Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Diego told his class that he flew to Irlanda. He told the students his two favorite places were the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren. Where was Diego?

Answer: Ireland

The awesomely beautiful Cliffs of Moher are one of Ireland's most visited tourist attractions. The name burren comes from "bhoireann" meaning a stony place. Part of the Burren has been designated as one of Ireland's national parks. It has a fascinatingly strange landscape.
2. Diego went to the capital of Reino Unido. He was very excited to be there since it is home to 13 League football (soccer) teams. What world capital was Diego visiting?

Answer: London, United Kingdom

London is used in the names of eight airports, but five of them handle most of the commercial air traffic: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and London City.
3. Diego is fascinated by ancient history so he especially enjoyed visiting Stonehenge in Inglaterra. What is Inglaterra?

Answer: England

England is believed to have been settled for about 35,000 years. The name comes from the Germanic tribe, the Angles, who settled in the area in the 5th and 6th centuries. It has been suggested that Stonehenge was begun about 3000 BC.
4. Diego loves the science fiction television program Torchwood, so he was very excited to visit Cardiff. He didn't know it was the capital of Gales. What is Gales?

Answer: Wales

A major attraction in Cardiff is Cardiff Castle which has a history as a Roman fort, Norman keep, and a Victorian mansion. The first building was probably constructed around AD 55.
5. Diego arrived in Escocia just in time for the Military Tattoo. He showed the class a picture of a man wearing a kilt. Which city is the home of the Military Tattoo?

Answer: Edinburgh, Scotland

The first Edinburgh Tattoo took place in 1950. It has always been held at Edinburgh Castle. The word "tattoo" comes from "Doe den tap toe' ('Turn off the taps") which was called out in the Netherlands when it was time to close the inns in the 17th and 18th centuries. I don't quite see how that got transferred to a military display in Scotland, but that's what my research found on the official Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo website.
6. Diego and his family flew to the Paises Bajos. Diego found the capital city very interesting including the Van Gogh Museum. Where was Diego?

Answer: Amsterdam, the Netherlands

The Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, and the Rembrandt House can all be visited there. In addition to the many museums, the shopping in Amsterdam is supposed to be great.

Paises means countries and bajos means low.
7. Diego and family drove to Alemania. They traveled along the Rhine, visited many castles, famous wine areas and beer halls. Diego was especially excited to visit the BMW Museum. What is Alemania?

Answer: Germany

Many visitors are familiar with the Romantic Road, but one can also visit the Romanesque Road in Germany. It goes through 60 towns and includes 72 cathedrals, abbeys, and castles. It runs through the state of Saxony-Anhalt and Magdeburg is the major city of the area.
8. Diego headed to Suiza. One of the students loves Enchiladas Suizas. Diego was surprised to learn that this country has four official languages (German, French, Italian, and Romansh). What is the multi-lingual country?

Answer: Switzerland

Approximately 72% speak German, 21% speak French, 6% speak Italian, and ½ % (35,000) speak Romansh. Switzerland has a different name in each language as well. German - die Schweiz; French - la Suisse; Italian - Svizerra; and Romansh - la Svizra. Its Latin name is Confoederatio Helvetica, which is the basis for its ISO Country Code "CH". Helvetia is the only name that appears on the Swiss Franc coin.

Enchiladas Suizas are a Mexican dish. They are a chicken enchilada with a white cheese sauce on top. I don't know why that makes them Swiss.
9. Diego headed for Dinamarca. Dinamarca has only one country that borders it, and which lies to its south. What is Dinamarca?

Answer: Denmark

Demark is made up of one large peninsula and many islands. Everyone in Denmark lives within 52 kilometres (32 miles) of the coast. Denmark is approximately 55 degrees north (Alaska, Canada, and Russia also lie on this parallel) but the winters are not particularly cold.
10. Diego's trip ended in Suecia. Diego's favorite activity was riding the Balder at the Liseberg Amusement Park in Gothenberg. Where is it?

Answer: Sweden

World heritage sites in Sweden include: Drottningholm Palace, Viking sites Birka and Hovgarden, Engelsberg Ironworks, Bronze Age rock carvings in Tanum, Skogskyrkogarden Cemetery, Stockholm, and the Hanseatic town of Visby to name just a few. The Balder is a roller coaster, made of wood, and which is 36 metres (118 feet) high, 1070 metres (3510 feet) long and travels at up to 90 kilometres (55.9 miles) per hour.
