Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Interstates I-10, I-35 and I-37 run through which one of these US cities? There is also a loop interstate I-410 which runs around the city center. According to the 2010 US Census, it is the 7th most populous city in the US, and is home to the Tower of the Americas, the theme structure of the 1968 World's Fair.

Answer: San Antonio, TX

I-37, which starts in Corpus Christi, TX, and ends in San Antonio is one of only a few 2-digit interstate highways that is completely within a single state. Most others cross one or more state borders.

San Antonio also has a loop interstate, I-410.

San Antonio was named for Saint Anthony of Padua, by a 1691 Spanish expedition.
2. What US city has interstates I-70, I-25 and I-76 running through it? It is the third highest state capital in the US, at one mile [5280 ft] above sea level. Some of its nicknames include Queen City of the West, Queen City of the Plains, and Wall Street West.

Answer: Denver, CO

I-76 has two segments. One serves Colorado and Nebraska. The other starts near Akron, OH, goes through Pennsylvania, then ends in Gloucester City, NJ.

Denver was named for Kansas Territorial Governor James W. Denver, in an attempt to curry favor from him. Unbeknownst to the namer (William Larimer), Gov. Denver had already resigned from office.
3. What US city has the following interstates within it: I-66 and I-95? There are also spur highways of I-295 and I-595 (unsigned). It also has a tiny portion of I-495 (which circumscribes the city) within its city limits; most of I-495 is in two different states. It is the only non-territorial city in the US that is not officially within any state. Its original city limits were a perfect square, 10 miles by 10 miles, oriented at 45 degrees with the lines of latitude.

Answer: Washington, DC

I-66 has its left lane designated as HOV-2 (carpool with at least 2 people) from Gainesville, VA to the Capital Beltway in both directions. Inside the Beltway to the Roosevelt Bridge, the inbound is HOV-2 in the mornings and outbound is HOV-2 in the afternoons. This is further complicated in that single-passenger cars headed to/from Dulles airport are allowed on I-66 at all times.

I-95 only has about 100 yards of length technically in DC. The Wilson Bridge, near the southern corner of the District, has its ends in Virginia and Maryland. But the middle portion, which is one of only nine drawbridges in the Eisenhower Interstate System, goes over the portion of the Potomac River claimed by DC.

Washington, DC is the only city within the United States that is not *in* one of the states. The District of Columbia was originally set aside from 100 square miles of Maryland and Virginia as the capital city's location, to not be controlled by any one state. The Virginia portion was eventually ceded back to the state as Arlington County and City of Alexandria.

Washington is named after George Washington, the first elected president of the United States under the US Constitution.
4. Interstates I-5 and I-90 run through which of the following US cities? It was the setting of the popular TV show "Frasier" and is the birthplace of the alternative rock style called "Grunge".

Answer: Seattle, WA

The low-numbered odd interstate indicates it's in the far west side of the US. The high-numbered even interstate indicates it's in the far north of the US. So together, the city, Seattle, is in the far northwest US.

European settlers (Arthur A. Denny and his group of travelers, known as the Denny Party) arrived on the schooner Exact at Alki Point on November 13, 1851. The settlement was named "Seattle" in 1852, after Chief Si'ahl of the local Duwamish and Suquamish tribes.
5. Which of these US cities has the following interstates running through it: I-80, I-25, and I-180? (These three interstates are 3/4 of the interstates in the entire state.) Also, spur interstate I-180 is the only interstate highway not up to Interstate Highway standards along its entire route. It is the second-highest state capital in the US, at 6062 ft above sea level.

Answer: Cheyenne, WY

Cheyenne also has a spur highway, I-180, which is rather unusual. It is the only interstate that does not conform to Interstate Highway standards, and is not even a freeway anywhere along its route.

Cheyenne was named for the American Indian Cheyenne nation, one of the most famous and prominent Great Plains tribes.
6. Which of the following US cities has the interstates I-39, I-90, and I-94 running through it? The city and its initial streets were named after the signers of the US Constitution. It was decided that it would be the territorial capital when it was only on paper; that is, nothing of the city had actually been built, only planned.

Answer: Madison, WI

Madison is named after the 4th US president, James Madison, who died in 1836. The streets in the original city plan were named after the other 39 original signatories to the US Constitution.
7. What US city has the following interstates running through it: I-20, I-75 and I-85? It also has a loop interstate I-285 encircling the city. It is where Coca-Cola was invented in 1886.

Answer: Atlanta, GA

Atlanta is a shortened version of Atlantica-Pacifica, which was a reference to the city's beginnings as a railway hub that planned to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
8. What US city has interstates I-4 and I-75 running through it? It is in an east coast state, although its ocean view is to the west.

Answer: Tampa, FL

The word "Tampa" may mean "sticks of fire" in the language of the Calusa, a Native American tribe that once lived south of today's Tampa Bay.
9. What US city has the following interstates running through it: I-10 and I-17? On average, this city only has 69 days per year that are cloudy or rainy.

Answer: Phoenix, AZ

In Greek mythology, a phoenix is an immortal bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn from ashes after it bursts into flames.

There is no concrete evidence on who came up with the name for the new community, but stories give credit to Darrell Dupa, who suggested they name it Phoenix.
10. Through which US city do these interstates run: I-71, I-74 and I-75? It was home to the fictional radio station WKRP.

Answer: Cincinnati, OH

In 1790, Arthur St. Clair, the governor of the Northwest Territory, changed the name of the settlement to "Cincinnati" in honor of the Society of the Cincinnati, made up of Revolutionary War veterans.

Further, the Society was named after Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, a sixth and fifth century BCE Roman aristocrat and statesman whose service as consul in 460 BC and dictator in 458 BC and 439 BC made him a model of civic virtue.
