Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Galveston, TX to Dallas, TX

Answer: I-45

The trip from Galveston to Dallas takes about 4 hours, 38 minutes and runs for about 295 miles. The entirety of I-45 lies within the state of Texas (the second largest of all 50 US states at over 268,000 square miles). The portion of I-45 between Galveston and Houston is known to locals as the Gulf Freeway. I-45 is the shortest primary Interstate (ending with 0 or 5) and the only one that lies entirely within one state.
2. Miami, FL to New York, NY

Answer: I-95

The trip Miami to New York City is about 1,278 miles and runs about 19 hours, 30 minutes. Miami is the southern terminus of I-95, while the northern terminus lies in Maine. Like other interstates that include an odd number, I-95 runs in a generally north-south orientation.

In addition to Florida and New York, I-95 also runs through Georgia, South and North Carolina, Virginia, and several other states.
3. San Antonio, TX to Duluth, MN

Answer: I-35

The trip from San Antonio to Duluth takes about 20 hours, 20 minutes, and runs about 1,401 miles. In addition to Texas and Minnesota, I-35 also travels through Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa. I-35 is (after I-75 and I-95) the third longest north-south Interstate Highway. Some portions of I-35 near Oklahoma City, OK, predate the beginning of the Interstate Highway System.
4. Sheridan, WY to Chicago, IL

Answer: I-90

The trip from Sheridan to Chicago runs about 1,153 miles and takes about 17 hours, 52 minutes. This is just one (though large) segment of I-90 which connects Boston, MA to Seattle, WA. Though I-90 needs to dip to the south to get around the Great Lakes, the overall direction of travel for I-90 (and other Interstate Highways that include an even number) is from west to east.

Other states through which I-90 passes include Idaho, Montana, and South Dakota.
5. Albuquerque, NM to Cheyenne, WY

Answer: I-25

The trip from Albuquerque to Cheyenne runs for about 547 miles and takes about 8 hours, 20 minutes. When I had occasion to travel from my home in Maryland to Colorado Springs, CO, the last portion of my trip was on I-25. In addition to New Mexico and Wyoming, I-25 also travels through Colorado. Though I-25 only passes through three states, it passes through the capital for all three states (Albuquerque, NM, Denver, CO, and Cheyenne, WY).
6. Seattle, WA to Los Angeles, CA

Answer: I-5

The trip from Seattle to Los Angeles takes about 18 hours, 51 minutes and runs about 1,178 miles. Stretching from the Canadian border to the Mexican border, I-5 also runs through the state of Oregon. I-5 was built starting in the 1950s, but follows close to the path of US Route 99 which was built several decades earlier. Nearly 800 miles of I-5 lies in California alone.
7. Richmond, VA to St. Louis, MO

Answer: I-64

A trip between Richmond and St. Louis takes about 12 hours, 27 minutes and runs about 823 miles. I-64 also runs through the states of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia. I-64 is the second longest highway in the Interstate Highway System (after I-94) that does not end with a 5 or 0. I-64 passes through two US state capitals (Richmond and Charleston, WV).
8. Santa Monica, CA to Jacksonville, FL

Answer: I-10

The trip from Santa Monica to Jacksonville runs for about 2,433 miles and takes about 36 hours, 16 minutes. (If you are traveling this route by yourself, I hope you don't try to complete in one stretch, but stop periodically instead to rest.) While I-10 was begun in 1956, the last portion was not completed until 1990. I-10 travels across Texas for 880 miles and also crosses the states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Louisiana.
9. Louisville, KY to Cleveland, OH

Answer: I-71

The trip from Louisville to Cleveland covers the full length of I-71, running about 343 miles and running 5 hours, 22 minutes. I-71 only travels through Ohio and Kentucky. While it skirts to Indiana, it does not actually go into that state. Some of the portion of I-71 that travels through Ohio lies on a planned route that was intended to be a second Ohio Turnpike.
10. Baltimore, MD to Harrisburg, PA

Answer: I-83

Unlike some of the other routes described, the trip from Baltimore to Harrisburg (78 miles) is relatively quick at 1 hour, 14 minutes. Maryland and Pennsylvania are the only states through which I-83 passes. Both Baltimore and Harrisburg have connections with other Interstate Highways including I-95 and I-76. Since I live south of Baltimore and have a friend who lives near Harrisburg, I have traveled on I-83 several times.
