Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Blue", "Sapphire", and "HeartGold" are all subtitles of which popular handheld series?

Answer: Pokemon

The "Pokemon" series, originally released on the Game Boy, has been known to release new versions of the game with coloured subtitles differentiating between versions. Starting with "Red" and "Blue" in North America, titles have since included "Gold", "Silver", "Sapphire", "Ruby", "Platinum", and more. "Pokemon" is a Nintendo-owned franchise in which players catch, train, and battle creatures found around the game world in order to become a Pokemon Master. "Pokemon" has since spawned a sprawling series of games, a TV show, books, and merchandise.
2. What gaming series includes "The Diabolical Box" and "The Curious Village"?

Answer: Professor Layton

Created by Japanese game developers "Level-5" for the Nintendo DS, "Professor Layton" is a popular puzzle/brain-teaser-driven mystery title which began its North American releases in 2008 with "The Curious Village". The games follow professional archaeologist Professor Layton and his young apprentice, Luke, as they solve mysteries, act gentlemanly, drink tea, and solve lateral thinking problems. Level-5 is also known for "Dark Cloud" on the PS2, "Dragon Quest IX", and "White Knight Chronicles".
3. "Exile" and "Revelations" were the third and fourth installments of what PC game series?

Answer: Myst

"Myst", developed by Rand Miller and Cyan, was at one time the best-selling game for the PC before it was overtaken by "The Sims". After several games and a tie-in novel series written by the creator, the series fell on hard times in an attempt to launch an online MMO game called "Myst: Uru".

Unfortunately, it flunked. Nonetheless, "Myst" continued through several sequels including "Riven", "Myst III: Exile", "Myst IV: Revelations", and "Myst V: End of Ages". "Myst", at one time, was the epitome of the point-and-click adventure game and was notorious for its intricate puzzles and beautifully-rendered graphics (for the time).
4. "Crisis Core" and "Dirge of Cerberus" were subtitles for sequels to which game?

Answer: Final Fantasy VII

While Square released this "Final Fantasy" masterpiece on the Playstation in 1997, it became one of the most popular games in the "Final Fantasy" canon. As a result, a PSP sequel ("Crisis Core") and a stand-alone game associated with the original ("Dirge of Cerberus") were developed by the team at Square-Enix. On top of this, a film based on the game, "Advent Children", was released in 2006.

While other games in the "Final Fantasy" series have had sequels, these are among the most popular. While "Final Fantasy X" did have a sequel, it was simply known as "X-2".
5. "World Tour" was the subtitle of the fourth game in what series?

Answer: Guitar Hero

"Guitar Hero World Tour" released in 2008 alongside "Rock Band 2" before the holiday season and as a result, the two became fierce competitors. When Harmonix "Guitar Hero" left to create "Rock Band" a few years later, their creation was released with drums.

A year later, "World Tour" released with drums to compensate. Songs included in the fourth "Guitar Hero" title included Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train", "Hotel California" by The Eagles, and Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze". While "Guitar Hero 5" was released without a subtitle, the sixth game in the series was titled "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock".
6. "Supernova" and "Universe" were subtitles for which of these selections?

Answer: Dance Dance Revolution

"Dance Dance Revolution" was first released in arcades in 1999 by Bemani, the music division of Konami. Although many of the most popular songs from the series have been high-octave J-pop and electronic remixes, many American versions of the game have included Top 40 Pop and Dance hits over the years. Appearing in arcades and on a number of consoles, it predated many music/rhythm games by several years (including "Singstar", "Guitar Hero", and "Rock Band"). "Supernova" was released in arcades and on the Playstation 2 while "Universe" showed up on the Xbox 360.
7. After the successful release of the original title in this franchise, "Extraction" was released as a Wii rail shooter. What is the series?

Answer: Dead Space

Although "Dead Space: Extraction" went against the grain of typical Wii fare, it was one of the few maturely-rated Wii games to garner any attention in 2009. A prequel to "Dead Space" released by EA Games' Visceral Games a year earlier (to rave reviews), "Extraction" was an on-rails shooter game in which the player needed to navigate the USG Ishimura to escape from evil Necromorphs.

Much like "House of the Dead: Overkill" released before it in 2009, it gained good reviews from critics but failed to make significant sales. "Gamespot" deemed it the best game no one played in 2009.
8. After the release of "Factions", this PC game series subtitled the original game in the series "Prophecies". What series is it?

Answer: Guild Wars

"Guild Wars", an NCSoft/Arenanet MMORPG, was originally released in 2005. While not pulling in the same amount of players as the Blizzard juggernaut, "World of Warcraft", "Guild Wars" maintained enough of a player base to keep going through a number of expansions and add-ons. "Prophecies" was followed by "Factions" and "Nightfall" which were all stand-alone and connected in ways while "Eye of the North" was released as a final true expansion to prepare players for the inevitable "Guild Wars 2". Unlike "World of Warcraft", all of the environments in the game are instanced including towns, dungeons (in "Eye of the North") and respective battle areas.
9. What series began with a game subtitled "Combat Evolved"?

Answer: Halo

A smash hit and one of the original Xbox's flagship titles, "Halo" became a video gaming phenomenon upon its release in 2001. "Halo: Combat Evolved" was the full title of the original game which sold millions upon millions of units. It has since become one of Microsoft's leading first-person shooter games (along with "Gears of War") and is a staple in any Xbox owner's full collection.

Other games in the series include "Halo: Reach", "Halo 3: ODST", and "Halo Wars", all set in the Master Chief's fictional, futuristic universe.

The original "Halo" was also available for PC.
10. "Shattered Memories" is one of many games in which series?

Answer: Silent Hill

Although "Silent Hill", one of Konami's most popular series, began its line-up with titles on the Playstation and Playstation 2, the library of games in the canon has spread itself onto later consoles. "Shattered Memories", for example, was the Wii iteration of the psychological horror series and the first to appear on any Nintendo system.

Many of the games in the series follow similar storylines in which a troubled individual comes across the city of Silent Hill and discovers that not all is as it seems.

Many of the games actually feature deep psychological themes; "Shattered Memories" actually makes you fill out a psychological profile before playing the game. Although earlier games in the series have received critical acclaim for said elements, some (such as "Homecoming" and "0rigins") on later consoles like the PS3 and Xbox 360 have eschewed the original hallmarks of the series for a different audience.
