Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What country had its registry on the Andrea Doria?

Answer: Italy

The Andrea Doria was an attempt to get Italy back to prosperity after the Second World War. It was named after the 16th century admiral Andrea Doria.
2. When was the keel for the Andrea Doria laid?

Answer: February 9, 1950

The keel for the Andrea Doria was laid down at the slipways of the Ansaldo Shipyards in Genoa, Italy. The Andrea Doria would be over 600 ft. long and had over $1,000,000 in artworks adorning her passageways.
3. Did the Andrea Doria have a sister ship?

Answer: Yes

The Italian line built two ships. The first was the Andrea Doria and the other was called the Cristoforo Colombo. That ship was named after the explorer Christopher Columbus.
4. When was the Andrea Doria launched?

Answer: June 16, 1951

The Andrea Doria was launched on June 16, 1951. It was blessed by Giuseppe Siri Cardinal who was the Arch Bishop of Genoa, Italy. It was then christened by Mrs. Giusippina Saragat, who was the wife of the former minister of the Merchant Marine.
5. Did the maiden voyage go off as previously scheduled?

Answer: No

Because of some mechanical problems, builders decided to delay the maiden voyage from December 14, 1952 to one month later, in 1953. The Andrea Doria's arrival in New York, however, was delayed due to bad storms on the east coast. She was welcomed in by New York's mayor, Vincent Pellitteri.
6. With what ship did the Andrea Doria collide in Nantucket Sound?

Answer: Stockholm

On the night of July 25, 1956, the Andrea Doria was struck in the starboard side by the Stockholm. The Stockholm was an east bound ship under Swedish registry. Both ships tried to avoid each other in a very dense fog, but both captains made the wrong decision and it was too late to avoid anything.
7. How many people were killed onboard the Andrea Doria?

Answer: 46

Forty-six people were killed onboard the Andrea Doria that night. A few later died at hospitals, including a 4-year-old child with a fatal head injury. Five people were killed on the Stockholm in the crushed section of the bow. One passenger, a 14-year-old female, was later found on the bow of the Stockholm.

It is believed that she was thrown onto the ship upon impact. Most people were killed in and around the impact zone of the Stockholm.
8. What other ship came to the rescue of the Andrea Doria's passengers and crew?

Answer: Ile de France

At the time, the Isle de France was one of the largest ocean liners afloat and could help out with any rescue operation. Her captain made the decision to turn back and help once he heard the radio transmission about the accident. Isle de France would later be used in the movie "The Last Voyage", starring Robert Stack.
9. What was the main cause of the wreck as determined by the inquiries?

Answer: thick fog

The inquiries found that the thick and intermittent fog off the coast of Massachusetts contributed to the crash. However, the captain of the Andrea Doria was found guilty of speeding through the fog and the crew was found guilty of not using the charting equipment properly onboard.
10. How many people have died while trying to dive to the wreck of the Andrea Doria?

Answer: 14

As of 2006, about 14 people have died trying to dive on the wreck. Robert Ballard discovered many fishing nets and cables which could trap divers. Plus, since the condition of the wreck is severe and it's collapsing, the wreck is very hazardous to dive on.

Many people have died from decompression sickness from the pressure at those depths. One diver suffered a heart attack while preparing to go down on the wreck.
