Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Does the word "water" refer to H2O in both languages?

Answer: Yes

It's the same word, but the Dutch pronounce the A as in wah-wah and don't mute the R.
2. Does Dutch 'reis' taste like English 'rice'?

Answer: No

The Dutch word for rice is 'rijst'. A 'reis' is a journey or a trip. But there is a similar sounding pair of words that does have the same meaning: 'rijzen' means to rise.
3. Would you call the walls of a house 'wallen' in Dutch (the plural of 'wal')?

Answer: No

Both words derive from the Latin 'vallis' or 'vallum' [a palisade], but the Dutch version has come to mean an embankment, a quay, the shore or the walls of a fortress. This word occurs in some famous street names: the plural 'De Wallen' is Amsterdam's red light district, and it has been anglicized in New York's Wall Street.
4. Is a Dutch 'knie' a leg joint?

Answer: Yes

It doesn't sound like knee, though, because the Dutch do pronounce the K.
5. What is the Dutch word for grass?

Answer: gras

'Glas' = glass, 'groen' = green, 'graat' = fishbone. By the way, the most common kind of grass in the Netherlands is English rye-grass.
6. What do you call a staircase in Dutch?

Answer: trap

'Val' = fall/trap, 'staar' = glaucoma/cataract, 'stap' = step.
7. Does 'zeven' equal seven?

Answer: Yes

It's also the plural form of the noun 'zeef' and the verb 'zeven', both meaning 'sieve' - so 'zeven zeven zeven' is a correct sentence.
8. Would you call a happy person 'glad' in Dutch?

Answer: No

That would be unflattering, unless you were complimenting a man for a clean-shaven face; 'glad' means smooth or slippery. A glad person would be 'blij'.
9. How do you translate 'life' into Dutch?

Answer: leven

'Lief' = sweet, 'vief' = lively, 'veel' = much/many.
10. Which of the following Dutch words refers to a light alchoholic beverage?

Answer: bier

'Beer' = bear, 'breed' = wide, 'brie' = a French cheese.
