Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Animals Nintendo's "Animal Crossing" released a Wii iteration in late 2008. What was this game subtitled?

Answer: City Folk

"Animal Crossing: City Folk" was the first "Animal Crossing" console release since its debut on the Gamecube six years earlier. As it turned out, reception was mixed. While many thought it piqued the interests of gamers, it brought very little in terms of new content to the series. "City Folk" was well-known for being the first to use the Wii Speak feature to chat during the game.

This innovative microphone feature is similar to those used on Xbox Live and PSN. "Animal Crossing" was one of the most popular titles on the Gamecube when it was initially released. Using its own constant clock, the game continues on with daily events even if the player doesn't load any info or play.

In the game, the player is human, but he or she interacts with the animals that live in and operate the town of Animal Crossing.

The game allows the player to interact and do tasks freely with no set, final goal. It's up to the player to determine how they want to live their lives in the game.
2. Brain Teasers What is the name of Professor Layton's loyal sidekick?

Answer: Luke

Level-5's "Professor Layton and the Curious Village" is the first in a trilogy of "Professor Layton" brain-teaser-centric games. Released in 2008, "Curious Village" won many 'Game of the Year' awards for the Nintendo DS handheld. Based around the mystery of a particularly curious village, the story follows Layton and Luke as they are trapped in the confines of the city limits (for some reason...the town has a moat). Soon, mysteries keep popping up, and the residents of St. Mystere decide to throw tons of brain teasers in the path of the main duo. Level-5 is well-known for a history of well-received games, but most of these didn't do too well in terms of sales. Examples of these include the RPGs "Dark Cloud", "Jeanne D'Arc", and "Rogue Galaxy".
3. Celebrities Many famous actors have lent their names to the video game world. Which actor is paired up with a game that they had no involvement in?

Answer: Kiefer Sutherland in "Alone in the Dark (2008)"

Patrick Stewart was known for his role in the fourth "Elder Scrolls" game as Emperor Uriel Septim VII, the monarch of Cyrodiil. In participating, he won an award from the SPIKE Video Game Awards for voice acting. "Oblivion", released on the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3, would later become one of the most profitable RPGs of 2006, even moreso than its predecessor: "Morrowind".
Samuel L. Jackson's role in "Grand Theft Auto" was that of the game's primary enemy, Officer Tenpenny. By the end of the game, Tenpenny is pretty much slated to die. "San Andreas" was also quite well-known for the Hot Coffee mods, which got the game temporarily pulled from shelves for sexual themes. The game was first released on the PS2 in 2004.
In "Fallout 3" (PC, PS3, Xbox 360), Liam Neeson played the role of the protagonist's father. Made by the same company responsible for "Elder Scrolls", "Fallout 3" was also quite popular and critically acclaimed upon its release in 2008.
Kiefer Sutherland did not provide a voice in the critically-panned "Alone in the Dark" resurrection in 2008, but he did play the role of Sergeant Roebuck in the 2008 game "Call of Duty: World at War".
4. Entertainment Which game was sold with the expansion pack, "Loopy Landscapes"?

Answer: Rollercoaster Tycoon

"Rollercoaster Tycoon", originally for the PC and Xbox, quickly became one of the top-selling PC simulation games (in a time when 'tycoon-style' games gained prominence) after its initial release in 1999. Shortly after its initial release, Hasbro released two expansions for the game, "Corkscrew Follies" and "Loopy Landscapes", and two additional sequels.
While all three other options were theme park simulation games, the only other major one may have been "SimTheme Park" for PC and PS1. Eventually, the popularity of this game resulted in one theme pack that was eventually packaged with the game itself. "SimTheme Park" was released in 1998 by Maxis (who later released "SimCoaster" in 2001).
"Thrillville", while being made by Frontier Developments, did not receive the same success as its other, similar title ("Rollercoaster Tycoon 3").
5. For Children Are "Pajama Sam" games exclusive for the PC?

Answer: No

Although the original "Pajama Sam" game, "No Need to Hide When It's Dark Outside", was released on the PC in 1996, a Wii version of the game was released twelve years later. Since its release, "Pajama Sam" has been a forerunner in kids PC titles and it has been playable on both the PC and Mac from day 1. Like many similar games such as "Freddy the Fish", "Pajama Sam" is a point-and-click adventure game which requires players to collect items found around the game's world and use them in certain situations. Created by Atari (and Majesco Entertainment on the Wii's "Don't Fear the Dark"), the game has sold many copies throughout the series.
6. General Which "Pokemon" game was one of the first in the series to be released on the DS?

Answer: Pokemon Diamond

Released in 2007, "Pokemon Diamond" and its companion piece, "Pokemon Pearl", hit the shelves with force and sold a collective fifteen million units, millions more than preceding versions. The most popular set since "Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow", "Diamond" and "Pearl" were the first with wi-fi capabilities and to be playable on the DS handheld ("Ruby" and "Sapphire" were the last on Game Boy Advance). Both raised the amount of Pokemon species to 493. After the popularity of "Diamond" and "Pearl", "Pokemon Platinum" was released to North American gamers in March 2009.

A seeming director's cut of "Diamond" and "Pearl", "Platinum" introduced one additional Pokemon to the mix as well as additional games and features not seen in the original.

After its release, it became the fastest-selling DS title of its time.
7. Geography In the "Bloodmoon" expansion of "Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind", to where are players able to travel?

Answer: Solstheim

Northwest of "Morrowind's" main province of Vvardenfell, players can find Solstheim by either swimming across the sea (time consuming process, I may say) or by hitching a ride on a boat from Khuul (which doesn't cost that much). Solstheim is home to the customizable town of Raven Rock and the under-siege Imperial stronghold of Fort Frostmouth. Home to the Nords, the island is snow-covered and forest-laden.

Many of the enemies here tend to be natives or large creatures. Unless the player has the "Bloodmoon" expansion, they can not access this island. If the player has the "Tribunal" expansion pack though, they can access the island of Almalexia and the large city of Mournhold, known for being the home of the Dark Brotherhood. Both expansions are found in the "Game of the Year Edition" of the game for Xbox and PC. Cyrodiil is the land found in the sequel, "Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion".
8. History Most people know that Nintendo began as a playing card company. What is the name of the card game they created?

Answer: Hanafuda

Hanafuda literally means 'flower cards'. In 1889, Nintendo was created, selling Hanafuda cards to the market and creating them on tree bark. The DS game "Clubhouse Games", released in 2006, included a version of the original game known as "Koi Koi".

The twelve suits of cars in the game are used to represent months of the year and the point of the game is to get more points, all of which are designated by the value of the cards taken from the field. After the 1950s, Nintendo's product line shifted from cards to toys, and in the seventies, Nintendo began building their company line around electronic gaming.

By the 1990s, their consoles had started becoming commonplace in households, and over a couple of decades of hard work, they had become the most popular home video gaming console manufacturer in the world.
9. Hobbies It's all about collecting in some games. What game, released in late 2008, forced the player to collect Light Seeds?

Answer: Prince of Persia

The "Prince of Persia" title released at this time was regarded as a regenerative boost for the series. With a new art style and gameplay, this Ubisoft title was highly anticipated and received good scores in reviews to show for it. Although the "Prince of Persia" series had found a key to success in its "Sands of Time" trilogy, this title took the Prince through new adventures alongside a mystical female sidekick, Elika. Collecting a rather extensive amount of these Light Seeds while scaling the walls of ancient ruins and battling monsters one-on-one was part of the fun this time around with many of the past elements of the series disappearing.

This game was released in December 2008 alongside a DS counterpart known as "The Fallen King".
10. Humanities Which Mario game is structured as if it were a play performed on a stage?

Answer: Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

Although the story is a virtual pop-up book on the Gamecube console, structured as a traditional turn-based role-playing game, the battles are actually set in a stage, and when certain events happen, the setting falls apart. Occasionally, between turns, you may find yourself needing to act on spur of the moment lighting drops or that odd occasion where the facade of the stage ends up tipping over onto you.

In addition, the more audience members you have watching the events, the more Star Points you can gain through appealing to the crowd or performing hard-hitting moves.

In one battle, a dragon known as Hooktail actually takes the time to eat some of the audience before the curtain call.
11. Literature Which series of books does the game "Evil Under the Sun" (PC, Wii) come from?

Answer: Agatha Christie

Agatha Christie video games first started appearing on shelves in 2005 with the adaptation of her novel "And Then There Were None". This was soon followed by "Murder on the Orient Express" and "Evil Under the Sun" (though "Murder on the Orient Express" only appeared on PC). All of the titles in this series were created by the point-and-click PC game company known as The Adventure Company, which was also known for "Safecracker", "Sam and Max: Season 1", and "Nibiru: Age of Secrets". Due to the adaptability of the Wii Remote and its association with the point-and-click genre, many of the titles owned by this company have appeared on the console. The "Nancy Drew" game series, which gained immense popularity amongst younger female players, was released by Her Interactive and has sent out over twenty "Nancy Drew" titles.
12. Movies What was the name of the expansion pack for the simulation game known as "The Movies" (PC)?

Answer: Stunts and Effects

Created by Lionhead Studios (known for its work on the Xbox/Xbox 360 titles in the "Fable" series), this simulation game was designed to allow players total creative control of a movie studio and all roles behind the scenes of filmmaking. The game actually allowed players the ability to create their own interactive movies during the course of production. Players with access to "The Movies Online" were able to upload completed videos to a listing on the game's webpage for others to watch.

The only expansion, "Stunts and Effects", simply added to the gameplay options available from the get-go. "Superstar" may have had you scratching your heads.

It was a similar-themed expansion pack for the original version of "The Sims".
13. Music Which song from Nintendo's "Pikmin" soon became a hit in Japan after its release as a single?

Answer: Ai No Uta

Created by the group, Strawberry Flower, "Ai No Uta" appeared on Japanese commercials for the original Gamecube game "Pikmin". As a result, its catchy tune was soon embedded in the minds of viewers and sales of both the game and the single rose drastically.

Although the CD ceased production shortly after, it sold more copies than the game itself. "Ai No Uta" later appeared as a playable/unlockable track for the Distant Planet stage of "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" in which Captain Olimar was a playable character.

After the release of "Pikmin 2" a few years later, Strawberry Flower had released three CDs.
14. People Ben Schultz became well known after creating which famous video game character?

Answer: Leeroy Jenkins

Ben Schultz soon became the focus of a rather monumentally famous video regarding a battle in "World of Warcraft" (PC) in which his guild attempted to complete a dungeon, but Ben, ignorantly away from his computer, missed the entire strategy and ran in early, yelling his character's name as a battle cry (hence "LEEEERROOOYYYY JENKINS!"). The resulting onslaught on his guildmates prompted one player to send the video capturing the momentous defeat to the Blizzard forums after which it became an internet hit.
Ben Schultz quickly became an internet name while Leeroy Jenkins ascended as a meme on internet forums and message boards.
Coincidentally, Leroy Jenkins is also the name of a jazz musician.
15. Religion Hiding in Peaceful Rest Valley, what religious denomination, later discovered to be a cult, is found in "Earthbound" (SNES)?

Answer: Happy Happyism

What on Earth do you do when the members of Twoson are being brainwashed and painted blue? Ness and Paula travel to Peaceful Rest Valley to find Happy Happy Village and its mysterious denizens in the first half of the game. Creepily enough, the residents of the town have an odd fascination with the colour blue.

This obsession is based on the fact that the cult leader, Carpainter, took possession of the evil Mani Mani Statue and believed that he could lead people to a better place by doing so. He resides in a mansion within the town's limits, then later battles Ness after kidnapping the other party member at this point in the game, Paula. Following the defeat of Carpainter and his eerie cult, the town of Happy Happy Village does not really need to be visited again.
16. Sci/Tech The Aperture Science Enrichment Center is found in which game?

Answer: Portal

"Portal" was originally released as part of "The Orange Box", a set of games for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 which included the first and second installments of the "Half-Life 2" series and "Team Fortress 2". The game revolves around one main character, Chell, as she navigates the testing chambers of the Aperture Science Enrichment Center with a Portal Gun in tow. Using the Portal Gun, she can make her way through traps, tests, and pitfalls designed to examine her progress.

At the end, a malevolent computer system, GLaDOS, promises the protagonist a delicious cake, but many players now know that 'the cake is a lie', and nothing more. Aperture Science may have an affiliation with Black Mesa, but not many know the actual connection between it and the other elements from the "Half-Life" series. Stand-alone, "Portal" garnered numerous awards, and despite its short play-time, it was praised by many.
17. Sports How many players are on one team of Blitzball in "Final Fantasy X"?

Answer: Six

Found in both "Final Fantasy X and X-2", this minigame was perhaps one of the most popular additions to the tenth installation in Square-Enix's popular franchise. Blitzball is played underwater by two teams of six people each. The goal, essentially, is to score goals on the opponent's team to earn points. To do this, however, you must intercept, swim with the ball, and use techniques to evade, shoot, and defend. Only one game of Blitzball must be played during the storyline of the game, but many more can be played against five other teams in the league. You start out as a member of the Besaid Aurochs. Blitzball is just one of several minigames found within the game, but it's by far one of the most memorable.
18. Television In which video game do players enter the TV after viewing the mysterious Midnight Channel?

Answer: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4

"Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4" is the fourth (obviously) in a series of "Persona" games in the long-running Atlus series "Shin Megami Tensei", which has also spread to include manga and anime series. In this iteration, players find themselves immersed in the rural lifestyle of a kid growing up in Inaba. Among going to school, interacting and maintaining relationships with friends and family, keeping a day job, and more, you'll find yourself needing to save the lives of various people by entering television screens and completing RPG sequences characteristic of the difficult Atlus games using spirits known as Personas. All the while, the game remains a difficult-to-solve mystery as your ultimate objective is to stop the Inaba murders from occurring any longer.

It's harder than it looks.
19. Video Games In an odd case of video games within games, you can earn an Ice Key by defeating a video game cartridge to open a safe in which of these games?

Answer: Banjo-Tooie

"Banjo-Tooie", originally released on the Nintendo 64, but later sold on XBLA, was the sequel to the hit Rare game, "Banjo-Kazooie", which spawned from the popularity of the character roster from "Diddy Kong Racing". In this second game, Gruntilda the witch has returned to take over Spiral Mountain and beyond, and the bumbling bear and beaky bird buddy need to band together to banish her (and the B key wears out). Of course, it's not as easy as one may think; there's a number of worlds to visit and Jigsaw Pieces (affectionately known as Jiggies) to to collect.

The "Banjo-Kazooie" game cartridge can be found in a cave on the Isle of Hags near the Jinjo Village. Once defeated, this small enemy will drop the Ice Key, an object alluded to in the original game of the series.

Inevitably, this will open a safe in Cloud Cuckooland which gives Banjo a Mega-Glowbo, and this will be used to transform Kazooie into a fire-breathing dragon.
20. World Which video game series, also the name of a major law in most of the world, has been set in Liberty City?

Answer: Grand Theft Auto

"Grand Theft Auto", originally on the PC, spread to become a hit for Sony on the Playstation 2 and 3, and later moved its fourth installment to success on the Xbox 360. Created by Rockstar Games, the series has been notorious for pushing the envelope of acceptable content in games, at one point including sexual content which later needed to be removed. Rockstar has been making controversial material for years though- "Bully", released in 2006, followed the story of a small, but dangerous private school while "Manhunt" took graphic violence to a whole new level with its visceral gameplay. Rockstar Games, owned by Take-Two Entertainment, also made games in the "Max Payne", "Earthworm Jim", and "Midnight Club" series.
