Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is "Hungarian" in Hungarian?

Answer: Magyar

It is interesting, but some people think that the Hungarian nation isn't as 'Hungarian' as others. The truth may in fact be that the Hun tribe and the Magyar tribe arrived in Hungary at the same time, but the current 'Hun'-garians are actually no relation to the Huns (who may have died out or moved to another country in the Carpathian Basin).
2. When did the twentieth-century Hungarian Revolution occur?

Answer: October 23rd, 1956

The Hungarians did revolt during the Cold War, but in vain. On October 23rd, the Hungarians in Budapest rallied and drove the Soviet forces out of the capital. It seemed as if they'd succeeded, but they knew it was only a matter of time until the Soviet tanks took Hungary back unless they could convince the USA to send help.

They didn't, so the USSR returned with tanks to reclaim the capital through carnage and bloodshed. Many Hungarians emigrated and never returned, even after the Berlin Wall was pulled down and the USSR broken up.
3. You visit Budapest on a business trip. You are curious as to when this city became the capital of Hungary. Somehow you manage to communicate this to someone. Which of these is their answer (if they understand and are willing to answer)?

Answer: Ezer-nyolcszáz-hetvenhárom (1873)

17th November, 1873 was the date Buda and Pest were unified to create the city of Budapest, the capital of Hungary.
Out of the other two options, you may have realised that one was French and another was German.
4. In Hungary, someone offers you a 'pálinka'. What do you do with it (if you're hungry, thirsty, lonely and/or bankrupt)?

Answer: Drink it

Pálinka is an alcoholic beverage. It is not technically legal tender, and through you could eat it if it had been frozen, this may not be such a good idea. Talking to it is not exactly normal, but you could take it to a date (though it's not customary for it to be the other party on such occasions...)
5. Which of these pairs of words are NOT the same in Hungarian?

Answer: Floor and Attic

"Eye" and "piece" are "szem" (pronounced a bit like the name Sam), "tooth" and "holds" are "fog" (incidentally, the Hungarian word "hold" means "moon"), while "chin" and "stands" are "áll". "Floor" is "padló", whilst "attic" is "padlás".
6. Which of these pairs of words are not the same in Hungarian?

Answer: Wolf and eats (he is eating)

There is only one third person singular pronoun in Hungarian: ő. You cannot tell if a person is he or she if their name is Victor or Victoria and the Hungarians you meet call them Viki (Az ő neve Kovács Viki). As for the others, "half" and "fears" are "fél" and "castle" and "waits" are "vár" (a Hungarian I know said he wanted to write 'let him wait' under the sign for Buda Castle).

As for "farkas" (wolf) and "eszik" (he eats), they plainly aren't the same.
7. Which of these is not a common Hungarian slang adjective?

Answer: Szék-erős

Strong as a chair is not a simile in any language I know (but then I only know English and Hungarian). The others are: "hungry as a wolf" (farkas-éhes), "cold as ice" (jég-hideg) and "hot as fire" (tűz-forró).
8. The author of "Keménykalap és Krumpliorr", István (Stephen) Csukás is 75 in the year I write this quiz, 2011. What is the translation of his book's title?

Answer: Bowler Hat and Potato Nose

István Csukás is a well known children's author, and I don't think he ever wrote a political book. In an interview in 2011, he said that, though biologically he was turning 75, inside, in terms of energy and attitude to life, he felt around 50.
9. In Hungarian, which of these is not a day of the week?

Answer: Skócia

"Skócia" is "Scotland". "Szerda" is "Wednesday", "Szombat" is "Saturday" and "Vasárnap" is "Sunday".
10. This question deals with nationality adjectives in Hungarian. Which of these is correct?

Answer: Német is for German

"Angol" means "English" and" Indián" is only for Native American Indians, not Indian people from India.
