind to clippings from the museum program involving the Sir Francis Drake exhibit. In addition there will be a fully-sketched map of Drake's route to Borneo (a trip already visited in "Drake's Fortune"). Most importantly is the phrase 'Greatness from Small Beginnings', Drake's motto.
2. Using the diary, Drake will be able to spell out which codeword given to him by the cipher once held in the Drake exhibit?

Answer: LONGHIDDEN

A page illustrating the cipher from the Cartagena Museum can be found amongst the early drawings in Drake's journal, but he won't finish the page until twenty years later, deep underneath London, England in a Tudor-built sanctuary. When he places Drake's ring into the cipher it can be used, along with the ring's inscription, to get a secret code-- LONGHIDDEN-- which is actually an anagram for GOLDEN HIND, Sir Francis' galleon.

This, coupled with T.E. Lawrence's journal, leads Drake to believe that perhaps Drake did hide away for six months on his trip to Borneo.
3. Found amongst Katherine Marlowe's belongings in London is a pair of maps. One is for a walking tour of Palestine and Syria. Where is the other?

Answer: France

The second map is a cycling tour of France, and with the other clues found amongst the things underground in London, it leads Drake and Sully to a chateau waiting in Eastern France. The symbol found on the chateau matches with a symbol found in the Rub' al Khali desert, and by visiting both, they can get themselves closer to the treasure hidden by Drake and his fleet. Luckily, since Drake has the cipher and the ring, he's one step ahead of Marlowe.

Unfortunately, when he and Sully arrive in France they're partly intercepted by Talbott's men looking for the same rewards.
4. Several pages in the diary are from T.E. Lawrence's personal notes. When were these notes sent from Dorset, England?

Answer: On the day of his death

The T.E. Lawrence pages are found in the underground chamber in London and, to Drake's surprise, they contain a lot more useful info about the Atlantis of the Sands than one would initially think, particularly because they were suspiciously mailed from Dorset, England on the day of his fatal motorcycle accident, May 13, 1935. Lawrence, being as into archaeology as he was, allegedly found all the clues needed to find the site of the treasure in the Rub' al Khali Desert. Now it's up to Drake to piece them together, locate the hidden spot, and reap the rewards of his ancestor's secret.
5. When completing the knight puzzle in the chateau, Nate will open a secret passage. What must he do with the knights?

Answer: Swivel them around to face the proper directions

Heading through the French chateau, one of the puzzles Nate and Sully will come across involves four suits of armour, each in a corner of a large room. To finish this puzzle, Nate will look to his journal to notice their orientation and their weapons-- one has a sword, another a morning star, another an axe, and some have shields. By turning the statues to face the proper ways as indicated in the journal, he can open a passageway hidden in behind the fireplace and accidentally fall into a pit behind it. Fortunately, this will put him in the prime position to get the jump on Marlowe's men.
6. Under the alchemist lab in France, Nate and Sully will need to solve a puzzle involving animals and ancient symbols. How many of these animals appear in Nathan's diary?

Answer: Two

Under the alchemist lab operated by John Dee in the French chateau, Drake and Sully will descend underground to find an ancient passageway containing an elaborate puzzle. Here, the trick is to associate the statues on the walls with the different symbols on the ground (which change depending on your vantage point), then orienting panels on a large puzzle wall to open the pathway.

Some of the images appear in the diary-- a horse and a bird-- while others in the room have crumbled to pieces, so a bit of guess-work is necessary.

When the puzzle is complete, you can claim half of the amulet needed to find the Atlantis of the Sands.
7. While in Syria, Drake uses the journal to point him in the right direction by figuring out the location of which constellation in the night sky?

Answer: Ursa Minor

When Drake and Sully reunite with Chloe and Cutter in Syria they find their way to the top of the tallest tower in the Citadel and locate a platform engraved with a hexagram. From here, Drake's journal will indicate "as above, so below"-- he needs to find the brightest star at the end of Ursa Minor and follow it to a tower directly below.

This will start a small scavenger hunt ending with a puzzle involving three pillars; Chloe will solve this one. To get into the hidden tomb, Drake must push through "the middle way", between the pillars representing Boaz and Jachim.
8. Beneath the streets of the Yemeni Old Quarter, Drake solves a puzzle involving gears. Two gears appear to be usable based on his journal--one involving circles and the other featuring which symbol?

Answer: Cross

Under the streets of Yemen and through a cistern, Drake, Sully, and Elena will come across an ancient temple hidden away from the rest of the city. After solving a three-person puzzle, the trio will be presented with two more to gain access to a room with a star map. One of these involves collecting and turning gears, alternating between gears with crosses and gears with circles (though there are others); the other involves placing a light into a proper hole in the floor to create a shadow and finish a mural.

The latter is in a room full of statue body parts-- not creepy at all. In both cases, the journal gives helpful clues including the directions the gears turn in the former chamber.
9. The diary is not accessible any time after Drake is captured in Yemen.

Answer: False

Although the journal may not be of particular use after visiting the cistern in Yemen, it can be accessed again in the last two chapters of the game by, as usual, pressing Select. There will be no prompt or reason to open it, but from the point Drake experiences the hallucinations in Yemen to the point where he and Sully arrive in the Atlantis of the Sands, the journal is otherwise inaccessible.
10. Whose images appear in the last pages of Drake's diary?

Answer: Elena's

On the last completed page of the journal is the image of the soldier piercing a man's chest-- it's a puzzle found within the cistern in the Yemeni city. When completed, the puzzle's solution will be drawn into the picture of the room on the left hand side.
Above that, however, is two sketches of Elena, Drake's true partner. In the end of the game, they reunite and Drake dons the wedding ring he took off when they separated.
