Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Some states did very well for Joe Biden. What is the only state where he DID NOT win every single county?

Answer: Delaware

Biden won his home state of Delaware handily, but lost the southernmost county, Sussex, by a margin of 55 to 43. He won Delaware by racking up a large lead in Wilmington.

Biden won all four of Hawaii's counties, with an average of 64.8 percent. He won all 14 Massachusetts counties, seven of them with over 70 percent of the vote. And he won all five of Rhode Island's counties, with an average of 60 percent.
2. Joe Biden managed to win over 80 percent in 20 counties. What was his best county, with 89.7 percent of the vote?

Answer: Prince George's County, Maryland

Prince George's County topped the list. It is directly northeast of Washington DC. It is a majority minority district, with 62 percent African American population in the 2010 census. It is also home to numerous government workers and agencies, including the Census Bureau and Andrews Air Force Base.

Oglala Lakota County is second, at 88.4 percent. It is home to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, site of the Wounded Knee massacre of 1890. According to the Census Bureau, Oglala Lakota had the sad distinction of being the poorest county in all fifty states.

San Francisco came in with 85.3 percent. The city has widely been known as one of the most "liberal" places in the United States, and supports Democrats by large margins.

Clayton County is directly southwest of Atlanta and is home to Hartsfield Airport. Biden won it with 85 percent of the vote. Heavy turnout in Atlanta and surrounding counties was a key reason that Biden flipped the state of Georgia, the first time a Democrat won the state since Bill Clinton in 1992. The late Representative John Lewis represented Clayton County for many years.
3. New York City turned out huge for Biden. Which borough delivered the Democrat the most actual votes?

Answer: Brooklyn

Kings County is the most populous county in New York State, so no surprise it tops the vote list. Biden received over half a million votes and 74 percent of the vote.

He did best percentage-wise in New York County, with 84.5 percent (377k votes), with Bronx County close behind with 82.5 percent (271k votes). Biden received 412 thousand votes and 69 percent in Queens. The only borough he lost to Trump was Staten Island.
4. In which state did Biden win the most counties?

Answer: California

Biden won 36 of California's 58 counties, most by a decent margin. Biden won three with over 80 percent: San Francisco, Marin and Alameda. Eight were in the 70s and 11 were in the 60s. His closest California counties were Butte, Inyo and Stanislaus.

Georgia has 159 counties and Biden won 30 of them. North Carolina has 100 counties and Biden won 25 of them. And Biden won 24 of Colorado's 64 counties.
5. True/False: In ruby red Mississippi, Joe Biden had nine counties where he received over 70 percent of the vote.

Answer: True

Biden had two counties were he received over 80 percent: Jefferson (85.1) and Claiborne (84.8). They are among the most African-American counties in the entire United States, and are also among the poorest.

The other plus 70 counties were Holmes (79.4), Tunica (72.4), Humphreys (72.0) and Coahoma (71.0), all in the Mississippi Delta region. Noxubee (75.7) and Sunflower (70.0) counties are on the eastern side of the state and Hinds County (74.3) is home to the state capitol of Jackson.
6. College students were a major part of the coalition that helped elect Biden. Which of these Big Ten school counties had the best Democratic percentage?

Answer: Dane County (University of Wisconsin)

Madison delivered the votes, with 75.7 percent for Biden. Dane County had an amazing 35,000 vote increase in Democratic performance from 2016, and Biden's margin in Dane County was almost the same as his margin in Milwaukee County, which is several times larger.

Washtenaw, home to Ann Arbor, came in at 72.7 percent. Johnson, home of Iowa City, gave Biden 70.8 percent, and Hennepin county gave him 70.5 percent.
7. Of the 40 largest counties in the United States, Biden won 38 and Trump won 2. Both Trump counties were in what state?

Answer: New York

The only two large counties won by Trump were Suffolk (eastern Long Island) and Nassau (western Long Island). Trump won Suffolk with 55.6 percent, and narrowly carried Nassau County with 50.1 percent.

Trump won Texas, but it was not based on his performance in the largest counties. Texas actually has five in the top 40, and Trump lost all of them: Harris (Houston), Dallas, Tarrant (Fort Worth), Bexar (San Antonio) and Travis (Austin).

Trump also won Florida, but not based on its large counties. Florida has four in the top 40, and Trump lost all of them: Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Orange (Orlando).

And Biden also carried Ohio's two largest counties, Franklin (Columbus) and Cuyahoga (Cleveland) both with around 65 percent.
8. There were 34 counties where Donald Trump received over 90 percent of the vote in 2020. What state held the most "Ultra Red" counties?

Answer: Texas

Texas had fourteen 90 percent counties, with three over 95 percent: Borden, King and Roberts, all very small. The others are Armstrong, Glasscock, Hansford, Jack, Loving, Motley, Oldham, Shackelford, Sterling, Throckmorton and Wheeler.

Nebraska had six 90 percent counties: Arthur, Grant, Hayes, Keya Paha, Logan and McPherson. Oklahoma had four: Beaver, Cimarron, Dewey and Ellis.

While every county in West Virginia went for Trump, none went over 90 percent. The closest was Grant county with 88.4 percent. Eight counties did support Trump with over 80 percent.
9. Texas Democrats made a huge push to increase turnout in 2020. Of these Texas counties, which one saw the biggest increase in Democratic performance from 2016 to 2020?

Answer: Travis County (Austin)

Austin takes the honors. Biden received 71.7 percent compared to 66.3 percent for Hillary Clinton, an increase of 5.4 percent. Biden also increased his victory margin by 94,798 votes in Travis County.

Dallas was close, with a margin increase of 94,520. Clinton got 61.1 percent, and Biden increased it to 65.1 percent.

San Antonio saw a percentage jump from 54.5 to 58.3 and a margin increase of 57,922. And while Houston had the biggest jump in total number of voters, Biden only increased his percentage by 1.8, from 54.2 to 56. The margin in Houston increased by 56,052 votes.
10. Of the 50 or so counties that flipped from Donald Trump to Joe Biden in 2020, which county saw the biggest switch, with a move of over 86,000 votes?

Answer: Maricopa County, Arizona

In 2016, Trump won the Phoenix area by 41,425 votes. In 2020, Biden carried Maricopa County by 45,109, a shift of 86,500 votes. This was central to Arizona going for Biden.

Tarrant County in Texas is home to Fort Worth. While Trump won it by 57,682 votes four years ago, Biden was able to win it by a very narrow margin. This is reflective of Trump's fall-off in suburban areas all across the country.

Johnson County is the state's largest, and contains suburban Kansas City, including Overland Park and Olathe. Trump won it by 7583 in 2016, and Biden won by a margin of 26,645 in this year's election.

Kent County is where Grand Rapids, the political home of Gerald Ford, is located. Trump carried the county in 2016 by 9392; this time around, Biden won with a margin of 21,435, a swing of almost 31,000 votes.
